Why you should get a worse computer

ABSTRACT: We're used to thinking of technology as always progressing, and in terms of hardware that's definitely true: CPUs are getting more powerful, memory cheaper, networks faster, and so on, forever. But why does it feel like actually using computers is getting slower and shittier? Abundant computing resources and a culture of optimizing for developer productivity above all else have led to a situation where most hardware improvements are instantly negated by software inefficiency. This is a problem known from other domains (such as traffic flow), where increasing capacity is paradoxically not reducing but rather increasing the load on the system, resulting in a worse overall outcome. This talk discusses how we could approach this problem as a field, and makes some provocative recommendations — such as getting a worse computer. BIO: Tobias Bernard is an Italian interaction designer based in Berlin. He's a member of the GNOME design team and works for Purism on the Librem 5 team. When he’s not doing GNOME stuff, he's working to avoid climate disaster through mass civil resistance.

Dati aperti: un diritto digitale, da rivendicare e da alimentare
ABSTRACT: L'accesso ai dati è essenziale per una democrazia partecipativa e informata, e rappresenta un diritto fondamentale, al pari di quello di voto o di espressione. Tuttavia, spesso non è percepito come tale, ma come una mera esigenza di tecnici o appassionati di trasparenza. Discuteremo allora non solo come rivendicare efficacemente questo diritto, ma anche come è cruciale e vantaggioso contribuire attivamente alla sua crescita e al suo miglioramento. Ci concentreremo sull'importanza di dati leggibili meccanicamente, aggiornati, ben descritti e condivisi in modo da favorirne un utilizzo efficace. Perché un approccio proattivo non solo amplifica l'accesso ai dati, ma ne aumenta anche il valore per l'intera comunità.
BIO: Andrea Borruso è esperto in Sistemi Informativi Geografici (GIS) e Open Data. Ha lavorato nella progettazione di GIS e nel data processing di dati spaziali (e non), sia per la Pubblica Amministrazione, che per aziende. Al momento è Technical Advisor presso Planetek Italia. AI nel diritto penale, dalle indagini alla redazione delle sentenze
ABSTRACT: In questa talk parlerò dell'utilizzo dell'AI sia come strumento per facilitare la commissione di reati (ad esempio attraverso l'utilizzo di social engineering nella commissione di frodi bancarie), che come strumento investigativo all'interno del procedimento penale (ad esempio attraverso l'utilizzo di sistemi di sorveglianza speciali), che come supporto ai giudici nella determinazione della pena e nella stesura delle sentenze. Infine tratterò delle possibili discriminazioni che l'utilizzo acritico di sistemi di AI può determinare nell'amministrazione della giustizia, distinguendo tra discriminazioni matematico/statistiche e sociali (come succede anche nella valutazione del credit score nella richiesta di mutui).
BIO: Dopo l'abilitazione alla professione forense, Carlotta Capizzi ha lavorato in una delle maggiori società di consulenza mondiali, occupandosi in particolar modo di sistemi di pagamento digitale e antifrode. Attualmente si occupa di compliance ICT all'interno di un importante gruppo bancario italiano, con particolare focus alle normative relative al pacchetto di finanza digitale UE (DORA, FIDA e AI Act). Di recente ha pubblicato un articolo relativo ai sistemi di sorveglianza speciale, basati sull'AI, sperimentati a Trento e Rovereto e approfondito l'interconnessione tra AI e diritto penale.

ABSTRACT: In questo talk vorrei proporre 2 linee di pensiero volte ad aggiornare il catalogo dei diritti umani alla luce delle caratteristiche tecniche dell'AI, delle sue potenzialità e dei rischi del suo utilizzo. La prima considera l'adattamento di alcuni principi tradizionali (consenso informato e non discriminazione) rispetto alle sfide poste dall'AI. La seconda comprende 4 nuovi diritti: diritto all'eroe, diritto alla discontinuità, diritto ad un ambiente umano, diritto alla AI. Farò anche qualche riferimento all'AI Act, il nuovo regolamento approvato recentemente dal Parlamento dell'Unione Europea.
BIO: Carlo Casonato è professore di diritto costituzionale comparato alla Facoltà di Giurisprudenza di Trento, titolare della Cattedra Jean Monnet di Diritto europeo dell'IA (T4F). Anticipated to shape the future of connectivity in the 2030s, 6G aims to deliver unparalleled communication services to meet the demands of hyper-connectivity.
While densely populated urban areas have traditionally been the primary beneficiaries of WCS advancements, the vision for 6G transcends city limits. Aligned with the United Nations' sustainability goals for 2030, an important aspect of 6G endeavors to democratize the benefits of ICT, fostering global connectivity sustainably. This talk delves into this particular envisioned landscape of 6G, providing insights into the future of wireless communication and guiding research efforts toward sustainable, inclusive, and high-speed connectivity solutions for the future.
Central to this discussion are two emerging technologies: Free Space Optics (FSO) and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN). These innovative solutions hold the promise of extending high-speed connectivity beyond urban hubs to underserved regions, fostering digital inclusivity, and contributing to the development of remote areas.
Through this exploration, we aim to convey the potential of 6G and its role in shaping a connected, sustainable future for all.
BIO: Mohamed-Slim Alouini, was born in Tunis, Tunisia. He earned his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1998 before serving as a faculty member at the University of Minnesota and later at Texas A&M University in Qatar. In 2009, he became a founding faculty member at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), where he currently is the Al-Khawarizmi Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and where he holds the UNESCO Chair on Education to Connect the Unconnected.
Prof. Alouini is a Fellow of the IEEE and OPTICA and his research interests encompass a wide array of research topics in wireless and satellite communications. He is currently particularly focusing on addressing the technical challenges associated with information and communication technologies (ICT) in underserved regions and is deeply committed to bridging the digital divide by tackling issues related to the uneven distribution, access to, and utilization of ICT in rural, low-income, disaster-prone, and hard-to-reach areas.
Creare il sangue artificiale: "buon sangue non mente"
ABSTRACT: La necessità di sangue ed emoderivati è costantemente elevata negli ospedali di tutto il mondo. Per questo motivo, negli anni, la creazione di "sangue artificiale" ha rappresentato una sfida che molti ricercatori hanno intrapreso. La sintesi in laboratorio di globuli rossi, partendo da cellule ematopoietiche totipotenti per sostituire le convenzionali "trasfusioni", è stata ad oggi sperimentata ma è ancora distante dal divenire pratica clinica. Tuttavia, altre componenti del sangue sono ad oggi utilizzate a scopi sostitutivi, mentre altre ancora sono state sintetizzate in laboratorio e vengono utilizzate per scopi terapeutici. Questa talk ci porterà alla scoperta di quali sono gli avanzamenti in questo campo.
BIO: Alvise Berti, Medico ricercatore dell'ospedale S. Chiara di Trento. Specializzato in Immunologia Clinica nel 2018 presso l'Università San Raffaele di Milano, consegue nel 2021 il Dottorato di Ricerca in Scienze Biomolecolari presso il CIBIO all’Università di Trento. Dopo due anni alla Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA), ha lavorato come dirigente medico nella Reumatologia dell’Ospedale APSS Santa Chiara di Trento, dove ha sviluppato una linea di ricerca traslazionale su malattie immuno-mediate, autoimmunità e infiammazione, e contribuito alla fondazione di unità dedicate alla cura di malattie autoimmuni sistemiche. Dal 2022 è ricercatore presso il Centro Interdipartimentale di Scienze Mediche (CISMed) dell'Università di Trento.

