Women and the Media
The Perfect Female Body:
Long before beauty pageants, Barbie dolls, and extra–ordinarily beautiful girls, came about the idea
of the female body. Whether you are a believer of creationalism, scientology, or evolutionism,
somehow we all came about with the perception of the "perfect" female. Women have always been
seen, and portrayed as a sex symbol, and usually the disobedient one. Dating back to B.C and the
story of Adam and Eve, Eve was the naked one who bit into the fruit that god told her was
forbidden. Why couldn't it have been Adam that caused such scandal, and was the cause for
destruction, and crime in the world, and not Eve? From the believed beginning of time, to present
day, women have really only progressed a small ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyday of their lives, people are bombarded with advertisements pushing to sell them something,
or broadcasting a new and upcoming television program. The average American sees as many as
300–500 advertisements per day. Some see as many as 1,200 a day. (Jean Kilbourne, Ed. D.)
General media is tied with public relations, and has become a source of entertainment to the public
eye. Women are usually seen as eye–candy, to attract the male heterosexual audience. Men and
woman are usually portrayed in different ways, on national television, and Hollywood films. Men
usually play the tough guy, macho man roles, while the women are predominately represented as
white, young, glamorous, heterosexual, and less influential then men. (Campbell and Carilli, 2005)
Attractive women are usually displayed in both male and female advertisements, and play a double
role. Women will think that if they purchase this product, they will resemble the model advertising
the product, and the men are tricked to think that if they purchase the product, that they will attract
women like the ones advertising the product. This is the "sex sells" propaganda tactic. Models in the
advertisements aren't supposed to look like the "average," ordinary people. To sell products,
advertisers use computer generation tools, to erase any "flaws," to appeal to a consumer. The goals
of print media are usually reached, and out to target the younger audience. According to a survey

Stereotypes In I Want To Be Miss America
Both of these excerpts come from a new title called representation, and this is accurately shown in
both excerpts. It fits into this category, because it shows how Americans think of beauty as a
representation to your mentality . We see in " I Want to be Miss America " that Americans have a
predicament in the way we see women in terms of beauty and capability . The author of this excerpt
describes the ambition of young a girl , which is adjusting to an American lifestyle , to be Miss
America . The Immigrants now understand that fitting in is an important part of the American
lifestyle , and affects our daily lives . As American we often perceive beauty , clothing style , and
appearance as an important factor of wealth , social status , and ... Show more content on

You have a leader and twenty followers . Just because you don't quite have the same exact features
as the same person next to you doesn't mean that you need to be like them or you are ugly . Younger
people feel that way today . I feel that if we didn't judge people based on beauty , and do judge them
on heart then the world would operate more smoothly . Everyone desires to fit in , because if you
don't you will not have any friends . The fifty ladies are not just judged on beauty . They are
compared on beauty , talent , and intellect . The whole world should see things this way , because it
doesn't exclude , judge , or shun people based on beauty . Another part that interest me was how the
girl was talking about how most of the girls on the stage would mostly likely become a house mom ,
and that they will not be able to receive a higher paying degree . I cannot say this about her time
period , but I feel that now women and men are equally the same . Anyone can do anything they put
their mind too . The next excerpt shows an excellent point of how the media represents different

The Purpose Of Beauty Pageants
Approximately, 2.5 million women participate in US beauty pageants each year. The pageants are
supposedly meant to act as a stage for female contestants, to promote community service and gain
scholarships are often affiliated with objectification. I clearly disagree with the whole idea and
believe that the sole purpose of beauty pageants is female exhibitionism. The trend of these started
when P.T. Barnum invited a few handfuls of women to brandish their figures. At first this was
ridiculed as scandalous but then after a few alterations the idea this preposterous event has
flourished into a business attracting businesses; acting as an economic driver.
Girls from all around the globe have once dreamt of being crowned and simply cannot avoid feeling
contentment while receiving a small compliment about looking physically attractive or beautiful.
According to the Oxford dictionary, Beauty is "a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or
form that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight". Some believe that beauty pageants were
meant as a stage to gain scholarships but this is distortion of facts as Miss America one of the most
popular pageants started in 1921 but "it was only in 1945 that Miss America even began their
scholarship". These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If pageants are meant to act as a stage to view opinions and promote community service then why
can the contestants not do so in normal daily wear clothes like jeans and T–shirts instead of bikinis?
The men folk do not have to do anything of this sort or look like real life Kens at any contest, but
instead women have to be physically attractive to gain scholarships and look like real life Barbies.
This also leads to women being labelled as ugly, fat, or dumb. At the end of the pageant, the people
who lose also start to feel insecure and think that there is something wrong with them which are not
right for their mental

Beauty Pageants : The Beauty Pageant Essay
Know The Real Beauty Pageant
"Nine out of ten girls in pageants ages 14 to 16 suffered from suicidal tendencies or depression"
(Child beauty pageant). A beauty pageant is a competition judged mainly on four events to
determine the winner: Modeling sportswear, evening wear, physical beauty, talent, and personal
interviews. Beauty pageants originally can be traced to the first Miss America Pageant, which was
held in 1921. Miss Universe and Miss USA soon followed, by the 1960's, beauty pageants were
firmly entrenched in American culture. "Beauty pageants normally start at six months to 18 years of
age. Statistics show that about 5,000 child beauty pageants are held every year and about 250,000
child contestants participate" (Child beauty pageant). Not all pageants cater to just girls, most
pageants provide scholarships, the Miss America beauty pageant has provided over 45 million
dollars in scholarships. Although opponents claim beauty pageants boost children's self esteem and
confidence, they reinforce the idea that a woman should be valued for her physical appearance, the
action pageant moms are cruel and borderline abusive, they promote an unrealistic expectation of
beauty.
Beauty pageants are more than just a competition. Although women believe that you have to have
the perfect body like celebrities, the perfect face structures, skinny body, perky lips, and the height.
In "Pageants promote self–development" it explains every child should be themselves "the purpose

