This document provides an introduction to the book "The Power of Character in Leadership" by Dr. Myles Munroe. It discusses the crisis of character seen in many contemporary leaders across different fields who lack moral force. While these leaders appeared competent, they often ended up embroiled in scandals due to unethical conduct. The document then provides examples of recent leadership failures and ethical issues in government, politics, and business to illustrate this lack of strong moral character. It argues leadership is key to addressing societies' problems but the missing element is often character.
The document discusses leadership and management. It defines leadership as establishing a vision and strategy, communicating the vision, motivating action, and aligning people to realize the vision. Management is defined as planning, organizing, controlling, and problem solving to efficiently operate systems and produce consistent results. While both are important, leadership creates new systems for managers to manage and drives necessary change, while management ensures day-to-day operations. The document also discusses debates on whether leadership is innate or can be learned and developed over time.

The document provides an overview of the Boys and Girls Club, including its mission, history, leadership styles, and services. It discusses how the Boys and Girls Club was founded in 1860 to provide positive activities for boys and help improve their behavior. Over time, it expanded nationwide and began serving girls as well in 1990. The club aims to help youth become productive citizens through various programs focused on character development, education, health, arts, sports, and specialized needs. Leadership can be both innate and taught through life experiences and environmental influences, with the Boys and Girls Club helping provide structure that reduces risks like criminal behavior.

The MTL Professional Development Programme is a collection of 202 PowerPoint presentations that will provide you with step-by-step summaries of a key management or personal development skill. This presentation is on "The Making of Leaders" and will show you how people become leaders.
- The document discusses different perspectives on developing leadership and developing countries. It contrasts a "heroic" leadership style prevalent in the US of imposing dramatic change from above with an "engaging" style of enabling others and bringing people together through thoughtful discussion.
- It describes Kofi Annan's leadership of the UN as engaging in the tradition of African leadership, with long discussions and moral, courageous decision making, in contrast to corporate CEOs.
- It questions whether developing countries and leaders are really "developed" by outside experts, arguing indigenous development that respects local culture and self-determination may be better.
Working paper & presentation to 2nd Annual CAPPA Conference in Public Management, Ryerson University, Toronto, May 27-28th, 2013. This paper looks at leadership as a mechanism for social coordination - an outdated one - that is failing to generate followers due to a growing perception that leaders are either unethical or ineffective or both. In its place the author suggests another mechanism, stewardship, and outlines a process-based stewardship to use as a means to facilitate people working together when knowledge, resources and power are widely distributed. Instead of followers creating leaders, owners create stewards implying that stewardship is a more appropriate tool than leadership to facilitate network governance, collaboration and partnership and that it requires different skill sets and practices than leadership to be effective.

Leadership Attributes What Can We Expect in Our Dynamic Global Economy?Kevin Carter
This document summarizes a 2011 women's leadership conference titled "Go Where There Be Dragons" focused on leadership essentials for 2020 and beyond. The conference was presented by Sophia A. Muirhead of The Conference Board, Inc. on April 13, 2011. It discusses the need for leadership correction, calibration, and change due to increasing business complexity, globalization, and other trends. A key theme is that developing talent and addressing human capital risks should be a top priority for organizations.
This document summarizes insights from the author's leadership development journey over the past 10 years. Some key points:
1) Self-awareness and understanding one's strengths and weaknesses is vital for leadership development and growth. The author realized the importance of this through workshops and assessments.
2) Sharing power with others ("power with"), rather than wielding power over people, is an important leadership principle. This was exemplified by a businessman who worked to benefit future generations rather than seek personal credit.
3) Forming a sense of community, even in difficult circumstances, shows taking initiative and sharing responsibility, as was seen in refugee camps where informal councils developed. This speaks to empowering others rather than ho
Leadership involves serving the organization and its people, not viewing people as merely serving the leader. Effective leadership relies on qualities like integrity, honesty, and compassion rather than management skills. Leadership depends on how the leader uses management processes and inspires followers through strengths of character, not the processes themselves. Anyone can develop leadership abilities by believing strongly in a cause and approaching leadership with proper integrity.
In most businesses, governments, and other organizations there are a critical few extraordinary leaders who make a difference. What if you could increase the number of those critical few leaders, even if only by a small margin? Leadership development - your own and others - is the most high-leverage thing you can do. This is our Leadership Manifesto.
The document discusses how creating a connection culture in the workplace can boost employee engagement and productivity. It outlines that employee trust and cooperation are currently low, with only 25% of US workers engaged. Research shows connection at work enhances attention, reduces fear/worry, and increases trust, creativity and problem solving. The document proposes that organizations focus on developing core elements like human value, inspiring identity, and knowledge flow to create a more connected culture with committed members and servant leaders.
Concept Schools Turning Students Into LeadersGeorge Brymer
This document discusses turning students into leaders and the top 10 skills future leaders will need to possess. Some of the key skills discussed include: taking risks, failing and learning from mistakes, speaking multiple languages, sharing knowledge with others, and resolving conflicts. The overall message is that leadership skills can be developed in students by teaching them skills like risk-taking, learning from failures, collaboration, and resolving conflicts.
This document discusses factors that contribute to the development of leadership skills. It summarizes that leadership is complex and influenced by a variety of variables, including personal traits, drives for power, training, experience, intelligence, competence, power, circumstances, and the needs of followers. The document then examines specific leadership traits, leadership drives, the debate around whether leaders are born versus made, formative experiences that shape leaders, the importance of both experience and training, different sources of power for leaders, and factors that enable charismatic leadership.
In this article, I endeavors to develop an emerging paradigm of leadership for our organizations known as "leaderful practice." Leaderful practice constitutes a direct challenge to the conventional view of leadership as "being out in front." It is submitted that in the 21st Century organization, everyone will need to share the experience of serving as a leader, not sequentially, but concurrently and collectively. In other words, leaders co-exist at the same time and all together. In addition, each member of an organization will be encouraged to make a unique contribution to its growth, both independently and interdependently with others. In this sense, organizational members will aspire to become fervently collaborative, which in turn is derived from their compassion toward other human beings. Their well-developed sense of self permits them to develop a deep consideration of others. Thus, the article makes the case that the only possible way to lead ourselves out of trouble in management is to become mutual and to share leadership.

