In the United States, American poetry has undergone cultural modernity, which was a fatal crisis between 1890 and 1910. Poets, publishers, editors, and readers had two choices to make from the developing crisis and were either to reimagine uses of poetry in a culture of nickelodeons, dime novels, and vaudeville halls. The other option was for them to watch it disappear (15). The author admits that the book had to undergo a phase of disillusionment, anxiety, and futility in order for American poetry in the United States to become modern. It is evident in the book that both elite and mass-marketed texts have their uses, particular strengths and virtues, and limitations, which are notable. Newcomb defines literary work and goes further to provide the importance of value-history under this study (16). Part one of the book looks at the Fireside poets through tracing construction of national poetic ideology. Part two concerns analysis and gave an integrative framework for part three. The book has been able to show the productive relation of American poetry to history and politics and several writings has been considered like use of realist or romantic texts (20). The author also notes the poems that excluded modernism. His work is similar to that of McGann, Richard Brodhead because they both take the same direction in understanding surrounding discourses with integral value to both function and literary texts (25). Nelson Cary’s book Anthology of Modern American Poetry contrasts this book since it only presents the canonical poetry over hundred years.

Abstract Beyond the scholarship citing the proliferation of negative media
representations of African Americans, Black males in particular, little is known
about the ways in which these men understand media and use them to make
meaning of their lives. To fill this gap, the current study analyzes qualitative
interview data from 33 African American men focused on the their expressions
and demonstrations of relationship commitment, whether they perceived ideal-
ized relationships as either models or unattainable goals and their conceptions
of how Black men are framed in the media. Findings reveal that our partici-
pants consume many mediated representations of Black men and, more impor-
tantly, they encode and decode these images to understand, describe, and
narrate their own romantic, heterosexual relationship experiences. Furthermore,
the findings from this study demonstrate the need to include Black men in
conversations about media, relationships, and their lived experiences. Implica-
tions for future study also are also discussed.

Introduction and Literature Review
Numerous studies have examined how African Americans, particularly African Amer-
ican males, have been represented and portrayed in the media (Bogle 2001; Guerrero
1993). Much of this research has concluded that African American males are often
portrayed as aggressive and involved in criminal behavior (hooks 2004). Many media
portrayals of African American males’ romantic relationships have been equally
negative, largely characterizing them as hypersexual, unfaithful, and prone to violence
(Collins 2005). Despite the fact that African Americans are significant consumers of
media and popular culture (Nielson Media Research 2012) and there exists a growing
body of literature examining African American male media portrayals and representa-
tions (Glenn and Spieldenner 2013; Oliver 2003; Page 1997), much less is known
about the ways in which African American males understand media and use them to
make meaning of their lives and romantic relationships. In an attempt to give voice to
the unique perspectives of African American men, this study employs a phenomeno-
logical approach to the analysis of in-depth, qualitative interview da.

Men and women have declared a cease-fire in the war that raged between the sexes through much of the last half of this century. In its place, they face common new enemies -- the stress, lack of time and financial pressure of modern life.
A new national survey has found that after nearly a generation of sharing the workplace and renegotiating domestic duties, most men and women agree that increased gender equity has enriched both sexes. But both also believe that the strains of this relatively new world have made building successful marriages, raising children and leading satisfying lives ever more difficult....
Surprisingly, although men and women agreed they should have equal work opportunities, and men said they approved of women working outside the home, large majorities of both said it would be better if women could instead stay home and just take care of the house and children....
Most men in the polls said they were happy to share child care and domestic chores with wives who work outside the home. Yet household duties remain sharply divided along gender lines. Working mothers still do twice as much housework as their husbands, and more than half of all women questioned expressed at least some dissatisfaction with the amount of help their husbands provide around the house....
But rather than emphasizing their differences and blaming many of life's problems on each other, men and women share a sense of conflict and confusion about how to make it all work under today's pressures. To a large extent, the politics of resentment have become the politics of fatigue....
In important ways, the survey suggests that we have yet to find new patterns of living that recognize the real workloads of two-career couples with children, and some resentment, nostalgia and fatigue are reflected in the survey results....

What is globalization, and in what ways has the Internet served as a vehicle for it?
Globalization can be defined as the way through which firms or other organizations develop international ties and begin to function on an international level as opposed to simply operating within the national level. It means that firms begin targeting even customers from other countries across the globe, hiring employees from other countries and, open branches in other countries.
The internet has been very useful in fostering globalization. Through the internet, there is easier communication among people across the globe as emails, social media and other forms of formal communication can be used. The internet has also made it easy to market as websites are used to foster international marketing through use of websites, emails and through the social media. Therefore, the internet has been a key driver towards encouraging and promoting globalization through easier communication, increased socialization and through increased marketing efforts.

