1. ‘The Possession’ Timeline
0.08- Establishing shot of house, everything calm and tranquil.
0.11- First view of victim, looks innocent, dressed childish, big smile.
0.17- Straight away, dad disobeyed what mum says, we know everything will start to go downhill once characters
contradict one another.
0.26- Victim is playing around with white gloves and hat; symbolising innocence
0.30- Little girl picks up the box from the boot sale and says its „cool‟ and father lets her have what she wants and he
buys it for her.
0.41- Moment of disequilibrium,“I think whoever made this didn‟t want to open it” Little girl then opens it.
0.46- Whispers begin, diagetic background music drops out.
0.49- Tone Card “Based on a real story”, audience can relate to it more.
0.53- “Have you noticed anything odd with Emily?” Dad has suspicions.
0.58-1.04- Strange possessed behaviour from the little girl, innocence has been taken and eventually lashes out at dad
1.05- Scream from dad as Emily stabs him with the fork
1.06- Lightning bolt contrasting the dark room, only light exposing a shot of the box, by itself on the table.
1.09- Possession is linked to religion, a common theme for horror films. Hebrew descent.
1.13- Mum realises odd behaviour and is then targeted, red glasses smash, red symbolising blood, fear and anger.
1.21- Over the shoulder angle, POV shot from dad as she looks in the mirror of the box, her eyes are rolled back, first
physical ghostly activity witnessed.
1.24- Black out, then shows girl unpossessed hugging her mother; split personality.
1.28- While being possessed, the victim is dressed in a white robe signifying innocence and purity. Again as ideas
contradict, it foreshadows doom.
1.34- Slow motion sequence/POV shot leading up to door, allows us to empathise with characters and build tension.
Bug-like creatures surround the door and fill up the room when the door is open.
1.40- Tone Card “Darkness”. „Spooky‟ word, common paradigm of horror films.
1.42- Hospital setting, another typical location for horror movies.
1.52- Shot of deformed face. Scares the audience seeing something abnormal happening to a human being.
1.58- Music drops out again to focus of dad‟s dialogue; reading from the Hebrew Holy Book.
2.01- Girl screams, diagetic music starts up again, fast paced, sounds like a chorus singing, almost like a church choir.
Again, that religious theme is portrayed.
2.02-2.14- Shows scenes from throughout the film, Emily‟s strange behaviour, almost like a montage of events.
2.16- Blackout. Whispers “I saw something in her”... Then special effects are used to show two fingers reaching out
from Emily‟s throat. This gross image is used to disturb the audience and even affect them in a way that unsettles their
own personal environment.
2.23- Tone Card stating movie name and dates, in the background, a sort of spiritual chant is whispered, continuing the
religion theme.