A defining moment is a point at which a situation is clearly seen to start a change. Defining
moments can happen at any point in one's life. In class we read multiple of stories with different
defining moments. The two that stuck out to me were " I Want to Be Miss America" and "Here's
Herbie". In "I Want to Be Miss America", the defining moment came late for the two girls. Every
year they would watch the Miss America beauty pageant with their parents and strive and wish to
look american. "So we painstakingly rolled our long, curly hair round and round, using our heads as
giant roller, ironing it until we had long, shining hanks, like our classmates and the contestants, only
darker." (92) They just wanted to fit in and to them that meant they needed to ... Show more content

In the story "Here's Herbie" , Mike always wanted to look out the front window of the train but was
scared of what others would think of him. He didn't want to look like a little kid. "When I was
fifteen, I didn't want to seem like I was six." (156) "I wanted to look out the front of the train but I
never would, so a terrible tug of war took place in my mind." (156). It wasn't until one day, he meet
a kid on the train who didn't care what other thought of him. His name being Herbie. He walked
right onto the train, without hesitation, pulled out a steering wheel and stuck it to that front window.
He was not "driving" the train. At first being embarrassed for Herbie, he soon realized that they
weren't that much different. They both had their problems. On the train ride home, he walked into
the first car again. "My life is a total cesspool anyhow, and here I am–– life is passing me by, there
are millions of things I want to do, and I never do them. I'm just gonna do it." (159) So what he did

Argumentative Essay On Miss America
Miss America
Miss America is a yearly pageant that goes on for any girl between the age of 17 to 24. There is a lot
of people that enter this every year. Six beautiful and wonderful women have won from Oklahoma.
Their life was so amazing when they found out they have won, some of them didn't even know what
to do. There is so much stuff they have to go through to get to enter in the pageant. After they do
enter they are very busy with everything trying get to get ready for the big day. Miss America is a
pageant that has been going on since 1921. It is something that some girls look forward to for when
they are in High School or just got out of High School. The first woman ever to win from Oklahoma
was Norma Smallwood. Norma Smallwood was born on May 12, 1909 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1926
she was a sophomore in college when she entered Miss America and won at the age of 16. Norma
made more money by being a poster girl, and according to the news she made more money than
Babe Ruth in 1926, making $100,000. She got married two years after she won Miss America
(1928). About four years after she won she gave birth to her daughter named Des Cygne L'Amour
Gilcrease on June 12, 1930.
On October 30, 1947, Jane Anna Jayroe came into this world little did she know that in 1966 she
would be the titleholder to Miss Oklahoma/America. Jane grew up in Laverne, Oklahoma. They
interviewed Jane and she said "I just had a blast. I just had the most fun doing it." (newsok.com)

author presents how women are being viewed in society. While men are being judged by their

that surprised, angered, encouraged or interested you.
Reading #3: I agree with this author, because I think that women should not be judged based on
their looks, they could do things that changes the world. I find it interesting that the author was
passionate about showing women they do not have to focus on their looks, they can be something
better. They do not have to let men decide their whole lives for them. "so are women in our society
forced daily to compete for male approval, enslave by ludicrous beauty standards we ourselves are
conditioned to take seriously." (page 33). This quote made me realize that even though women have
more rights now, they are still few women in some part of the world whose lives are being approved

Want To Be Miss America Thesis
When facing a problem that seems to not have an answer right away, people turn to weapons to get
their point across, or to result in violence. Violence happens when knives, guns, and other literal
weapons are applied to the situation at hand. But, when figurative weapons are applied, like Parks's
camera, it shows true power when looked upon by others. The so called 'weapons' are made to
create a point, and tell a story of what is going on in the present, which eventually turns into
history's greatest captured moments. The battle against injustice has happened throughout history
many times, but the decisions on how we as people, or a nation, take action on the matter that
creates a message across the world. During the Civil Rights Movement, the tactic of non–violence
was used as a tool by the leaders, most used by Martin Luther King Jr. Some of the nonviolence acts
that Jr. used as tools were petitions, speeches, art, and marches. These acts were not used to create
brawls among people, but rather to create peace. The 'weapons' used crafted symbolic actions that
showed the disapproval of the group trying to diminish segregation. During ... Show more content

Helen Williams recalled that 'the first few days, the mail was incredible. We got thousands of notes

changed. Someone wrote that they were going to throw acid in her face. People sent notes:

The seeds of this new system of control, mass incarceration, were planted during the Civil Rights
Movement itself. That was a time when it became clear that the old caste system was crumbling, and
a new one would have to take its place.
In October 1982, President Ronald Reagan announced his administration's War on Drugs. Cloaked
in race–neutral language, this so–called War on Drugs offered whites opposed to racial reform a
unique opportunity to express their hostility toward blacks and black progress, without being
exposed to the charge of racism. The racist response that Vanessa Williams received and her family
faced in 1983 was clearly overt. When crack cocaine hit the streets in 1985, the media made an
effort to sensationalize the emergence of this new drug in inner–city neighborhoods. This media
sensationalism effectively made the construction of prisons the nation's main housing program for
the urban poor. By the year 2000, the Clinton Administration's 'tough on crime' policies resulted in
the largest increases in federal and state prison inmates of any president in American

I Want To Be Miss America Summary
The being of acceptance when traveling to new places and countries can cause hardships and
confusion when being somewhere new. While there are similarities and differences between
everyone whose ever been to new countries have always learned the hard way of becoming
accepted. Beyond stating the similarities and differences in the articles, "I Want to Be Miss
America", by Julia Alvarez, "Hot Dogs and Wild Geese," by Friroozeh Dumas and "Global Voices",
by Joshua St. Onge, the larger idea can be seen by reading all three texts and finding that two of the
authors, Alvarez and Dumas have similarities in the articles while Onge has a different perspective
on the way culture change has hardships. Culture change can be very pleasant and very difficult to

Alvarez wrote about her family living in New York learning to accept the cultural change. Alvarez
states that her sisters including her self where younger and would always watch the miss America

only way to be accepted. Her mother would argue with the girls and want them to stick to their own
culture they grew up with instead of learning the American way. While Alvarez wrote about moving
to a new country with family and trying to learn and figure out the new culture and to be accepted.
The second article, "Hot Dogs and Wild Geese", written by Frioozeh Dumas who moved from

