Dear Selection Committee,
It is with great joy and pride that I write this letter of recommendation for Ms. Tiyata
Winters for the honor of SMECO Middle School Math Teacher of the Year Award for Charles
County Public Schools.
Ms. Winters shows all the characteristics you need to have in order to be the difference in
children’s lives. I had the honor of meeting Ms. Winter’s when I was an Instructional Assistant at
Jenifer Elementary through a friend. It was there that I saw the passion she had for teaching, math
but most importantly the care she has for her students. You always hear or wish that you had that
one teacher who goes over and beyond to help. That is Ms. Winters 100 percent. Over the years I
have looked at Ms. Winters as my mentor. Whenever I have had a question or problem I always
went to her because I know that she would not lead me in the wrong direction.
In the summer of 2014 I wanted to make the move to middle school to get experience
working with older students. I had the honor at that time working with Ms. Winters at Matthew
Henson Middle School. Ms. Winters was the math chair, PBIS coordinator, and coordinated many
different other activities for the 8th grade and school. She served as a mentor to many teachers and a
model for how math should be taught to struggling teachers.
Ms. Winters day was not just a 7:45-3:15 job. She would come in early and leave late so
that students struggling in the content would be able to get tutoring. Ms. Winters would come up
with creative and engaging activities to meet the standards of common core. One thing that I
admire about Ms. Winter’s is how she can incorporate technology to make math more interested for
students.
As I transferred to Mattawoman Middle School this year, Ms. Winters still remains as my
mentor and friend. I know that if I have any questions I can just pick the phone up and call her. I
