11. DEFINITION :
Empowerment is the process of increasing the authority and
responsibility of individuals or groups to make choice and to
transform those choice into desired actions and outcomes.

Women empowerment refers to increasing the spiritual,
political, social, educational, gender or economic strength of
individual and communities of women.

18. SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT:
• Raising the status of women in society
• Women in male dominating society i.e. patriarchal form of
society do not get the same status as men especially in decision
making
• As a result, they are facing threats to their lives, health and well
being. they are overburdened with work and lack of power &
influence of man. Some studies have shown that the disease
reporting is less than women as compared to man in most part
of society.
• Social legislation has brought a changes by developing the

23. -In 2006, Prohibition of Child marriage act has raised the
marriage of girls from 15 to 18 years & for boys 18 to 21 years

25. EDUCATIONAL EMPOWERMENT :
• Women need to be educationally developed. It has been seen that
women received less formal education than men and at the same
time, women’s own knowledge, abilities and coping mechanisms
often go unrecognized.
• Lack of education has been an obstacle in the development of
women.
• Government is making the efforts to raise the educational level of
women. The central Govt. is provide financial and assistance under
the plan schemes to establish schools & colleges exclusively for
girls in backward states.

of large and small family size as well as other aspect of health.

28. ECONOMICAL EMPOWERMENT :
• Educational development and social development will bring a
change in economic condition of the women.
• Women can be empowered economically by implementing income
generating schemes such as
- Vocational courses for women
- Opening of women polytechnics
- Rehabilitation of women by providing vocational training cum
employment and residential care to old widows, deserted women

30. POLITICAL EMPOWERMENT :
• Representation in Democratic Institutions
• Women’s reservation bill, 2008, 33% reserve seat for women in the
lower house of parliament of India and all state legislative
assemblies for women.

32. NATIONAL POLICY FOR EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN:
In 2000, the GOI adopted a national policy for Women empowerment.
• National health policy 2005 for implementation and it to be reviewed
twice a year.
• The aims of the policy are :