The site explains that one common culture, that is the global culture, will be one culture to be used worldwide, and this is because of globalization. There is the likelihood of losing individual beliefs of every country and instead, having one broad culture that accommodates everyone. The growth in the black middle class since the Civil Rights movement has spawned an interest in the rela-
tionships between the black middle class and the black poor. Scholars are interested in understanding how social
and cultural capital among the black middle class both ameliorate and/or sustain the conditions of the black
working poor. While this literature provides us with an understanding about the role of social and cultural cap-
ital in the lives of poor and middle class blacks, it says little about how ideology functions in intra-racial, multi-
class coalitions. Through materialist and culturalist frames of community problems confronting the black working
poor, I argue that culturalist frames of community problems fail to address black working class issues. Drawing on
a case study of a community's effort to use Afrocentric ideology to improve an urban school, I demonstrate how
black middle class community members misdiagnosed the problem at the school through culturalist framing.
Findings indicate that social class plays a significant role in how problems are defined, interpreted and addressed.
In 1957, E. Franklin Frazier argued that the black middle class in America suffered from
an identity crisis. He believed that while new middle class blacks enjoyed the benefits of
higher income, education and social status, they suffered from a loss of cultural identity
brought on by assimilation into the American mainstream (Frazier 1957). Since that time,
there has been a dramatic growth in the black middle class in the United States. The growth in
income levels, educational attainment and middle class lifestyles spawned a burgeoning interest

Recently, scholars have focused their attention on understanding the relationship
between the black working poor and the black middle class (Pattillo-McCoy 1999; Wilson
1996a). Scholars are interested in understanding how social and cultural capital among the
black middle class both ameliorate and/or sustain the conditions of the black working poor
(Wilson 1996a). The prevailing argument here is that the black middle class escape the
confines of urban communities, and in their exodus, take with them valuable social and cul-
tural resources. Along with urban problems such as unemployment, the removal of black role
models and the displacement of middle class values all contribute to urban decay (Anderson
1999; Wilson 1996a, 1996b).
While this research is useful in our understanding of the role of social and cultural capital
among the black middle class and working poor, it presumes that an out-migration of the
black middle class from urban communities severs pre-existing social ties with the black work-

interviews with journalists themselves, Lewis examines how raced Black
journalists and their journalism organizations process their circumstances

face. She uncovers the social construction and attempted control of
“Blackness” in news production and its subversion by Black journalists
negotiating issues of objectivity, authority, voice, and appearance along

This article interrogates the Americanization/cultural imperialism thesis’ presump-
tions about the textual encoding of “America” by examining the semiotics and
reception of notions of America in the global hit television program, The Simpsons.
While in recent years, the cultural imperialism thesis has been both questioned and
revised from a variety of angles, often the key assumption remains that all American
cultural products are encoded with a uniform and chauvinistic attitude that pro-
motes America as a nation and culture, and that champions contemporary American
capitalist values. This article examines both the text of The Simpsons and its recep-
tion by a group of international viewers, showing how, contrary to many of its tele-
visual colleagues, one of America’s most globally successful television products
may actually be circulating a parodic-satiric suspicion of America and American
capitalist values.
Cultural imperialism was supposed to be dead. Defined by Beltran as a “process
of social influence by which a nation imposes on other countries its set beliefs,
values, knowledge and behavioral norms as well as its overall style of life”
(1978, p. 184), cultural imperialism posited a world media and cultural order in
which Western and particularly American products were killing other cultures.
Championed by academics, artists, and politicians alike, the belief in cultural
imperialism flourished in the seventies and eighties, becoming, as Sarakakis
(2005) argues, one of the few academic theories to have been directly incorpo-
rated into the world of international politics, through its corporeal existence in
the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO). Filmmaker
Wim Wenders prominently announced that “the Americans have colonized our

subconscious” (quoted in Miller, Govil, Maxwell & McMurria, 2001, p. 1);

the world via American media (see also Gans, 1985; Herman and McChesney,
1997; Mattelart, 1983); George Ritzer worried that “America will become
everyone’s ‘second culture’” (1998, p. 89), as we all become citizens of a
“McDonaldized” planet, and many culture ministers wrote similar fears into their

Abstract Beyond the scholarship citing the proliferation of negative media
representations of African Americans, Black males in particular, little is known
about the ways in which these men understand media and use them to make
meaning of their lives. To fill this gap, the current study analyzes qualitative
interview data from 33 African American men focused on the their expressions
and demonstrations of relationship commitment, whether they perceived ideal-
ized relationships as either models or unattainable goals and their conceptions
of how Black men are framed in the media. Findings reveal that our partici-
pants consume many mediated representations of Black men and, more impor-
tantly, they encode and decode these images to understand, describe, and
narrate their own romantic, heterosexual relationship experiences. Furthermore,
the findings from this study demonstrate the need to include Black men in
conversations about media, relationships, and their lived experiences. Implica-
tions for future study also are also discussed.