American International Journal of Business Management published an article analyzing how leaders develop. It discusses that:
1) Both innate traits and environmental factors contribute to leadership development, with about 30% of traits innate and 70% developed through life experiences.
2) Individuals must make a sustained personal effort to prepare, act as a leader, and reflect on their experiences. Organizations can help by identifying potential leaders and giving them opportunities to develop skills.
3) Developing as a leader is a lifelong process that requires continuous learning, self-improvement, and adapting one's leadership style to different contexts and followers. Both personal drive and organizational support facilitate leadership growth.
This document discusses effective leadership and proposes a "Circumplex model of Effective leadership". It argues that effective leadership focuses on personal growth, followers' growth, and organizational goals. The model includes four elements: achieving organizational goals, developing followers, personal leadership, and self-transcendence. The author analyzes cases of failed leadership in developing countries and proposes that transformative leadership is needed to meet people's aspirations and address leadership problems systematically rather than through quick fixes.
This is a detailed overview of the Women's Leadership Academy Women in Leadership Program. The program is designed to address gender-specific challenges. There are two areas of focus: awareness to and addressing unconscious bias, and gaining a competitive skills advantage in leadership, for example in strategy, finance, negotiations, networking, communications, and globalization.
The document outlines six paradoxes of leadership that leaders must navigate in today's complex world: globally-minded localist, high-integrity politician, humble hero, strategic executor, tech-savvy humanist, and traditioned innovator. It explains each paradox, how the elements seem contradictory yet are interrelated, and how leaders must balance both aspects to be effective. Mastering these paradoxes is critical for leaders to address urgent global challenges and create positive change.