Beauty Pageants: Why They Are Good for Children
Beauty Pageants: Why they are good for children Beauty Pageants have a positive impact on
children because they will boost children's self–esteem up. Ms Ng Siau Hwei, a senior psychologist
from departments of pediatrics at National University Hospital in Singapore says, "Getting involved
with dressing and make–up may be a novel experience for kids and showing their talents in front of
a crowd can boost their confidence" (Yap 1). By children being able to express their talents in front
of a group of people dressed up and have their make–up done in pageants will boost a child's self–
esteem because they are able to be themselves. Now a days one cannot be themselves without being
judged because it is not the "style", being able to express ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By doing that, the child, teenager, or adult will have experience in speaking in front of people which
will help them in the long run. Rita Panahi, writer of article Wise Up, Girls, Stupidity Is Never a
Good Look, said, "Let's be frank, beauty pageants are, funnily enough, all about beauty and nothing
else" (5). This is so wrong because beauty pageants are not just about beauty, a lot of them are
actually about question, talents, and speaking. By people saying that beauty pageants are only about
beauty, it puts a bad reputation on beauty pageants. Beauty pageants are not bad at all, they actually
help children more than school when it comes to speaking out in front of people. In school, more
than likely, they know almost more than half the people they are talking too, but in beauty pageants,
they more than likely only know the people they brought with them, so out of the hundreds of
people, they probably only know 5 people. By that being said, beauty pageants do help children
with their social skills. The last reason as to why child beauty pageants have a positive impact on
children is because they can earn scholarship money to the college of their choice. For example, a
15 year–old, Nicola Dalryimple, former winner of Trinidad and Tobago Pageant, received a $5,000
scholarship to a college of her choice ("Trinidad and Tobago" 1–2). The many people who say that
beauty pageants are nothing but beauty

'I Want To Be Miss America' By Julia Alvarez
I Want to be Miss America
The miss america pageant has been around for 76 years and there has only 1 immigrant woman to
win the pageant. ¨I Want to be Miss America¨ is about an immigrant girl and her family and how she
tries to fit in so that she can feel more like she belongs. Julia alvarez and her 3 other sisters are
learning about the USA and as a family they watch the Miss America pageant and that inspires them
and they look up the the girls and try to look like them. In ¨I Want to be Miss America¨ Julia Alvarez
shows that sometimes change doesn't benefit the person by using imagery, similes, and
characterization.
Julia Alvarez uses similes to describe the theme one examples is when julia said ¨offered one of my
legs as a guinea pig.¨(40) this quote is a simile because she is comparing herself to an experimental
guinea pig. This quote shows how they are willing to change their look and how they feel like they
need to change to be ¨american¨. Another example from Julia Alvarez is ¨our figures didn`t curve

the person being pointed out and often it's a racist or stereotyping action. "Fish Cheeks" by Amy

topic of racial and cultural stereotypes.
The essay "I want to be Miss America" is narrated by Julia Alvarez, a hispanic teenager who was
willing to change the way she looked just so that she looked more like an "American" girl. When
watching the Pageant with her sisters, Julia's thoughts were: "I knew I would never be one of those
girls ever... she was – An American– and we were not" ( Alvarez 22). They started complaining
about their height, the texture of their hair, their body, and even their style, They started making

them like "fuchsia skirts with matching vests, flowered dresses with bows at the neck" (Alvarez 13)
were described by Julia as "something someone might wear in a foreign country"(Alvarez 13).
When Julia realizes that being an American girl isn't the only definition of beauty, and sees that the
ethnic looks, that she once used to have, became more popular is when she finally realized that she
could've stayed beautiful in her own way. She felt "a gratifying sense of ... Show more content on

Cement Planter Incident
For the past week, I have spent every waking hour trying to figure out an incident that occurred in
my front yard: what had happened to a 400–pound cement flower planter, to be exact. On one
relaxing Saturday evening in late November 2015, my sister came to visit and had noted our cement
planter had been tipped over. With no account of who did this or when it had happened, I delved
into the mystery of how this massive planter had tipped over. Before I get into this story, I'd like to
point out something I never thought about before I attempted to resolve this mystery. That is, the
phenomena described as seeing an object every day, and then the object is moved or taken away and
the change is not noticed. For instance, how many times do you drive past the same scenery every

Looking at the aerial view of my house, it can be noted that a car could effectively turn around using
my driveway without having to pull up much farther than the planters. Who had pulled up far
enough into the driveway to turn around and hit the planter? As one who nurses doubt, this fallen
planter has caused uncertainty beyond belief. If it wasn't my sister or two friends, who had needed
to pull up into the driveway far enough to hit the planter when they were backing out? As much as I
want to be sure on this situation, I simply can't be.
When I had first delved into this mystery, a conclusion seemed so feasible. I would just have to talk
to the right people, ask the right questions, and the planter tipper would just become one solid
answer. Now, over a week later, I feel like shaking everyone by the shoulders, like an irritated
policeman. Who tipped this planter, and why didn't they fess up about it? I suppose some mysteries
will never be solved, and we will have to pick up our toppled flower planter and carry

The great American Dream, sought out by millions around the world, is a constant goal for people
that live in America. For every individual living in the U.S. the American Dream has a different
meaning. For some it might mean having 2 cars, a house, a picture perfect wife or husband, equally
beautiful children; preferably twins, a sustaining job and a four to five bedroom suburban home. To
others, the American Dream is having a job that can simply support a family or achieving some

in U.S school; at least one–third of children in the fourth to eight grades say they have been bullied;
according to recent studies; sometimes kids miss school to avoid bullies."This proves that those who

