Eli Whitney was an American inventor born in 1765 in Massachusetts. He is renowned for inventing the cotton gin in 1793, which helped vastly increase cotton production in the United States. The cotton gin solved the problem of cleaning cotton by removing seeds and debris ten times faster than could be done by hand. By 1880, cotton production in the U.S. increased tenfold due to Whitney's invention of the cotton gin.