It argues that the current focus on individual heroic leadership is inadequate and does not support inclusive, collective or community-based leadership styles. A new approach is needed that cultivates leadership as a networked, collaborative process and promotes the leadership of people of color to achieve social equity. The Leadership Learning Community aims to broaden conceptions of leadership through research and by engaging leaders across sectors.
The power-of-character-in-leadership-by-myles-munroeKayanja Deborah
This document provides an introduction to the book "The Power of Character in Leadership" by Dr. Myles Munroe. It discusses the crisis of character seen in many contemporary leaders across different fields who lack moral force. While these leaders appeared competent, they were later embroiled in scandals due to unethical conduct. The introduction argues that strong leadership with noble character is needed to address the world's problems. It then provides examples of recent leadership failures in government, business, and other areas to illustrate the prevalence of ethical issues.
This document discusses various aspects of leadership including definitions, styles, traits, qualities and values. It defines leadership as influencing others to achieve organizational goals through the interaction between leaders, followers and the situation. It describes six main leadership styles and lists some common leadership values. It also discusses entrepreneurial skills and how developing these in youth can help address unemployment issues. Overall it provides a broad overview of different elements that comprise effective leadership.
This document discusses leadership traits and provides examples of leaders who exemplified strong leadership traits. It examines the concept of leadership traits and observes traits associated with successful leaders such as honesty, competence, initiative, inspiration, hard work, intelligence, and the ability to lead people. It uses Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela as examples of leaders who displayed traits of leadership that stood the test of time, influencing today's society. The document also discusses research on physical, mental, and social traits associated with effective leadership.
The document discusses women in leadership roles. It notes that women are increasingly entering leadership positions that were traditionally dominated by men. It discusses characteristics of women's leadership styles, such as transformational leadership and promoting cooperation. It also examines barriers faced by women leaders, such as the glass ceiling and gender disparity. The document outlines some enablers to promoting women's leadership, like education and equal opportunity policies. It provides examples of prominent women leaders, such as Indra Nooyi, Arundhati Bhattacharya, Oprah Winfrey, and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.
Strategic leadership in education involves three key capabilities: thinking ahead to set a vision for transforming the education system to future needs, delivering within to manage performance and build organizational capabilities, and leading across to engage stakeholders in the transformation process. Effective strategic leaders are focused on the future, use evidence to inform decisions, can implement plans to achieve goals, open new possibilities, collaborate well with others, and act ethically. Globalization and a focus on productivity and quality are also important considerations for modern educational leadership.

The document discusses the need for a new generation of leaders in 2010 and beyond. It highlights that the old style of many politicians and CEOs is being replaced by a more transformational leadership approach. These transformational behaviors, such as thinking long-term, teamwork, and effective communication, are traditionally seen as more feminine qualities. The research found that transformational leadership is now highly valued and that women and men who prioritize integrity, vision, family and making a positive difference will thrive in the new decade. It also showed that women and older, more experienced leaders tend to have higher Leadership Intelligence scores.
This document discusses the challenges of leadership. It begins by introducing the topic and noting that leadership presents both external and internal challenges. Externally, leaders must deal with issues like criticism, crises, disasters, opposition and collaboration. Internally, common challenges include insecurity, defensiveness, lack of decisiveness, inability to be direct or objective, and impatience. The document also notes challenges that arise from the role of leadership itself, such as communicating vision, managing day-to-day operations, setting an example, maintaining effectiveness over time, and avoiding burnout. It provides strategies for overcoming challenges like being proactive, creative, and facing conflict squarely.
People’S Beliefs On How Individuals Become Leaders AffectMiles Priar
1. Early leadership theories focused on distinguishing innate qualities between leaders and followers, while more recent theories emphasize that leadership skills can be learned and developed through training and experience.
2. Great leaders are often described as having innate characteristics like charisma, confidence, intelligence and social skills. However, other theories posit that leaders are made, not born, and that leadership abilities can be developed through teaching and observation.
3. Modern theories have identified important leadership qualities like vision, communication skills, ability to motivate and inspire followers, adaptability to different situations, and learning from experiences. The most effective leadership style

The McDonald Cadet Leadership Conference is a three-day conference hosted at West Point that brings together top undergraduate student leaders from around the world. The conference focuses on developing leadership skills like critical thinking and collaboration through panel discussions on topics like the global economy, education, connectedness, and stewardship. Students are divided into small teams that work through case studies and produce op-eds. The 2015 conference had 84 student attendees from 27 US schools and 12 international schools. It featured panels moderated by US Military Academy leaders and presentations from accomplished senior fellows. The agenda included leadership tours, panels, team activities, and social events. Past attendees commented that the conference was inspirational and helped cultivate relationships that furthered their leadership development.
The document discusses various perspectives on leadership. It defines leadership as influencing others through non-coercive means. Leadership requires establishing a direction, aligning people and resources, and energizing people to accomplish results. Good leaders demonstrate integrity, competence, strong communication skills, and the ability to motivate followers. Developing emotional intelligence is also important for leadership.
The document discusses the lack of gender diversity in senior leadership roles in Canadian corporations despite 25 years of focus on advancing women. While women make up 48% of the workforce, only 36.5% of lower managers, less than 18% of top executives, less than 14% of boards, and 6% of CEOs are women. This lack of diversity represents a competitive disadvantage as research shows the most successful companies have diverse leadership that incorporates multiple perspectives. The authors argue that true change requires leadership that values diversity and holds teams accountable through transparent processes rather than just counting women or focusing on tactics. Leaders must uncover and address underlying biases to create lasting cultural change at all levels of an organization.
