Dynamic changes in motivation in collaborative citizen science projectsDana Rotman
Online citizen science projects engage volunteers in collecting, analyzing, and curating scientific data. Existing projects have demonstrated the value of using volunteers to collect data, but few projects have reached the full collaborative potential of scientists and volunteers. Understanding the shared and unique motivations of these two groups can help designers establish the technical and social infrastructures needed to promote effective partnerships. We present findings from a study of the motivational factors affecting participation in ecological citizen science projects. We show that volunteers are motivated by a complex framework of factors that dynamically change throughout their cycle of work on scientific projects; this motivational framework is strongly affected by personal interests as well as external factors such as attribution and acknowledgment. Identifying the pivotal points of motivational shift and addressing them in the design of citizen-science systems will facilitate improved collaboration between scientists and volunteers.

Maybe this hasn't happened to you personally, but each year over 20 million Americans contract a Sexually Transmitted Disease. Over 50% are youth and most go undetected and untreated. Just Health is a risk screen app being used in over 100 School-Based Health Centers and is the flagship tool of a National CDC Center for Technology Innovation that is focused on adolescent sexual health. Just Health works to improve patient-provider communication and reduce stigma around a range of topics from safety, substance use, mental health, and sexual health including the intersectionality of needs and gender identity and sexual orientation. Just Health is an example of ongoing evaluation in real-word conditions. Population-level data are improving understanding of these needs and risks from a system perspective.

Prioritization of work is hard across all levels of the organization. When we focus on feature value, often the first indicator of value is dollars versus effort expended. But what about value that is not realized through dollars? Our customers do not only think in dollars.
By expanding the definition of what value can truly mean, we can normalize, rationalize, and quantify value in new and different ways that make sense to all of our customers. We can assess value across programs as well as engage team members and stakeholders through interactive activities. In a way, it’s like relative sizing to drive values that appeal to many different consumers of your product.
Natalie first demonstrates traditional value estimation (dollars) and the resulting feature map/prioritization. Then, we look at other types of value realization through a team or program level activity using common customer sense. The activity provides participants with hands-on experience estimating and mapping feature value sans dollars on a level playing field. This gives Product Owners and teams a better baseline to align enterprise and program roadmaps with their own team or product priorities - and most importantly what the customer actually values - dollars aside!

Teams are diverse entities with different backgrounds, experiences, and opinions. This diversity leads to bias-influenced interactions among team members, whether they realize the influence or not. The behaviors and resulting decisions made because of implicit or explicit bias have their own consequences to teams and projects alike. These consequences and biases are more visible retrospectively, but how do we encourage and empower people to understand how the judgments they make wholly affect their behavioral interactions?
This session will discuss the the idea of cognitive bias, both implicit and explicit, using several examples from well known studies, smaller research observations, and individual experiences. A facilitated discussion will be conducted to discuss how the example perceptions and situations, as well as participant's own experiences, influence behaviors and interactions with others. By talking openly about bias, participants will learn approaches to dissect their rationale and motivations in order to make decisions which are less emotionally charged and more objective. Participants will leave with a self-defined plan to help interpret their judgments and realizations to continue practicing mindful bias exploration in their lives.

“You’d go in and you are the only female, I can see how a lot of
people might drop out and be deterred from that fact. It’s not like
in a college setting, where there’s three women and 28 guys, and
the professor can call on you and boost your self-esteem and say
that you’re just as smart as everyone else in the room, there isn’t
that community across states and in the country. I think it’s a little
more probably intimidating for women to look at all these people
writing these blogs and articles, and they seem super smart and

How I got started in IT and became involved in Agile. Realized there were fewer women present and of those present, fewer involved. Group to address the issue, but it lacked strategy and understanding of the underlying issues that are preventing women from being more involved.

Individual/Societal – Societal stereotypes affect what women think their priorities must be such as family. Male dominated environments such as Agile and software development can be hostile and widely held perceptions negatively can affect women’s mind-sets about themselves.
Agile/Individual – Women are looking at involvement as competing with their other priorities and are also holding themselves to very high standards for sharing their expertise.
Agile/Societal – Agile culture embraces traits that society views women as more skilled at, e.g. relationship building, collaboration, facilitation

How the interviews and the survey fed into these
Asked women in the interviews what the biggest reasons were hindering their involvement. Asked both men and women in the survey to understand the popularity of each reason for themselves and how they perceived them influencing women’s involvement specifically.
Competing priorities for time was the most popular, which is not surprising.
The three in orange had the most interesting reasoning behind them and answers were very thought provoking. I will go into more details of the three orange reasons next.
