Media Theories Presentation
Structuralism views culture as a system of signs and believes that everything has an underlying set of rules and conventions (paradigms). Examples of paradigms in horror include isolated locations for killings and knives as personal weapons. Barthes developed theories about interpreting texts, including the enigma code where trailers leave questions, and the ball of thread theory where meanings are unravelled. Todorov's theory discusses narrative equilibrium, moments of disequilibrium, and new equilibriums. Propp identified character archetypes in narratives. Clover's final girl theory states the lone female survivor is often innocent. Postmodern films knowingly subvert expectations and combine genres in unexpected ways.
Section 2
Our film Requiem includes the female stereotype common in horror films of a woman becoming possessed and ultimately being killed by another woman. It also depicts the typical power dynamic between male detectives, with one shown as dominant through the use of high and low camera angles that look down on the subordinate detective kneeling below and up at the standing, powerful detective. The film draws on these common tropes from horror films like The Grudge and detective films through its portrayal of the possessed female victim and the unbalanced power relationship between the male detectives.

During Google’s I/O 2016 conference, presented a new set of tools for VR
They called it daydream
-Set of tools for developers
-Specific hardware (controller + headsets)

-Daydream-ready experiences

---Full of terms like Dreamscape, dreamlike, etc.
By using the term Daydream, Google seems to draw a parallelism between the experience of virtual reality and the experience of dreaming.
But this is part of a bigger phenomenon.
Dream Vision is the company responsible for Dream360, a VR device that streams content directly from your phone and that also digged the oneiric branding reference.
Kortex, a project that was recently crowdfunded on Kickstarter receiving close to $117,000 is a project that delivers a low dose alternating current shocks to the back of your skull for reducing stress and helping sleep while using VR.
Relaxation, meditation and sleep apps are one of the most popular categories in VR media.

The selection of the name “Daydream” to invoke virtual reality can be interpreted as an intentional association between VR and dream, or an example of Google’s executives instinctively drawing the comparison between the two.
Either way, it highlights the historical connection between dream and visual media, and how it’s been stressed with each new iteration of visual media facilitated through technology.
They aren’t the first drawing this analogy between moving image and subconscious.
Inception poster analysis
The poster depicts six armed characters standing together on a city street that bends upwards, questioning reality. Leonardo DiCaprio is prominently featured at the front, suggesting he plays the leader. The tagline and DiCaprio's prominent placement imply a psychological thriller focused on his character's mind. Guns and formal attire also suggest an action film involving a wealthy organized group. The director is advertised through their previous work to draw in audiences familiar with it.

The target audience is 14-19 year old males and females interested in rock music. Dark colors, images, and informal language attract this audience. Through the project, Megan learned skills using Photoshop, InDesign, and planning magazine pages.

The proposal
The group has been tasked with producing a 2 minute opening title sequence for a thriller film. Their target audience is teenagers and young adults who enjoy faster paced, imaginative, supernatural, psychological and violent themes.
Initial ideas included establishing psychological horror by portraying an underlying mental illness or personality in a character. Members contributed ideas around incorporating violence, supernatural elements, and ambiguity without dialogue to expand the audience and make the piece more complex.
Their final idea centers around a character with schizophrenia whose dreams manifest a dark personality. Scenes will show him confused in a false reality involving a glowing door and power outage, building suspense without dialogue. He will wake to normal reality, with a supernatural occurrence during. Year 12 Media Coursework Evaluation- Question 1

Identity and Subject(s) in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R Games
As the player 'walks into' a first-person shooter, does she retain her real-life identity or is the 'I' (or 'eye') that sees not so simple after all? Even as the case for the complexity of identity-formation in videogames builds up, FPS games, nevertheless, are singled out as representing a seamless first-person identification that is unique to videogames. This paper develops on earlier research to reveal major problems in such a claim: it argues that the very conception of subjectivity has always been problematised in the FPS and that the genre itself self-consciously keeps pointing this out. The recently-released FPS, S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl (called SOC, hereafter) and its second-part 'prequel' are important cases in point.
In SOC, the player enters the game after being dumped for dead and picked up by a passing body snatcher who sells him as a 'live' corpse to the local trader. He wakes up as an amnesiac and devoid of any identity save for a message on his PDA that says, 'kill the Strelok'. The gameplay, then, is the player's quest for identity. Ironically, however, one of the game endings reveals that Strelok is the player himself. Further, in the second game, the player will again find himself being asked to kill Strelok: his own 'self' in the first game. Who, then, is the 'I' in these games and who shoots whom? This paper finds a more appropriate representation of this phenomenon in the German term for FPS: 'egoshooters'. In this scenario, it is a term that can be translated both as 'I, shooter' or 'I-shooter', thus further complicating notions of player-subjectivity and identity.
To take this a step further, the very notion of 'player' is brought under scrutiny in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games. SOC derives its tale from the Russian sci-fi novel, Roadside Picnic, and Tarkovsky's film Stalker. In both these pre-texts, the lone explorer protagonist moves through the Zone, a landscape that is 'alive' and reacts to the actions of those who travel on it. The Stalker's experience in the Zone is comparable to the player's moment-to-moment survival attempt in the face of the feedback loop created between player and Zone (game) in SOC. The formation of identity is influenced by the machine code that makes up the game program. Identity is, therefore, complicated further with the realisation that the 'I' in the FPS is after all a machinic selfhood. These complex planes of subjectivity cannot be analysed by the limited critical appartus of immersion and seamless identification as used by current game theory . In this context, the Gilles Deleuze's concept of identity as a continual actualisation of potentialities emerges as a more apposite framework for understanding the complex subjectivities of the FPS shown in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games. The Deleuzian framework will also illustrate how instead of being exclusive or 'new', videogames develop on questions of identity already addressed by earlier narrative media.

Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

- 3. The 6th Day This film relates to our idea of cloning and the intro takes a more scientific approach. They use moving micro-organisms and a scrolling text with a typing sound which connotes laboratory work therefore relating to cloning. The image of the eye with dilated pupils shows a copying of identity, we could use this in our story and intro by making each clone have a different coloured eye so each one can be identified. We could use this idea in the intro by having multiple eyes revolving in a circle and then coming into one to show that each clone added together is the same person. As cloning is heavily related to DNA we could use an animation of the double helix structure in our intro, removing particular chromosomes to show each clone has a different state of mind to relate to our representation of the internal struggle of teenagers.
- 4. S Club 7: Seeing Double This is an image of the opening scene where it shows machines used for the use of cloning. This is the fictional view of what most people think of how people would be cloned. This is not how we want our film to be presented as it is quite unrealistic and would be hard to recreate.