Introduction and Literature Review
Numerous studies have examined how African Americans, particularly African Amer-
ican males, have been represented and portrayed in the media (Bogle 2001; Guerrero
1993). Much of this research has concluded that African American males are often
portrayed as aggressive and involved in criminal behavior (hooks 2004). Many media
portrayals of African American males’ romantic relationships have been equally
negative, largely characterizing them as hypersexual, unfaithful, and prone to violence
(Collins 2005). Despite the fact that African Americans are significant consumers of
media and popular culture (Nielson Media Research 2012) and there exists a growing
body of literature examining African American male media portrayals and representa-
tions (Glenn and Spieldenner 2013; Oliver 2003; Page 1997), much less is known
about the ways in which African American males understand media and use them to
make meaning of their lives and romantic relationships. In an attempt to give voice to

Men and women have declared a cease-fire in the war that raged between the sexes through much of the last half of this century. In its place, they face common new enemies -- the stress, lack of time and financial pressure of modern life.
A new national survey has found that after nearly a generation of sharing the workplace and renegotiating domestic duties, most men and women agree that increased gender equity has enriched both sexes. But both also believe that the strains of this relatively new world have made building successful marriages, raising children and leading satisfying lives ever more difficult....
Surprisingly, although men and women agreed they should have equal work opportunities, and men said they approved of women working outside the home, large majorities of both said it would be better if women could instead stay home and just take care of the house and children....
Most men in the polls said they were happy to share child care and domestic chores with wives who work outside the home. Yet household duties remain sharply divided along gender lines. Working mothers still do twice as much housework as their husbands, and more than half of all women questioned expressed at least some dissatisfaction with the amount of help their husbands provide around the house....

What is globalization, and in what ways has the Internet served as a vehicle for it?
Globalization can be defined as the way through which firms or other organizations develop international ties and begin to function on an international level as opposed to simply operating within the national level. It means that firms begin targeting even customers from other countries across the globe, hiring employees from other countries and, open branches in other countries.
The internet has been very useful in fostering globalization. Through the internet, there is easier communication among people across the globe as emails, social media and other forms of formal communication can be used. The internet has also made it easy to market as websites are used to foster international marketing through use of websites, emails and through the social media. Therefore, the internet has been a key driver towards encouraging and promoting globalization through easier communication, increased socialization and through increased marketing efforts.
What cultural values do the site you chose reflect?
The site explains that one common culture, that is the global culture, will be one culture to be used worldwide, and this is because of globalization. There is the likelihood of losing individual beliefs of every country and instead, having one broad culture that accommodates everyone. The main challenge with this is that the cultural swift is towards the western way of thinking and of doing things and therefore, various communities are likely to lose their solidarity and the world will become one in terms of global culture. The internet, cable televisions and generally the international entertainment are nowadays geared towards supporting the western thoughts of capitalism and this is likely to create one common culture comprising mostly of western ideas. For instance, with time, English will dominate all other languages.
What political values are reflected?
There is a change in the political systems. For instance, in the past, every country used to conduct its own political affairs without concern about those of others. The main issues involved protection of human rights, caring for the economy and provision of security to the citizens. However, with the changes in ecological systems such as global warming, globalization has forced nations to be more united to act together as one through global politics. Since there are issues such as global warming, political issues and decisions of every country count towards promoting or not supporting global warming and thus the need for a single integrated global economy. The article focusses on helping the poor in the context of ethics. The author offers a criticism of the Singer’s idea of ending world poverty and discuss their areas of consensus and divergence. In the process, the author provides a detailed discussion and personal view of the issue and how people should approach it, especially regarding their income. It will be an excellent source of determining whether people have a duty to contribute their income, as well as how and why they should or should not give out their money.

This article focusses on people’s happiness, the determinants of happiness, etcetera. However, the authors are of the idea that happiness is relative and vague at times, and, as a result, people should rethink the keys to happiness. It is an important source for the paper because it is in line with the arguments made in the two primary sources.

