Presented at the California Library Association 2014 Annual Conference in Oakland, California on behalf of the California Digital Library (CDL) which is launching as a Content Hub for the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). Source of the metadata to be exposed to DPLA is from Calisphere, a portal of academic and public libraries, archives and other institutions, and from the Los Angeles and San Francisco Public Libraries.
At Utah State University, a pilot project is under development to evaluate the benefits of tracking data sets and faculty publications using the online catalog and the Library’s institutional repository.
With federal mandates to make publications and data open, universities look for solutions to track compliance. At Utah State University, the Sponsored Programs Office follows up with researchers to determine where data has been or will be deposited, per the terms of their grant.
Interested in making this publicly discoverable, the Library, Sponsored Programs, and Research Office are working together to pilot a project that enables the creation of publicly accessible MARC and Dublin Core records for data deposited by USU faculty. This project aims to make data sets, as well as publications, visible in research portals such as WorldCat, as well through Google searches.
This presentation will describe the project and anticipated benefits, as well as outline the roles of the cataloging staff and data librarian, and the involvement of the Research Office.
About the Webinar
The library and cultural institution communities have generally accepted the vision of moving to a Linked Data environment that will align and integrate their resources with those of the greater Semantic Web. But moving from vision to implementation is not easy or well-understood. A number of institutions have begun the needed infrastructure and tools development with pilot projects to provide structured data in support of discovery and navigation services for their collections and resources.
Join NISO for this webinar where speakers will highlight actual Linked Data projects within their institutions—from envisioning the model to implementation and lessons learned—and present their thoughts on how linked data benefits research, scholarly communications, and publishing.

An analysis and characterization of DMPs in NSF proposals from the University...Megan O'Donnell
Beginning in July 2011, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library, working in conjunction with the campus Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Administration (OSPRA) began an analysis of Data Management Plans (DMPs) in newly submitted National Science Foundation (NSF) grant proposals. The DMP became a required element in all NSF proposals beginning on January, 18th 2011. This analysis was undertaken to provide the Illinois campus and library with detailed information on the DMPs being submitted by Illinois researchers. In particular, the analysis allows us to categorize the grant applicant’s proposed DMP data storage venues and data reuse mechanisms, and provides us with data on the use of DMP templates developed by the University of Illinois Library.

Selection criteria for digitization – lessons learnedInstitutional context = what is your institutional mission and how can you align your digital projects with that mission (if they aren’t already?). Demonstration & alignment of digital projects & preservation is important. Institutional context will also shape how you develop your selection criteria.For example, PBS has specific needs drove my particular selection criteria & may shape how you spend your time and resources: -Outright focus on a selection of media based on a temporary assignment (this could also fit ideas like grants, etc.) -Time limit, huge collection scope and inability to playback media means less focus on physical criteria and more focus on -Broadcast & distribution environment, not a library -No rights to majority of collection - Existing deposit agreement with Library of Congress shapes institutional policy -Huge collection holding 40 years of formats and material -Multiple system migrations means lost or very limited metadata -Member stations may be unaware of what they hold due to money & staff limitationsFind org & refine data:Materials, especially A/V have huge backlogs in cataloging in academic institutions & archives. PBS members stations don’t have the staff or time to do thorough inventories (though the inventory project through CPB helped a few years back)Think about what metadata schema may work best for you – PBS does not catalog as is focused on broadcast and using a trafficing system vs. a cataloging system.

Figuring out what we have collectively will help everyone be able to focus on identifying unique items within their own collections.For PBS, I plan to make this documented collection overlap via my selection criteria public to aid both researchers and collection managers at various member stations, universities, and other organizations be able to reference content.