Character Relationships in Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas
Select four 'pairs' of characters from 'Under Milk Wood' and discuss their relationships.
In my essay I will talk about the following pairs:
Mr Pugh and Mrs Pugh,
Mrs Ogmore–Pritchard and Mr Ogmore and Mr Pritchard,
Cherry Owen and Mrs Cherry Owen &
Miss Myfanwy Price and Mr Mog Edwards.
Mr and Mrs Pugh do not have a very good relationship – they don't get on at all. Mrs Pugh is always
criticizing and nagging. She says to Mr Pugh that ''persons with manners do not read at table'', and
that ''some persons were brought up in pigsties''. Mrs Pugh is never pleased and is always
complaining at her husband. Mr Pugh tries to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are always cleaning and tidying up for her:
Mr Ogmore – ''I must put on rubber gloves and search the peke for fleas''.
Mr Pritchard – ''and dust the parlour and spray the canary''.
Mrs Ogmore–Pritchard is very controlling over her dead husbands. She is totally obsessed with
cleaning, and everything has to be tidy:
''And before you let the sun in, mind it wipes its shoes''.
She is very clean and hygienic, strict and firm. She doesn't let her dead husbands rest in peace, she
never leaves them alone – she keeps calling them back to her.
Mrs Ogmore Pritchard lives in a guesthouse, but she doesn't ever let anyone stay in case they mess
up her perfect immaculate house:
''I don't want persons in my nice clean rooms, breathing all over the chairs''.
Cherry Owen and Mrs Cherry Owen are probably the only couple that are actually happy together.
Mrs Cherry Owen is always laughing at her husband. She never minds him being drunk all the time,
and talks about the silly things he does when he comes home from the pub:
''Remember last night? In you reeled my boy, as drunk as a deacon''.
She is a very optimistic and cheerful woman. When Mr Cherry Own says that ''she's got two
husbands, one drunk, and one sober'', Mrs Cherry Owen simply replies:
''And aren't I a lucky

Controversial Topics- Beauty Pageants
Beauty Pageants: From Prim to Poisoned Her eyes glimmer with the latest layer of eyeliner. Her
cheeks, a wind–bitten pink, ache from constant smiles. She combs her hair, unaware of the damage
she is inflicting on herself. She looks around. Some wear false hair, others false teeth. Every
participant there is driven by the same potential outcome of beauty: meticulous hair, white smile,
bright eyes, and a thin figure. Everybody strives for that same superficial facade – not the average
values for a 5–year–old–girl. Since 1921 beauty pageants have been the roots of society's delusive
portrayal of beauty and until they are stopped, they will continue to cause detrimental impacts on a
female's perception of her self worth. Pageants began as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

William Pinsof, a clinical psychologist and president of the Family Institute at Northwestern
University says, "Being a little Barbie doll says your body has to be a certain way and your hair has
to be a certain way. In girls particularly, this can unleash a whole complex of destructive self–
experiences that can lead to eating disorders and all kinds of body distortions in terms of body
image" (Children). Currently, 15% of young women in America have some type of eating disorder
(Eating). Some grow up with the idea that the thinner they are, the more attractive they are. This can
lead to unfortunate interpretations of their body. In order to fulfill their perception of the ideal
figure, they dangerously push boundaries; 50% of girls 8 to 10 years old say they are unhappy with
their size, 40% of fourth graders admit to previously being on a diet, and more than 50% of girls 9
to 15 years old have exercised to lose weight (Pulling). Only to reward their behavior, the judges of
the pageants asses the contestant's physical appearance based on these superficial themes. The past
winners are no role models either. The majority of Miss America winners have been
'undernourished' on the BMI scale, or Body Mass Index, a relation of someones height to their
weight. Beauty role models are setting a poor example of how they should be taking care of
themselves: Miss America 2008 is a recovering anorexic (Huey). As

Miss America Protest Research Paper
We chose the topic of The Miss America Protest because we wanted to do something that has to do
with feminism. We were first thinking about doing something with Amelia Earhart or Rosa Parks,
but then our history teacher told us about the Miss America Protest in 1968. We started off research
the protest of 1968 and we started to really get into the idea. We got excited to work on this and
have enjoyed it since. We liked that this topic showed how feminism was evolving and how the
pageant has changed since the protest.
During the researching process we contacted three major people who were involved in the protest,
Mrs. Carol Hanisch who was one of the organizers of the protest, Mrs. Terry Meeuwsen who was an
anti–protester, and most importantly, Mrs. Judith Ford Nash who was the Miss America Winner in
1968. We had a facetime call with Mrs. Ford who told us all about how she found out about the
protest and how she reacted to it. Mrs. Hanisch told us all about why the Women's Liberation
Movement chose 1968 to do the protest and all about her experience throughout the protest. And
lastly Mrs. Meeuwsen told us about her experience anti–picketing the pageant and defending the
pageant. She ended up going back to Atlantic City and winning the Miss America Pageant. We also

Miss America Organization: Empowering Young Women
Getting caught up in the extravaganza of bikinis, singing and sashaying, can be easy. One may never
forget when Steve Harvey awarded Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez with the crown instead of the
rightful champion Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach during the Miss Universe Competition in 2015. A
whole lot more goes into beauty pageants than what meets the eye. Several systems take place in the
pageant world that empower women. The Miss America Organization has the most driven,
intelligent, and compassionate women when it comes to success.
The caliber of young women is astonishing. These women excel in the top of their classes, student

The Criminological Theory For Mike Tyson
The criminological theory for Mike Tyson is a classical theory. The criminological theory classical
is "Crime occurs when the benefits outweigh the costs– when people pursue self– interest in the
absence of effective punishments. Crime is a free–willed choice. See also deterrence, rational
choice." Mike Tyson allegedly raped her on July 19 in his hotel room. Mike Tyson was convicted
with rape on March 26, 1992. That put a pause in the famous Mike Tyson boxing career for a while.
Rape is a despicable crime that some can't be forgiven or forgotten. Rape is an act of sexual violence
towards another human being without their consents. It's not only if you have their consent, they
also have to be old enough. Rape will give you the consequences of going to jail. Doing so will
affect the person that has committed it and the person that has been violated. Classical Theory
applies to Mike Tyson in much different type of components. Mike Tyson wanted sex with a young
female and he received it. That falls under the category of when you pursue self–interest. In many or
almost all cases of rape it seems like it is self–interest. Once you commit rape you should know that
there will be consequences if you are caught. But, in Mike Tyson case he claims that she gave him
consent to have sex with the young female. So that believed Mike Tyson to not suffer any
consequence because she gave him permission. The classical theory also applies to Mike Tyson
because it also means that "crime is a

