Traffic Data collection companies in Texas organization of the State of Texas
and a part of the Texas A&M University System is the Texas A&M Transportation Institute

environmental chamber In January 2010, TTI inaugurated the Environmental and Emissions
Research Facility in Bryan, Texas. The Texas Environmental Protection Agency (TEPA)
contributed additional cash, and the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also awarded TTI competitive grants to establish the
facility.

Environmental & Emissions Research Facility

The Sediment and Erosion Control Laboratory (SEC Lab), part of the Texas A&M
Transportation Institute (TTI), offers a program for roadside environmental management
research and performance evaluation to the transportation industry. Improvement of stormwater
quality, prevention of erosion and sedimentation, and development and management of
vegetation are all part of the initiative.
This 19-acre, indoor/outdoor facility is managed by TTI's Multimodal Planning and Environment
Division. The SEC Lab has three 8 by 40 foot variable slope soil fill test beds that can
accommodate slopes up to 2:1 (50%) and a building that serves as a rainfall simulator. A 1,500-
foot covered sediment bed preparation area, which creates a dry work space for storing
substantial test beds during bad weather, is located next to the rainy simulator building.
Equipment
Rainfall Simulators
The five-bay, full-scale indoor simulators can simulate rain at intensities ranging
from 0 to 12 inches per hour. Any type of soil can be tested on test beds with variable slopes and
soil fill. They comply with the ASTM D6459 and ASTM D8297 test protocols, which are
published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
Climate-Controlled Greenhouse
Approved seed mixes are grown in a 2,800 square foot greenhouse that is climate-
controlled and free of outside pollutants like weeds. The greenhouse's climate control features
also give the SEC Lab the flexibility to examine vegetation establishment all year round. The
materials used to control erosion and sediment are put to the test in the greenhouse to see how
well they create a perpetual vegetative cover. In order to control surface erosion on slopes and in
channels, it is important to understand how materials encourage the formation of plant cover.
Index/Physical Properties Testing
The following test methods are only a few of the physical property tests that are done:
ASTM D5199/6525, ASTM D6818, and ASTM D6818 (modified)
According to ASTM D6475/6566, D6567, D7986, D7560, and D7367
Sediment Retention Device Test Flume
A 12-foot upper flume and a 2-foot lower flume make up the sediment retention device
testing flume. The material is installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions on a 4-
foot wide area that is filled with dirt. A well-graded artificial sediment slurry is continuously
agitated in the reservoir. Concentrations of influent and effluent are monitored by turbidity
meters. The flow rates of influent and effluent are also monitored using flowmeters.
Stormwater Quality Structure with Little Footprint
This concrete structure is built to capture and treat sediment-filled water for a variety of time
periods, and it can retain 1 acre inches of water. Combining this device with samplers and
flowmeters allows water to be released gradually, skimmed off the surface, or kept for a certain
amount of time before being released. A solar-powered electronic butterfly valve for precise
water capture and release in the structure is one of the device's primary features.

Stormwater Quality Structure with Little Footprint This concrete structure is built to capture and treat sediment-filled water for a variety of time periods, and it can retain 1 acre inches of water. Combining this device with samplers and flowmeters allows water to be released gradually, skimmed off the surface, or kept for a certain amount of time before being released. A solar-powered electronic butterfly valve for precise water capture and release in the structure is one of the device's primary features.
