With a tight Atlantic Coast League South race and seven teams earning postseason
berths, the 2007-2008 Cape and Islands high school boys basketball campaign proved
an exciting take.
Nauset (17-3 in the regular season) edged Falmouth (17-5) for the ACL South title.
But the Warriors were frustrated by the Clippers, losing twice to them in the regular
season and again in the Division 2 South quarterfinals. Falmouth eventually fell to
Catholic Memorial in a close South semifinal contest, the same team that had beaten
Nauset in the South finals the previous season. Clippers fans flocked to watch their
team as the success multiplied.
“The following we had, the support in the community and the high school, really
brought the student body together,” said Falmouth coach Paul Lundberg. “That was the
big story.”
Nowhere was that more evident than in the postseason, when a big crowd filled the
field house for a home game against Sharon. Then Falmouth fans hit the road to help
pack the Nauset gym, a big building that even had packed temporary bleachers set up
on the practice court behind the benches, for the game.
The loud but well-behaved crowd saw a contest that showed all the positives of high
school athletics. Just as many fans traveled to Taunton for the close tourney loss to
CM.
“Every game was close, every game a battle,” Lundberg said. “Our first four games,
we were losing with three minutes left and won them all. We were 10-1 at home, the
only loss in overtime to Plymouth North.”
Falmouth won with defense – holding opponents under 50 points in 14 games. The
Clippers didn’t have a player average in double figures during the regular season.
Nauset lost to only two teams this season – three times to Falmouth and once to
Brookline. The Warriors were a veteran team looking to again make it to UMass-
Boston and maybe beyond. Falmouth got in its way, but the experience of last year
helped pave the way to a league title.

“We talked a few times during the season, especially with the kids who played a lot a
year ago,” coach Keith Arnold said. “They knew it was there. Not a cocky feeling, but
even during timeouts, there was a feeling they knew they could get it done. It made it
interesting.”
Beau Almodobar steered Nantucket to a 14-6 campaign and a Lighthouse Conference
title. The veteran coach said it was a matter of consistent hard work and playing
together.
Cape Tech (12-8) coach Brent Warren said he stressed defense this year, and that
proved invaluable in a season that ended at the hands of Div. 4 South champion Avon
in the first round of sectionals. It was a tough draw, but Warren was pleased with how
his team evolved.
“That was our big thing, and all the kids played great defense,” he said. “Scoring was
just one aspect of our game.”
Provincetown, under coach John McDonough, made it to Div. 4 South Sectionals with a
12-8 mark, a major feat considering the Fishermen went, realistically, six deep and
didn’t have any seniors. The lack of numbers didn’t bother them. “They practiced
really hard and put on a superb season,” the coach said. “We ran up and down the
floor and put up shots in under 12 seconds.”
McDonough coached the Fishermen despite teaching at Bridgewater State, piling up
the miles on his daily commute.
Mashpee (13-9) and Martha’s Vineyard (12-8) both played well enough to make the
postseason, with Mashpee pulling out a victory before falling.
Sturgis didn’t qualify for sectionals but went 9-10, the most wins – by far – in the
program’s brief history. The previous record was four.
Harwich won the MIAA Div. 4 boys basketball Sportsmanship Award.
Upper Cape may have been rebuilding this year, but in 17 of its 21 games the
opposition was a team that qualified for the postseason.

Nauset (17-3 in the regular season) edged Falmouth (17-5) for the ACL South title. But the Warriors were frustrated by the Clippers, losing twice to them in the regular season and again in the Division 2 South quarterfinals. Falmouth eventually fell to Catholic Memorial in a close South semifinal contest, the same team that had beaten Nauset in the South finals the previous season. Clippers fans flocked to watch their team as the success multiplied. “The following we had, the support in the community and the high school, really brought the student body together,” said Falmouth coach Paul Lundberg. “That was the big story.” Nowhere was that more evident than in the postseason, when a big crowd filled the field house for a home game against Sharon. Then Falmouth fans hit the road to help pack the Nauset gym, a big building that even had packed temporary bleachers set up on the practice court behind the benches, for the game. The loud but well-behaved crowd saw a contest that showed all the positives of high school athletics. Just as many fans traveled to Taunton for the close tourney loss to CM. “Every game was close, every game a battle,” Lundberg said. “Our first four games, we were losing with three minutes left and won them all. We were 10-1 at home, the only loss in overtime to Plymouth North.” Falmouth won with defense – holding opponents under 50 points in 14 games. The Clippers didn’t have a player average in double figures during the regular season. Nauset lost to only two teams this season – three times to Falmouth and once to Brookline. The Warriors were a veteran team looking to again make it to UMass- Boston and maybe beyond. Falmouth got in its way, but the experience of last year helped pave the way to a league title. Menu
  • 2. “We talked a few times during the season, especially with the kids who played a lot a year ago,” coach Keith Arnold said. “They knew it was there. Not a cocky feeling, but even during timeouts, there was a feeling they knew they could get it done. It made it interesting.” Beau Almodobar steered Nantucket to a 14-6 campaign and a Lighthouse Conference title. The veteran coach said it was a matter of consistent hard work and playing together. Cape Tech (12-8) coach Brent Warren said he stressed defense this year, and that proved invaluable in a season that ended at the hands of Div. 4 South champion Avon in the first round of sectionals. It was a tough draw, but Warren was pleased with how his team evolved. “That was our big thing, and all the kids played great defense,” he said. “Scoring was just one aspect of our game.” Provincetown, under coach John McDonough, made it to Div. 4 South Sectionals with a 12-8 mark, a major feat considering the Fishermen went, realistically, six deep and didn’t have any seniors. The lack of numbers didn’t bother them. “They practiced really hard and put on a superb season,” the coach said. “We ran up and down the floor and put up shots in under 12 seconds.” McDonough coached the Fishermen despite teaching at Bridgewater State, piling up the miles on his daily commute. Mashpee (13-9) and Martha’s Vineyard (12-8) both played well enough to make the postseason, with Mashpee pulling out a victory before falling. Sturgis didn’t qualify for sectionals but went 9-10, the most wins – by far – in the program’s brief history. The previous record was four. Harwich won the MIAA Div. 4 boys basketball Sportsmanship Award. Upper Cape may have been rebuilding this year, but in 17 of its 21 games the opposition was a team that qualified for the postseason.
