Alliteration repeats consonant sounds, and onomatopoeia uses words that imitate sounds. Assonance repeats vowel sounds in words close together in a sentence.

another. Example “ The teacher smelt
like pancakes on a Sunday morning.

3. Metaphor
• Comparison of one thing with another by
claiming one thing is another thing. Example, the
floorboards croaked like a frog.

4. Personification
• Putting a human characteristic on to a non life
object. Example The computer went to sleep like
a baby.

5. Alliteration
• Constantly repeating the same sound in a
sentence. Example, Stephen’s silly straw sucked
the sea like a tsunami.

6. Onomatopoeia
• Words that make sounds. Example, the car
screeched at the red light.

7. Assonance
• Repetition of vowel sounds. The evil elephant
elegantly egged evil Edgar.
