Many mainstream criminological theories focus on the individual and the reasons why he or she chooses to commit a crime or fails to possess the ability to choose not to. Developmental criminology explains criminal conduct as a relation to changes in individuals over time and their life circumstances, focusing on childhood. This perspective is less about the individual's ability to choose or not choose to commit a crime, but rather how over time, environmental factors and life events contribute to the path of delinquency and possibly a life of crime. Several developmental theories of criminology exist, each with a different focus, which suggests that there may be several pathways for a youth to become a criminal. Explain the principles of life-course theories. Week 5 case study
Adam, a 16-year-old student at the local high school, has had multiple run-ins with law enforcement, beginning with a shoplifting arrest. The store in that first arrest dropped the charges, and Adam made restitution for what he had stolen. Within the next year, it became apparent that Adam had a drug problem, as a teacher reported finding drug paraphernalia on his person and his mother revealed finding drugs around the house. Adam was then picked up for possession of a controlled substance. Adam attended outpatient treatment in lieu of being charged, where he revealed that he had been selling small amounts of drugs to some classmates. How is Criminal Mentality Created?
Every thinking person has a theory on what causes criminal behavior. What is yours? How much of your
current fortune would you be willing to stake on whether your theory is correct? Before you respond, read
Tables 5.1 and 5.2 of the textbook. Do not memorize the data; just get a feel for how humans hoping to find a
solution to stop crime try to explain behavior and the efforts spent on understanding criminals. As you
contemplate your own theory or theories on causation, add the following to your deliberation: the earliest
known tradition of classifying crime and punishment was the Code of Ur-Nammu, King of Ur around 2050
BCE. The fifth king of Babylonia in the kingdom of Mesopotamia, Hammurabi, borrowed some of King Ur’s
ideas and chiseled 282 laws and punishments in stone. For at least 4,066 years, crime and criminal activity
have been of interest to governments, yet, to date, there has been no solution to stopping crime (King, 2008).

Table 5.1 provides seven theoretical schools of thought on criminology, and except for “demonological (study
of demons)” and “ecological (geographic)” schools, the remaining five provide a basis for classifying criminal
behavior based on one or more of the theoretical schools listed in the right column (Hagan, 2017). Even those
remaining schools could lead to analytical dissection; an example would be a closer look at Karl Marx’s
school of thought that capitalism, social class inequality, and economic conditions cause crime.

Crime, over the years, has been an area of concern for people around the world. People have, therefore, put in resources to try and understand how people learn how to commit crime. One of the theories that have very large support from scholars is the social learning theory. When people are born, they have no perception of crime. Their mind is like a blank page, and anything can be written on them, and they are going to react to it. Children that have been born to parents that are violent and are involved in crime will probably pick up these traits by association, and when they are grown, there is a likely hood that they will be criminals. The other place where people pick up criminal traits is the community. The community where children are brought up could expose them to different situations. Thought this situation exposure, people react either by conforming to the ways of the community or deviating from them. If the community is based on crime then there is a high chance that people will learn how to commit crime. (Greene 2016).
Association Theory
The other theory is the differential association theory. Human beings are social creatures, and they tend to spend a lot of time with each other. The kind of people a person associates with, therefore, have an effect on how they behave. Social groups change the definition of the things that are right and those that are wrong and the people that associate them conform to these standards. (Greene 2016). Due to such conformity, people are likely to learn how to commit a crime if the social group to which they belong does not find committing crime as unacceptable behaviour. Theses social groups are known to influence behaviour both directly and indirectly. Individuals then go further and engage their own definition of the things they have learned from the social groups. An individual defines them as either desirable or undesirable depending on whether he finds them right or wrong and whether they are justified or unjustified, especially in the community they live in. The way an individual defines the issues could be based on a number of things that include the religious beliefs he has, the morals he has learned from other people. (Greene 2016).

These theories help to explain how we develop morally in our thought process. Cognitive theories also help us to understand how an individual's personality and intelligence level are linked to delinquency.
Theoretical framework : theory of cognitive development
Jean Piaget: Moral and intellectual development. People construct a mental model of the world from childhood. Thus, from birth onward an individual will continue to develop. It is a process which occurs due to biological maturation and interaction with the environment.
Bandura maintains that individuals are not born with an innate ability to act violently. He suggested that, in contrast, violence and aggression are learned through a process of behavior modeling (Bandura, 1977). In other words, children learn violence through the observation of others. Aggressive acts are modeled after three primary sources: (1) family interaction, (2) environmental experiences, and (3) the mass media.
Lawrence Kohlberg (1927–1987), who applied the concept of moral development to criminological theory. Kohlberg (1984) believed that individuals pass through stages of moral development. Most important to his theory is the notion that there are levels, stages, and social orientation. The three levels are Level I, preconventional; Level II, conventional; and Level III, postconventional. With respect to the different stages, Stages 1 and 2 fall under Level I. Stages 3 and 4 fall under Level II, and Stages 5 and 6 fall under Level III.