Miss America Pageant Reflection By John Oliver
Humor's powerful, influential qualities that key in on deficient human behaviors combined with
societal constructs that evolve from them in a way that reveals their absurdity, often to a hilarious
degree, is what makes satire entertaining and, often, interestingly informative. Comedians that
engage in satire deliver a message that may be considered rude if spoken by any other means. Satire
disarms the audience and pardons the comic from responsibility for their criticisms, and is an
especially powerful tool in repressive political and social realms. "Last Week Tonight with John
Oliver" uses the satirical "news" format as a means to address the ridiculousness of beauty pageants
as it continues to objectify women in a climate in which social constructs are shifting towards
feminist equality and persuasion of the audience to agree with the commentary. Considering the
context of the Miss America Pageant reflection by John Oliver in his satirical "news" program, his
goal is to select a particular topic to deconstruct and discuss the inadequacies with a humoristic flair.
The social climate from the early 20th Century introduction of the Miss America Pageant to current
day is vastly different, and while the pageant evolved over the last 90 plus years, the basic tenets
remain. Today's woman is considered to be independent, strong, intelligent and the physical
appearance is but a side note. However, the pageant maintains the focus on physical appearance,

Little Girls Participating in Beauty Pageants
For the sake of young girls, we try to save them from their insecurities, which is fairly significant. I
perceive that beauty pageants are vigorous for girls, it assists them to get rid of stage fright, or low
self–esteem. As a firm believer, I acknowledge the fact that pageant girls will develop as beautiful,
sophisticated women. Different contests allow girls to have discipline and self–control to continue
and follow the strict path of life. Such as exercising, dieting, and just totally putting effort into a
competitive venue, and all of its significance. Despite a few misconceptions, beauty pageants are

Beauty pageants are events that little girls dream of. This dream however, was not an overnight well
planned event, the history of The Miss America pageant started as a beauty contest a long time
before now. The beauty pageant was held on September the seventh and the eighth of 1921. Beauty
pageants have evolved over the years, after World War 2, shows were made to represent the ideal
woman a feminine, wife like the keeper of the household. But now, pageants have different selection
criteria. It all depends on how women are perceived in society. Traits can range from high and
independent to soft and feminine. The winner of pageants will be recognized as successful and
beautiful and will embody well being traits. An example of a show that operates in this manner
would be the Miss America Pageant. It is a pageant in which winners represent the ideal woman.
People are continually instigating on the rumor of shows are for the most beautiful people in the
country. Though beauty plays an important part, the year and definition of an ideal woman in this
age play a more significant role. In 1921, Margeret Gorman won the very first beauty pageant. She
looked like Mary Pickford who was the most significant star of the day, and this was the ideal
woman of 1921. Thus, the perfect woman and year play a big part. Pageants are competitions that

Values of Miss America Pageant Essay
She's intelligence and humility. She's fair and honesty. She's Miss United States. These are not the
lyrics to the song that is played after a contestant wins the ever–so coveted crown. These are not
lyrics to any song at all actually. But why not? Aren't those all attributes most people yearn for?
While of course these characteristics are things everyone tries to perfect throughout their lifetime,
this is not the focal point of the Miss America pageant. The actual lyrics are; "She's beauty and she's
grace. She's queen of 50 states. She's elegance and taste. She's Miss United States" (Miss
Congeniality). It is shocking to see the digression in humanity's morals and values over the past

There are opposing views of this controversial subject, including the perspective that pageants have
changed in many aspects of the show criteria to make it less racy. It also provides a useful way to
allow contestants to feel better and more confident about their selves. In the last 20 years, the
pageant has decreased the importance of the swimsuit score in the overall competition; banned
professional hairdressers and makeup artists from the pageant; stopped announcing contestants'
breast, waist and hip measurements; started requiring that contestants choose a social issue for their
'personal platform'; and even ceased requiring that they wear high heels during the swimsuit
segment... Our girls require community service and must have a talent. There's also a requirement to
be in college. And we make sure that every single one of our women leaves with scholarship money
(Litman). Because of the large quantity of debate and controversy over the pageantry world through
the last 20 years, the show is altering some of their rules to fit the needs of the outraged world.
However, do they honestly expect us to believe that after those crucial yet minute changes, we
would sit back, relax and be happy with the "new and improved" show? Yes these changes do help
with creating a new name for the pageant, but it is not good enough. They decreased the overall

No More Miss America By Robin Morgan Essay
Many radical feminist groups such as the New York Radical Women group (NYRF) gathered
together as The Women Liberation Movement to protest against the deep–rooted conception of a
"traditional woman" in the United States during the Second Wave Feminism (1960s–1990s). The
Women Liberation Movement was a demonstration of challenging society's common sense, or
hegemony, which was nurtured by the dominant ideology which in this case was a gender hierarchy
where men were believed to be superior to women. The primary source "No More Miss America"
by Robin Morgan describes her experiences as a participant of the NYRF protesting against the
Miss American Pageant in Atlantic City on September 7th 1968. The NYRF group discussed ten
points of how the Miss American Pageant promoted the "traditional woman" stereotype based on
racial beauty standards, submissiveness, and inferiority to men. The NYRF protest critiqued both
the representation side of the behavioral expectation of "traditional women" as well as the structural
side of the obstacles that women faced within social institutions such as labor and educational
opportunities. With the representative side "traditional women" promoted by the Miss American
Pageant, it reinforced women's submissive and sexist inferiority and racial beauty criteria within the
structural side to be approval by men. However, there was intersectionality in the structural
obstacles and representation side extending the social discrimination based on

In 1968, a group of insurgent feminists rallied out to gather around other women to help in a protest
to fight against the hegemony of girls' beauty in the annual Miss America's Beauty Pageant. No
More Miss America was an iconic pamphlet made to call attention to multiple degrading aspects of
the beauty pageant. In it, Robin Morgan, a feminist protestor herself, argues against the dominant
ideology of beauty in society. The New York Radical Women first thought of making this movement
after realizing how the annual Miss America's Beauty pageants were so similar to livestock
competitions at county fairs. To prove this, the women put beauty pageant sashes on sheep and

protesting against the pageant. They wanted to prove their commitment to their purposes to society
by "announc[ing] a Boycott of all those commercial products related to the Pageant" (Morgan, 213).
By boycotting major corporations, it would prove to society how important and serious the issues
are. The commercial products used in the pageants are rather essential in every day lives for most
women but in order to convey the crucial objective of the New York Radical Women, the protestors
are encouraged to oppose the hegemonic ideas of society's definition of the "perfect women". The
hegemonic ideas of society's perfect women were they had to be "both sexy and wholesome,
delicate but able to cope, demure yet titillatingly bitchy" (Morgan, 215). The protestors will fight

