WOMEN CHARACTERS IN MERCHANT OF
VENICE
Are they empowered or stereotyped?
Shakespeare’s portrayal of female characters in “The Merchant of Venice”
■ Shakespeare has liberated the role of women in society playing an integral part in
shaping the anti-stereotypical world for both men and women which we live in today.
■ Shakespeare represents women as powerful characters who overpower men and defy
the expectations of their time ultimately positioning the audience to challenge their
own understanding of women and their capabilities.
Portia
■ Quick-witted, wealthy, and beautiful, Portia
embodies the virtues that are typical of
Shakespeare’s heroines
■ A free spirit who abides rigidly by rules. Rather
than ignoring the stipulations of her father’s will
■ In her courtroom appearance, she vigorously
applies the law, but still flouts convention by
appearing disguised as a man
Jessica
■ She is Shylock’s daughter.
■ Jessica abandons her father, Shylock, and her Jewish
identity in order to marry Lorenzo and convert to
Christianity.
■ She makes it clear that she is unhappy living with
Shylock, saying things like “our house is hell”
■ Lorenzo describes Jessica as “wise, fair, and true”
(II.vi.56). She reveals her intelligence and
independence when she escapes her father’s house by
disguising herself in male clothing and taking money
and other valuables with her.
Nerissa
■ Nerissa marries Gratiano.
■ She is Portia’s woman-in-waiting.
■ She provides (gives) company to her. Portia shares her
thoughts and feelings with her.She consoles her that
she would finally get a husband who would truly love
her.
■ Nerissa also accompanies Portia in the Duke’s court. In
the ring episode also, Nerissa has an equal part to play.
■ In a way, she has been created as a foil to Portia to
highlight her qualities.
empowered or stereotyped?
■ Throughout the play, ‘The Merchant ofVenice’, women are expressed as powerful
characters who behave, speak and live in a way that breaks away from the conformist
role of females during the 16th century.
■ Shakespeare builds his female roles to be confident and powerful, rather than sub-
standard to the male equivalent. Overall, this dominant portrayal of women
challenges the common Elizabethan stereotypes of gender.
‘I am a daughter to his blood; I am not to his manners’
~jessica~
■ .
You would not have parted with the ring. What man is there so much unreasonable’
(Act 4, Scene 1, 202-203)
~portia~
Conclusion
Feministic values are highly prominent in the playThe Merchant ofVenice, especially
those including the radical feminist concept of a patriarchal society. The female characters
were able to utilize the activity of cross-dressing to carry out the business they needed so
that their lives might be more bearable while under the control of men within society.