Other compelling factors may germinate in social learning environments. Some offenders may believe that by committing crimes there are specific outcomes and/or rewards for doing so. Some commit crimes because they are frustrated in their efforts to achieve and succeed in life. Others may commit crimes simply because of the specific difficult situation in which they find themselves. For psychologists, understanding the permutations of criminality is important, but even more so is making determinations for treatment and predictions for future criminal behavior.

Cognitive theory is one of many psychological theories of criminal behavior. Cognitive theories of crime explain criminal behavior as a defect in moral thinking, thought processes, and mental development. Cognitive theories focus on how we perceive the world around us, how we think, and the factors that influence our mental development (family upbringing, parental modeling, personality, intelligence). These theories help to explain how we develop morally in our thought process. Cognitive theories also help us to understand how an individual's personality and intelligence level are linked to delinquency.
Theoretical framework : theory of cognitive development
Jean Piaget: Moral and intellectual development. People construct a mental model of the world from childhood. Thus, from birth onward an individual will continue to develop. It is a process which occurs due to biological maturation and interaction with the environment.
Bandura maintains that individuals are not born with an innate ability to act violently. He suggested that, in contrast, violence and aggression are learned through a process of behavior modeling (Bandura, 1977). In other words, children learn violence through the observation of others. Aggressive acts are modeled after three primary sources: (1) family interaction, (2) environmental experiences, and (3) the mass media.
Lawrence Kohlberg (1927–1987), who applied the concept of moral development to criminological theory. Kohlberg (1984) believed that individuals pass through stages of moral development. Most important to his theory is the notion that there are levels, stages, and social orientation. The three levels are Level I, preconventional; Level II, conventional; and Level III, postconventional. With respect to the different stages, Stages 1 and 2 fall under Level I. Stages 3 and 4 fall under Level II, and Stages 5 and 6 fall under Level III.

Certain developmental issues like cognitive ability, intelligence, language development, and self-regulation skills have also been studies for correlation. In addition, displaying such behaviors like deceit, impulsiveness, and manipulation may hold a connection to criminal activity.
Other compelling factors may germinate in social learning environments. Some offenders may believe that by committing crimes there are specific outcomes and/or rewards for doing so. Some commit crimes because they are frustrated in their efforts to achieve and succeed in life. Others may commit crimes simply because of the specific difficult situation in which they find themselves. For psychologists, understanding the permutations of criminality is important, but even more so is making determinations for treatment and predictions for future criminal behavior.

As a health care administrator, you will likely spend a great deal of your time focused on operations. You may find yourself working in a hospital, clinic, long-term care facility, hospice, urgent care center, home health agency, or a number of other types of organizations. Regardless of the type of organization, many of the operational responsibilities are the same.
Health care financing has become quite complex. Because most health care organizations are reimbursed primarily from a third party (insurance company), health care administrators must manage the communication between the patient, the insurance company, and the organization. Consumer-directed health plans (CDHPs) have increased in popularity as a way to reduce insurance premiums; however, the patient has a larger financial responsibility for services compared to managed care plans. This concept is known as cost sharing (Niles, 2021). It is very important to understand the payer mix of your organization, so you understand where and how revenue is coming in.
Information technology is another huge area of focus right now for health care administrators. The health care industry has lagged behind other industries in the area of information technology. The U.S. health care system has seen a large increase in the number of electronic medical records implemented across health care organizations (Niles, 2021). In addition, other technologies such as telehealth, electronic data warehouses (EDWs), and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) are quickly expanding and improving the delivery of health care.

He's been in trouble a few times, but this was his first arrest. He reflected over the last few months since his dad left. He'd smoked pot, got suspended from school, stole some cigars, crashed his mom's car, and resisted arrest. They revoked his learner's permit, and the DUI charge meant he'd have to wait until he was 18 before, he'd get his license. It probably didn't matter because he'd likely be in juvie until then anyway. Why did Danny end up here? What can be done? Criminology is the study of crime with the goal of understanding its causes and developing policies for its reduction. Many mainstream criminological theories focus on the individual and the reasons why he or she chooses to commit a crime or fails to possess the ability to choose not to. Developmental criminology explains criminal conduct as a relation to changes in individuals over time and their life circumstances, focusing on childhood. This perspective is less about the individual's ability to choose or not choose to commit a crime, but rather how over time, environmental factors and life events contribute to the path of delinquency and possibly a life of crime. Several developmental theories of criminology exist, each with a different focus, which suggests that there may be several
- 2. pathways for a youth to become a criminal. Explain the principles of life-course theories. Pick two of the three developmental theories discussed in class (i.e., General Theory of Crime, Moffit’s Developmental Theory, and Sampson and Laub’s Age-Graded Theory of Social Control) and (1) describe the theory, (2) use the theories to explain Danny’s criminal behavior, and (3) apply the theories to understand what factors might cause Danny to stop engaging in criminal activity (i.e. resistance).