Narration in The Turn of the Screw Essay
Narration in The Turn of the Screw
Henry James makes the governess the narrator because she keeps the readers' interest by also being
involved in the story as a main character. However, being involved on this personal level, it can
make the governess exaggerate at times and be over–emotional. Her determined and curious nature
makes her an ideal candidate to explore the mysterious happenings, however her imagination keeps
the reader in suspense, as we are never sure how much she has exaggerated the story.
This also adds tension as the full picture is never revealed. This choice of narrator is therefore
challenged by Susan Hill's description that a narrator should be 'unimaginative and straightforward'

James makes us think that there is something unusual about this, because the governess is imagining
the master appearing like that to tell her she's doing a good job, so her imagination becomes reality.
However, it soon becomes clear that this was not the person she was imagining appearing, as he is
not wearing a hat, something no gentleman would be without in Victorian times. Also it is dusk
when he appears, and all of the birds stop singing and the scene is described as 'stricken with death'
all of which create a suitable atmosphere for a spectre to appear in.
The governess's reaction to the sighting is to stand transfixed on the spot, as she cannot believe that
her imagination may have become reality. She is scared, as it says she 'stood stricken to the spot.'
However, she cannot take her eyes away from him, possibly because she doesn't know whether he is
real or a figment of her imagination. Also the fact that they are unchaperoned, and that Peter Quint
is not wearing a hat, seems to shock her most of all, as she says 'An unknown man in a lonely place
is a permitted object of fear to a young woman privately bred.', meaning that because they are alone
together, and he is wearing no hat; a sign of familiarity, she has a good right to be scared. Henry
James includes two ghosts, to increase suspense and tension, because of their relationship,
suggesting that because they were colleagues, they may be plotting to do something

and how these objectifications effect marginalized groups. Finally, the term of enlightened sexism is

the significance of these claims, the examination of how women are objectified spans a wide

One of such is Miss America of 1995, a woman who significantly contributed to culture and history.

Miss America Protest Research Paper
On September 7th, 1968, hundreds of women gathered on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, carrying
signs and singing songs that all had the main theme of protesting the Miss America Pageant. Later,
they threw items of women's oppression in what they called a freedom trash can. While the women
who were apart of the Miss America Protest worked to defy society's oppression and standards, they
also marked one of the first explorations in the feminist movement. This certain protest helped to
pave the way for many more women to come and impacted many of the basic ideas of fighting
society's norms. The NYRW (New York Radical Women) was a group of thirty–or–so women that
aided in planning the Miss America Protest. They were women that yearned to be apart ... Show

history, whether for the better or the worst. Women and women encounter was all about fighting
oppression, a main point in the protest, "anti–womanism", and sisterhood vs. individuality. The
women and men encounters were some of the make negative points in the protest. These included
the exclusion of men reporters, destroying the patriarchy, and male supremacy. Finally, the women

