Lithuania has cold winters with temperatures dropping below -23°C. Several holidays are celebrated in winter, including Christmas Eve on December 24th where families decorate trees and have special meals, Christmas on the 25th when children see what Santa brought, and New Year which involves both family gatherings and public celebrations with fireworks at midnight. Other winter holidays are Three Kings Day on January 6th, St. Valentine's Day on February 14th, and Independence Day on February 16th. Shrove Tuesday in late winter/early spring marks the end of winter with carnival celebrations.
