Phillis Wheatley was an 18th century poet from Senegal who was kidnapped as a child and brought to America as a slave. She learned to read and write in English and became the first African American and first slave to publish a book of poetry. Some of her interests included writing poetry, reading, young writers, soul music, and the TV show Roots. She lived in Washington D.C. in the 1700s.
