WORLD WAR Z PRE
PRODUCTION
BRIEF OVERVIEW AND PLOT
World War Z is a 2013 American action horror movie. It was directed by Marc Forster,
and produced by: Brad Pitt, Dede Gardener, Jeremy Kleiner, and Ian Bryce. World War
Z premiered in London on June 2nd 2013 and released in the United States on the 21st
of June 2013.
It had an overall budget of $190 million, and the box office of $540 million, and it was
distributed by Paramount Pictures. The overall running time of the film is 116 minutes.
The overall plot of the film, is quite as simple as a family of 4 (mum, dad, and 2
daughters) being stuck in major heavy traffic in Philadelphia when the city is overrun by
zombies. As chaos spreads, the Lanes escape to Newark, New Jersey and take refuge
in an apartment, home to a couple with a young son, Tommy. UN Deputy Secutary-
general Thierry Umutoni—an old friend of Gerry's—sends a helicopter that extracts the
Lanes and Tommy to a U.S Navy vessel in the Atlantic where scientists and military
personnel are analyzing the worldwide outbreaks.
FINANCE
The overall budget for the making of the film ‘World War Z’ was $190 million. Andrew Stanton’s John
Carter bomb in March, and Universal is facing serious problems with the $175 million to $200
million Keanu Reeves samurai film 47 Ronin, which it pushed into 2013 after first-timer Carl
Rinsch presided over a chaotic shoot. Industry veterans say World War Z is another example of a film
that was greenlighted and sent into production with a concept and script that were not fully baked. The
budget originally started at $125 million, but it went over budget and ended up being $190 million. I think
in conclusion that the method they used when spending money on things before finishing planning wasn’t
the greatest idea because they might not have needed to spend that money in the first place. They could
have planned their steps fully, then organized what money they need to spend what on, and plan out
how much money they are going to be roughly spending on things, this way it would have been a more
organized community and environment.
The production company was looking to recruit 2,000 local extras for the shoot, at least 3,000 people
showed up at the casting in Glasgow on July 9th. The benefit of having 3,000 extras is that they wouldn’t
have needed to pay money to most of them, as most of them were volunteers, but they will have had to
employ people to manage that amount of people throughout the filming.
LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS SUCH AS
DEADLINES AND RECOURSES
In August 2011, Bryan Canston entered negotiations to join the film in a "small but flashy" role but had to
drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Also in August, filming was set to take place along a road on the
perimeter of the Grangemouth Refinery in Grangemouth, Scotland. The location was chosen for the length
of the road which is crucial to the shot.A few days later Paramount announced the film would be released
on December 21, 2012. They were originally looking to recruit 2,000 local extras in the areas of Glasgow,
but they had at least 3,000 turn up volunteering for the role, and they were hoping for the opportunity to
appear in a scene set in a financial district in Philadelphia. Scenes were also shot in Falmouth, Cornwall.
Also in July 2011, Game of Thrones actor Elyes Gabel was cast as a character named Fassbach.
World War Z was released June 2nd 2013, therefore it is a recent film, the release was originally meant to
be December 12th 2012 by paramount. But it was pushed back to June 21st 2012
REGULATORY REGULATIONS
Film censorship is carried out by various countries to differing degrees, films are
regulated to decide what ag he viewers should b able to watch he film and to
make sure it’s appropriate for certain audiences.
World War Z is 15 age restricted.
There are strict rules against people under the age of 15 watching this film, the
reasons for this is that they could contains Drugs, discrimination, Imitable
behaviour, Bad language, Nudity, Sex, Threats, and Violence. I 100% agree with
the bbcf, which stands for British Broad of Film classification because it sets rules
for people that are wanting to watch the film in case they are full of the
discrimination and violence that I have listed above.
PRE- PRODUCTION
Pre-production began in April 2011 with Robert Richardson announced as the cinematographer. In the
same month it was reported that filming locations would include Pinewood Studios and London,
England. In June 2011, James Badge Dale entered negotiations to join the film as an American soldier
who tries to alert authorities that the zombie threat is real. It was also reported that filming would
begin in Malta in July 2011 and would encompass Valletta and The 3 Cities. A few days later Matthew
Fox and Ed Harris entered talks while Julia Levy- Boeken was set to join the film. It was also
reported that filming would also take place in Glasgow, Scotland in August 2011. Glasgow would
double as Philadelphia, "with false shop fronts being constructed and American cars on the roads.”
Overall I think that the pre production took a lot of time, such as planning what they were going to
do, and planning out the whole thing. Thy used their time wisely which was half o he reason why the
film was such a big success. Some of the reasons why the filmed in so many different places was
because they genuinely just wanted to set a scene with different objects for some scenes of the film, for
example, all though they were filming in Glasgow at the time, they used false shops on the side of the
roads, an American cars going by.
PLANNING OF EDITING
World War Z has incredible graphics, therefore it will have cost them quite a bit
of money to get the perfect shots, and the perfect applications for the filming.
For example they might have used Photoshop to either crop scenes out or to edit
the contrast or colour of the scene. They also will have spent a lot of money on
buying applications for the editing.
