Few New York City experiences are as iconic as ice-skating in Central Park, and
Wollman Rink’s legacy goes well beyond its roles in romantic films like Love Story
and Serendipity.
The rink first opened in 1950, but skaters had been lacing up in Central Park for
nearly a century prior. During the Park’s planning, locals demanded a place to
skate since the City’s major waterways rarely froze. The Lake opened for
ice-skating in 1858, and the Pond quickly followed suit. Though both man-made
bodies were eventually closed to skaters, the picturesque Wollman Rink has kept
the beloved seasonal tradition alive.
Skaters and spectators can warm up at the snack bar serving assorted food and
hot cocoa. Not to be outshined by the Park’s warm-weather attractions, Wollman
Rink transforms each summer into the Victorian Gardens Amusement Park.
