The spinal cord has limited ability to regenerate after injury due to the formation of scar tissue and the inhibitory environment. Researchers are investigating ways to promote regeneration by targeting the inhibitory molecules in the scar and central nervous system, as well as transplanting supportive cells to bridge the injury site. Further research is still needed but progress is being made towards developing therapies to restore function after spinal cord injury.
