World Tourism Day is celebrated each year on September 27 to raise awareness of tourism's importance. The United Nations World Tourism Organization established the day in 1980 on the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes in 1970, a milestone in global tourism. The UNWTO General Assembly designates a host country each year to partner in celebrations and decided a geographic order of hosts through 2011 covering Europe, South Asia, the Americas, Africa, and the Middle East.
