7. Textual Analysis
The theme of innocent children playing with seemingly harmless toys shows the
equilibrium starting out. However, when the music (non-diegetic sound) starts
playing the innocence of dolls and china cups is ripped away. This is the second
step in Todrovs theory; a disruption of the past tranquility. The film is very slowly
paced yet everything happens so fast. The children jumping out of the window is set
to put us on edge and recognize the severity of the horrors about to come. It all
sounds serious and dramatic; it is both psychologically thrilling and physically fretful.
The old fashioned lighting filter evokes the feeling of wonder and apprehension. This
is because of the way we think about past years; dark, mysterious, cruel. Anything,
and most things that we weren’t present in, nor get the opportunity to be present in;
create strong opinions, we feed off of each other. One person making elder times
dark, makes it dark to everyone else.