Women And The Media

  • 1. Women and the Media The Perfect Female Body: Long before beauty pageants, Barbie dolls, and extra–ordinarily beautiful girls, came about the idea of the female body. Whether you are a believer of creationalism, scientology, or evolutionism, somehow we all came about with the perception of the "perfect" female. Women have always been seen, and portrayed as a sex symbol, and usually the disobedient one. Dating back to B.C and the story of Adam and Eve, Eve was the naked one who bit into the fruit that god told her was forbidden. Why couldn't it have been Adam that caused such scandal, and was the cause for destruction, and crime in the world, and not Eve? From the believed beginning of time, to present day, women have really only progressed a small ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everyday of their lives, people are bombarded with advertisements pushing to sell them something, or broadcasting a new and upcoming television program. The average American sees as many as 300–500 advertisements per day. Some see as many as 1,200 a day. (Jean Kilbourne, Ed. D.) General media is tied with public relations, and has become a source of entertainment to the public eye. Women are usually seen as eye–candy, to attract the male heterosexual audience. Men and woman are usually portrayed in different ways, on national television, and Hollywood films. Men usually play the tough guy, macho man roles, while the women are predominately represented as white, young, glamorous, heterosexual, and less influential then men. (Campbell and Carilli, 2005) Attractive women are usually displayed in both male and female advertisements, and play a double role. Women will think that if they purchase this product, they will resemble the model advertising the product, and the men are tricked to think that if they purchase the product, that they will attract women like the ones advertising the product. This is the "sex sells" propaganda tactic. Models in the advertisements aren't supposed to look like the "average," ordinary people. To sell products, advertisers use computer generation tools, to erase any "flaws," to appeal to a consumer. The goals of print media are usually reached, and out to target the younger audience. • 2. Stereotypes In I Want To Be Miss America Both of these excerpts come from a new title called representation, and this is accurately shown in both excerpts. It fits into this category, because it shows how Americans think of beauty as a representation to your mentality . We see in " I Want to be Miss America " that Americans have a predicament in the way we see women in terms of beauty and capability . The author of this excerpt describes the ambition of young a girl , which is adjusting to an American lifestyle , to be Miss America . The Immigrants now understand that fitting in is an important part of the American lifestyle , and affects our daily lives . You have a leader and twenty followers . Just because you don't quite have the same exact features as the same person next to you doesn't mean that you need to be like them or you are ugly . Younger people feel that way today . I feel that if we didn't judge people based on beauty , and do judge them on heart then the world would operate more smoothly . Everyone desires to fit in , because if you don't you will not have any friends . The fifty ladies are not just judged on beauty . They are compared on beauty , talent , and intellect . The whole world should see things this way , because it doesn't exclude , judge , or shun people based on beauty . Another part that interest me was how the girl was talking about how most of the girls on the stage would mostly likely become a house mom , and that they will not be able to receive a higher paying degree . I cannot say this about her time period , but I feel that now women and men are equally the same . Anyone can do anything they put their mind too . • 3. The Purpose Of Beauty Pageants Approximately, 2.5 million women participate in US beauty pageants each year. The pageants are supposedly meant to act as a stage for female contestants, to promote community service and gain scholarships are often affiliated with objectification. I clearly disagree with the whole idea and believe that the sole purpose of beauty pageants is female exhibitionism. The trend of these started when P.T. Barnum invited a few handfuls of women to brandish their figures. At first this was ridiculed as scandalous but then after a few alterations the idea this preposterous event has flourished into a business attracting businesses; acting as an economic driver. Girls from all around the globe have once dreamt of being crowned and simply cannot avoid feeling contentment while receiving a small compliment about looking physically attractive or beautiful. According to the Oxford dictionary, Beauty is "a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight". Some believe that beauty pageants were meant as a stage to gain scholarships but this is distortion of facts as Miss America one of the most popular pageants started in 1921 but "it was only in 1945 that Miss America even began their scholarship". These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The men folk do not have to do anything of this sort or look like real life Kens at any contest, but instead women have to be physically attractive to gain scholarships and look like real life Barbies. • 4. Beauty Pageants : The Beauty Pageant Essay Know The Real Beauty Pageant "Nine out of ten girls in pageants ages 14 to 16 suffered from suicidal tendencies or depression" (Child beauty pageant). A beauty pageant is a competition judged mainly on four events to determine the winner: Modeling sportswear, evening wear, physical beauty, talent, and personal interviews. Beauty pageants originally can be traced to the first Miss America Pageant, which was held in 1921. Miss Universe and Miss USA soon followed, by the 1960's, beauty pageants were firmly entrenched in American culture. "Beauty pageants normally start at six months to 18 years of age. Statistics show that about 5,000 child beauty pageants are held every year and about 250,000 child contestants participate" (Child beauty pageant). Not all pageants cater to just girls, most pageants provide scholarships, the Miss America beauty pageant has provided over 45 million dollars in scholarships. Although opponents claim beauty pageants boost children's self esteem and confidence, they reinforce the idea that a woman should be valued for her physical appearance, the action pageant moms are cruel and borderline abusive, they promote an unrealistic expectation of beauty. In class we read multiple of stories with different defining moments. The two that stuck out to me were " I Want to Be Miss America" and "Here's Herbie". In "I Want to Be Miss America", the defining moment came late for the two girls. Every year they would watch the Miss America beauty pageant with their parents and strive and wish to look american. I find it interesting that the author was passionate about showing women they do not have to focus on their looks, they can be something better. They do not have to let men decide their whole lives for them. "so are women in our society forced daily to compete for male approval, enslave by ludicrous beauty standards we ourselves are conditioned to take seriously." (page 33). • 8. Want To Be Miss America Thesis When facing a problem that seems to not have an answer right away, people turn to weapons to get their point across, or to result in violence. Violence happens when knives, guns, and other literal weapons are applied to the situation at hand. But, when figurative weapons are applied, like Parks's camera, it shows true power when looked upon by others. The so called 'weapons' are made to create a point, and tell a story of what is going on in the present, which eventually turns into history's greatest captured moments. The battle against injustice has happened throughout history many times, but the decisions on how we as people, or a nation, take action on the matter that creates a message across the world. During the Civil Rights Movement, the tactic of non–violence was used as a tool by the leaders, most used by Martin Luther King Jr. Some of the nonviolence acts that Jr. used as tools were petitions, speeches, art, and marches. These acts were not used to create brawls among people, but rather to create peace. Helen Williams recalled that 'the first few days, the mail was incredible. We got thousands of notes congratulating Vanessa. But a week after Vanessa won, reality set in. The tone of some of the letters changed. Someone wrote that they were going to throw acid in her face. People sent notes: "YOU'RE DEAD BITCH," "You'll Never Be Our Miss America," "You're all black scum."' 