University Engineering Projects (all listed projects were Self Projects)
Project # 1 “Two Stroke Single Cylinder Engine With Four Wheel Drive”
My team designed and fabricated a five seat vehicle
Utilizinga two stroke single cylinder engine
The chassis and other parts were manufactured with alloy pipes to reduce weight
Incorporated rack and pinion steering, front independent shock absorbers and leaf spring system in the back
We introduced a higher rate of air flow, bored the cylinder wall to further increase the ratio of engine power
A four speed gear box gave the vehicle the added function for reverse and forward motion
This in effect gave us a higher rate of torque with four speeds in either direction
Result – to ascertain if we could bring down the cost of manufacturinga four wheeled vehicle with an attractive price tagfor the
general public.
Project # 2 Metal Melting Crucible with Auto Stirrer
My team designed and fabricated a metal meltingcrucible with auto stirrer attached
The crucible wasof stainless steel construction
The top was sealed with three vents, one for a gas inlet, one an outlet, and one for the metal drop
We wanted to ascertain as to when metals melt and when they would catch fire after reaching a certain temperature
(i.e. Magnesium (mg) to melt without usingflux
Composite materialscould also be melted, then mixed with reinforcement metal by using the auto stirrer
Result - the oxidation of the molten metal is then avoided
Further – special types of gases could also be employed during the melting stage of the process
Project # 3 Tribological & Structural Analysis of Aluminium based Metal Matrix Components
Using aluminium (lm24, Im6, al6061 asthe base material with added reinforcement materials like sic, A12O3 & b4c at a
percentage of 2%, 4%, 6%, & 8%
The metal wasthen melted using a stir casting methodology
Adding magnesium to increase the wet-ability propertiesto the base metal and the reinforcement materials
When the samples were melted they were tested for tensile strength, hardness, microstructure, chemical composition and wear
test.
Upon completion Ansys Software wasused to determine the structural strength
The analysis confirmed that they material consisted of excellent wear resistant properties with improved hardness
The analysis further provided important information showing a potential cost saving measure in place of aluminium
