Over the past four years, students from Winnetka have consistently scored lower than most other New Trier feeder districts on the ERB exam in areas of verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative reasoning, and mathematics. Specifically, Winnetka has had a lower percentage of students scoring in the above average range (seventh to ninth stanines) compared to districts like Wilmette, Glencoe, and Kenilworth. These exam scores are used for placement in leveled classes at New Trier, and administrators anticipate more Winnetka students may be placed in lower level courses as a result of their lower math scores.

• Provides the CPT-4 test for assessment, which is more rigorous than the ISAT
• Administered by New Trier to all incoming 8th graders in the fall of 8th grade year
• Used for placement into leveled classes at NT
About the Data
• This analysis is done by parents who have collected the ERB reports from every district for the past
several years. Winnetka D36 administrators prepare a different report that can be found in the School
Board packet for the January Board Meeting.
• Education researcher and D36 like to have a minimum of three years of data which makes this four-
year trend analysis statistically more valid.
• The three feeder districts to New Trier that have less than 100 students per grade, Avoca, Kenilworth
and Sunset Ridge, are likely to have more variability than the larger districts of Wilmette, Glencoe and
Winnetka.

3. Executive Summary: 4-year ERB data trend shows Winnetka students are
not performing as well as students from other New Trier feeder districts.
• The ERB is used for placement into academic levels at New Trier. The test assesses four areas:
Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning, and Mathematics.
• In all test areas, Winnetka had a lower percentage of students scoring “above average” (in the
seventh through ninth stanines) than most New Trier feeder districts.
• Math ERB scores influence math, science and foreign language placement at New Trier. For this
year’s D36 8th grade class, per administrators, “We anticipate, due to [low math scores], more
students may be placed in level 3 courses at NT.”* The highest level at NT is level 4.
• NT publishes detailed information about academic profile of its classes. Last year, 26% of the 2014
graduating class took mostly 4-level or only 4-level classes. Link here:

• These results are evidence to support our complaint that Winnetka’s controversial math materials,
lack of an instructional reading program, and lack of programs or acceleration for high-readiness
learners make its students less prepared for NT.
• District 36, on the other hand, incorrectly concludes in its ERB report, “D36 curriculum prepares
students for NT; CWS [Carleton Washburne School] students’ academic performance is in line with
other freshmen at NT.”*