'We experienced racism from both camps–black and white. We got letters from black people ... That was a time when it became clear that the old caste system was crumbling, and a new one would have to take its place. In October 1982, President Ronald Reagan announced his administration's War on Drugs. Cloaked in race–neutral language, this so–called War on Drugs offered whites opposed to racial reform a unique opportunity to express their hostility toward blacks and black progress, without being exposed to the charge of racism. The racist response that Vanessa Williams received and her family faced in 1983 was clearly overt. When crack cocaine hit the streets in 1985, the media made an effort to sensationalize the emergence of this new drug in inner–city neighborhoods. This media sensationalism effectively made the construction of prisons the nation's main housing program for the urban poor. Beauty Pageants: Why They Are Good for Children Beauty Pageants: Why they are good for children Beauty Pageants have a positive impact on children because they will boost children's self–esteem up. Ms Ng Siau Hwei, a senior psychologist from departments of pediatrics at National University Hospital in Singapore says, "Getting involved with dressing and make–up may be a novel experience for kids and showing their talents in front of a crowd can boost their confidence" (Yap 1). By children being able to express their talents in front of a group of people dressed up and have their make–up done in pageants will boost a child's self– esteem because they are able to be themselves. By doing that, the child, teenager, or adult will have experience in speaking in front of people which will help them in the long run. Rita Panahi, writer of article Wise Up, Girls, Stupidity Is Never a Good Look, said, "Let's be frank, beauty pageants are, funnily enough, all about beauty and nothing else" (5). This is so wrong because beauty pageants are not just about beauty, a lot of them are actually about question, talents, and speaking. By people saying that beauty pageants are only about beauty, it puts a bad reputation on beauty pageants. Beauty pageants are not bad at all, they actually help children more than school when it comes to speaking out in front of people. In school, more than likely, they know almost more than half the people they are talking too, but in beauty pageants, they more than likely only know the people they brought with them, so out of the hundreds of people, they probably only know 5 people. By that being said, beauty pageants do help children with their social skills. The last reason as to why child beauty pageants have a positive impact on children is because they can earn scholarship money to the college of their choice. For example, a 15 year–old, Nicola Dalryimple, former winner of Trinidad and Tobago Pageant, received a $5,000 scholarship to a college of her choice ("Trinidad and Tobago" 1–2). • 26. Miss America Pageant Reflection By John Oliver Humor's powerful, influential qualities that key in on deficient human behaviors combined with societal constructs that evolve from them in a way that reveals their absurdity, often to a hilarious degree, is what makes satire entertaining and, often, interestingly informative. Comedians that engage in satire deliver a message that may be considered rude if spoken by any other means. Satire disarms the audience and pardons the comic from responsibility for their criticisms, and is an especially powerful tool in repressive political and social realms. "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" uses the satirical "news" format as a means to address the ridiculousness of beauty pageants as it continues to objectify women in a climate in which social constructs are shifting towards feminist equality and persuasion of the audience to agree with the commentary. Considering the context of the Miss America Pageant reflection by John Oliver in his satirical "news" program, his goal is to select a particular topic to deconstruct and discuss the inadequacies with a humoristic flair. The social climate from the early 20th Century introduction of the Miss America Pageant to current day is vastly different, and while the pageant evolved over the last 90 plus years, the basic tenets remain. Beauty pageants have evolved over the years, after World War 2, shows were made to represent the ideal woman a feminine, wife like the keeper of the household. Because of the large quantity of debate and controversy over the pageantry world through the last 20 years, the show is altering some of their rules to fit the needs of the outraged world. However, do they honestly expect us to believe that after those crucial yet minute changes, we would sit back, relax and be happy with the "new and improved" show? Yes these changes do help with creating a new name for the pageant, but it is not good enough. They decreased the overall percentage of importance for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. No More Miss America By Robin Morgan Essay Many radical feminist groups such as the New York Radical Women group (NYRF) gathered together as The Women Liberation Movement to protest against the deep–rooted conception of a "traditional woman" in the United States during the Second Wave Feminism (1960s–1990s). The Women Liberation Movement was a demonstration of challenging society's common sense, or hegemony, which was nurtured by the dominant ideology which in this case was a gender hierarchy where men were believed to be superior to women. The primary source "No More Miss America" by Robin Morgan describes her experiences as a participant of the NYRF protesting against the Miss American Pageant in Atlantic City on September 7th 1968. The NYRF group discussed ten points of how the Miss American Pageant promoted the "traditional woman" stereotype based on racial beauty standards, submissiveness, and inferiority to men. The NYRF protest critiqued both the representation side of the behavioral expectation of "traditional women" as well as the structural side of the obstacles that women faced within social institutions such as labor and educational opportunities. With the representative side "traditional women" promoted by the Miss American Pageant, it reinforced women's submissive and sexist inferiority and racial beauty criteria within the structural side to be approval by men. However, there was intersectionality in the structural obstacles and representation side extending the social discrimination based on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Robin Morgan No More Miss America Analysis In 1968, a group of insurgent feminists rallied out to gather around other women to help in a protest to fight against the hegemony of girls' beauty in the annual Miss America's Beauty Pageant. No More Miss America was an iconic pamphlet made to call attention to multiple degrading aspects of the beauty pageant. In it, Robin Morgan, a feminist protestor herself, argues against the dominant ideology of beauty in society. The New York Radical Women first thought of making this movement after realizing how the annual Miss America's Beauty pageants were so similar to livestock competitions at county fairs. To prove this, the women put beauty pageant sashes on sheep and walked them around the boardwalk. The organization went through great trouble to protest their ... The pamphlet, No More Miss America, was written to provide readers with ten reasons why the New York Radical Women were protesting against the pageant. They wanted to prove their commitment to their purposes to society by "announc[ing] a Boycott of all those commercial products related to the Pageant" (Morgan, 213). By boycotting major corporations, it would prove to society how important and serious the issues are. The commercial products used in the pageants are rather essential in every day lives for most women but in order to convey the crucial objective of the New York Radical Women, the protestors are encouraged to oppose the hegemonic ideas of society's definition of the "perfect women". The hegemonic ideas of society's perfect women were they had to be "both sexy and wholesome, delicate but able to cope, demure yet titillatingly bitchy" (Morgan, 215). The protestors will fight and evaluate all the hegemonic ideologies put upon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Narration in The Turn of the Screw Essay Narration in The Turn of the Screw Henry James makes the governess the narrator because she keeps the readers' interest by also being involved in the story as a main character. However, being involved on this personal level, it can make the governess exaggerate at times and be over–emotional. Her determined and curious nature makes her an ideal candidate to explore the mysterious happenings, however her imagination keeps the reader in suspense, as we are never sure how much she has exaggerated the story. This also adds tension as the full picture is never revealed. This choice of narrator is therefore challenged by Susan Hill's description that a narrator should be 'unimaginative and straightforward' as the governess' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... James makes us think that there is something unusual about this, because the governess is imagining the master appearing like that to tell her she's doing a good job, so her imagination becomes reality. However, it soon becomes clear that this was not the person she was imagining appearing, as he is not wearing a hat, something no gentleman would be without in Victorian times. Also it is dusk when he appears, and all of the birds stop singing and the scene is described as 'stricken with death' all of which create a suitable atmosphere for a spectre to appear in. The governess's reaction to the sighting is to stand transfixed on the spot, as she cannot believe that her imagination may have become reality. She is scared, as it says she 'stood stricken to the spot.' However, she cannot take her eyes away from him, possibly because she doesn't know whether he is real or a figment of her imagination. Also the fact that they are unchaperoned, and that Peter Quint is not wearing a hat, seems to shock her most of all, as she says 'An unknown man in a lonely place is a permitted object of fear to a young woman privately bred.', meaning that because they are alone together, and he is wearing no hat; a sign of familiarity, she has a good right to be scared. Henry James includes two ghosts, to increase suspense and tension, because of their relationship, suggesting that because they were colleagues, they may be plotting to do something ... However, most Deaf and deaf people have proven that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and try hard enough to achieve your goal. One of such is Miss America of 1995, a woman who significantly contributed to culture and history. Heather Whitestone McCallum was born in Alabama on the 24th of February, 1973. At just 18 months old, she lost her hearing due to influenza. Her mother, determined to provide a brighter future for her daughter, sought out to teach Heather how to speak by enrolling her in dance classes; as rhythm may help her learn speech. Miss America Protest Research Paper On September 7th, 1968, hundreds of women gathered on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, carrying signs and singing songs that all had the main theme of protesting the Miss America Pageant.
