Southern Massachusetts has a rich maritime history. It was where the Pilgrims landed on the Mayflower in Plymouth in 1620, founding the first English colony in the United States. The region is marked by numerous lighthouses, ports, and historic houses that evidence the importance of maritime activity over time. Cape Cod, often called "The Cape," is home to the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis and was a popular summer destination for the Boston and New York elite, who built many grand seaside homes there.