The growth in the black middle class since the Civil Rights movement has spawned an interest in the rela-
tionships between the black middle class and the black poor. Scholars are interested in understanding how social
and cultural capital among the black middle class both ameliorate and/or sustain the conditions of the black
working poor. While this literature provides us with an understanding about the role of social and cultural cap-
ital in the lives of poor and middle class blacks, it says little about how ideology functions in intra-racial, multi-
class coalitions. Through materialist and culturalist frames of community problems confronting the black working
poor, I argue that culturalist frames of community problems fail to address black working class issues. Drawing on
a case study of a community's effort to use Afrocentric ideology to improve an urban school, I demonstrate how
black middle class community members misdiagnosed the problem at the school through culturalist framing.
Findings indicate that social class plays a significant role in how problems are defined, interpreted and addressed.
In 1957, E. Franklin Frazier argued that the black middle class in America suffered from
an identity crisis. He believed that while new middle class blacks enjoyed the benefits of
higher income, education and social status, they suffered from a loss of cultural identity
brought on by assimilation into the American mainstream (Frazier 1957). Since that time,
there has been a dramatic growth in the black middle class in the United States. The growth in
income levels, educational attainment and middle class lifestyles spawned a burgeoning interest
among researchers about the experience of the new black middle class (Landry 1987; Pattillo-
McCoy 1999).
Recently, scholars have focused their attention on understanding the relationship
between the black working poor and the black middle class (Pattillo-McCoy 1999; Wilson
1996a). Scholars are interested in understanding how social and cultural capital among the
black middle class both ameliorate and/or sustain the conditions of the black working poor
(Wilson 1996a). The prevailing argument here is that the black middle class escape the
confines of urban communities, and in their exodus, take with them valuable social and cul-
tural resources. Along with urban problems such as unemployment, the removal of black role
models and the displacement of middle class values all contribute to urban decay (Anderson
1999; Wilson 1996a, 1996b).
While this research is useful in our understanding of the role of social and cultural capital
among the black middle class and working poor, it presumes that an out-migration of the
black middle class from urban communities severs pre-existing social ties with the black work-

On Instagram, the accounts Bye Felipe and Tinder Nightmares feature screen-grabbed
messages of sexist abuse and harassment women have received from men on dating
apps. This paper presents a discursive analysis of 526 posts from these Instagrams.
Utilising a psychosocial and feminist poststructuralist perspective, it examines how
harassing messages reproduce certain gendered discourses and (hetero)sexual scripts,
and analyses how harassers attempt to position themselves and the feminine subject in
interaction. The analysis presents two themes, termed the ‘‘not hot enough’’ discourse
and the ‘‘missing discourse of consent’’, which are unpacked to reveal a patriarchal logic
in which a woman’s constructed ‘‘worth’’ in the online sexual marketplace resides in her
beauty and sexual propriety. Occurring in response to women’s exercise of choice and
to (real or imagined) sexual rejection, it is argued these are disciplinary discourses that
attempt to (re)position women and femininity as sexually subordinate to masculinity
and men. This paper makes a novel contribution to a growing body of feminist work on
online harassment and misogyny. It also considers the implications for feminist theoris-
ing on the link between postfeminism and contemporary forms of sexism, and ends with
some reflections on strategies of feminist resistance.

This book explores the written and unwritten requirements Black journalists
face in their efforts to get and keep jobs in television news. Informed by
interviews with journalists themselves, Lewis examines how raced Black
journalists and their journalism organizations process their circumstances
and choose to respond to the corporate and institutional constraints they
face. She uncovers the social construction and attempted control of
“Blackness” in news production and its subversion by Black journalists
negotiating issues of objectivity, authority, voice, and appearance along
sites of multiple differences of race, gender, and sexuality.

This article interrogates the Americanization/cultural imperialism thesis’ presump-
tions about the textual encoding of “America” by examining the semiotics and
reception of notions of America in the global hit television program, The Simpsons.
While in recent years, the cultural imperialism thesis has been both questioned and
revised from a variety of angles, often the key assumption remains that all American
cultural products are encoded with a uniform and chauvinistic attitude that pro-
motes America as a nation and culture, and that champions contemporary American
capitalist values. This article examines both the text of The Simpsons and its recep-
tion by a group of international viewers, showing how, contrary to many of its tele-
visual colleagues, one of America’s most globally successful television products
may actually be circulating a parodic-satiric suspicion of America and American
capitalist values.
Cultural imperialism was supposed to be dead. Defined by Beltran as a “process
of social influence by which a nation imposes on other countries its set beliefs,
values, knowledge and behavioral norms as well as its overall style of life”
(1978, p. 184), cultural imperialism posited a world media and cultural order in
which Western and particularly American products were killing other cultures.
Championed by academics, artists, and politicians alike, the belief in cultural
imperialism flourished in the seventies and eighties, becoming, as Sarakakis
(2005) argues, one of the few academic theories to have been directly incorpo-
rated into the world of international politics, through its corporeal existence in
the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO). Filmmaker
Wim Wenders prominently announced that “the Americans have colonized our

subconscious” (quoted in Miller, Govil, Maxwell & McMurria, 2001, p. 1);

This is done to keep us preoccupied in conflict so we ignore what is being done in front of our faces, which is politicians/media/wealthy elites are controlling the government/financial system/media to mold the public's views and what they buy. By them focusing on these secondary issues and differences, we are missing the root problem: money in politics.