Data Sense-making: navigating the world through the lens of information design
ABSTRACT: Every day, we're inundated with a staggering amount of information that continues to grow exponentially. How can we process all these inputs and grasp even a fraction of the available knowledge? In my talk, I'll offer a personal reflection on information design and its tools for accessing the world's complexity without necessarily simplifying it. And, why not, I'll also share how I planned a data-driven visit to my favorite theme park.

ABSTRACT: Shotgun metagenomics provides a comprehensive snapshot of the entire microbial community present in a given environment. PreBiomics, an academic start-up of the University of Trento, employs state-of-the-art sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools to allow the identification and characterization of the multitude of known and unknown bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms present, shedding light on their functional capabilities, interactions, and potential impact on health or specific applications. BIO: Mattia Bolzan is the Chief Technology Officer in PreBiomics with more than 8 years of experience as a scientist and bioinformatician between academia and industry. Presenterò la visione dietro Home4MeAi, l'architettura tecnica, ma anche come trovare risorse senza costi per avviare un progetto. Presenterò anche Federico Villa: un ex atleta paralimpico che crede nella dimensione sociale della tecnologia.
BIO: Mi chiamo Luca Nardelli e sono un Software Architect in .Net e Node.js, ma prima di tutto sono un tecnico appassionato e curioso. ABSTRACT: In Alto Adige il sistema del traporto pubblico sta vivendo grandi cambiamenti con l'introduzione di nuove tecnologie e grandi investimenti; la transizione richiede tempo, e per continuare a monitorare la flotta in questa fase abbiamo deciso di creare un sistema di monitoraggio sviluppato in-house e basato su free software. Parleremo dell'architettura del sistema e delle sfide principali che abbiamo incontrato durante lo sviluppo e la messa in produzione.

ABSTRACT: Ever since OpenAI released ChatGPT, LLMs have been applied to the most diverse domains, from education to medicine. However, what they basically do is to look for patterns in huge amounts of text and use those patterns to guess what the next word in a string is. Having no access to the real world, LLMs are therefore great at mimicry but show important limitations when employed for critical tasks, which may affect human well-being, social justice, and access to digital services. This talk will discuss all the above issues, highlighting the risks but also the huge potential of LLMs.

Behind the scenes of our everyday Internet: the role of an IXP like MIX
ABSTRACT: Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) play an important role in the architecture of the modern Internet, but they are mostly transparent for the end users and therefore are an often unknown piece of the puzzle. This talk wants to shed some light on what happens "behind the scenes" of the daily usage of the Internet, and why a growing number of operators choose to connect to MIX, the largest IXP in Italy.
BIO: Simone Morandini studied Computer Engineering at the University of Padova, working at the VISIONS European Project. After graduating in 2004, he started cooperating with MIX for the development of traffic analysis software, and eventually joined the company in 2005. His activities are mainly focused on network traffic analysis, device configuration, peering LAN monitoring and software development. Since 2010 he also gives classes on how an IXP operates to the many students that visit MIX every year.
Architecting a 35 PB distributed parallel file system for science
ABSTRACT: Perlmutter is the newest supercomputer at Berkeley Lab, California, and features a whopping 35 PB all-flash Lustre file system. Let's dive into its architecture, showing some early performance figures and unique performance considerations, using low-level Lustre tests that achieve over 90% of the theoretical bandwidth of the SSDs, to showcase how Perlmutter achieves the performance of a burst buffer and the resilience of a scratch file system. Lastly, some performance considerations unique to an all-flash Lustre file system, along with tips on how better I/O patterns can make the most of such powerful architectures.

Truck planning: how to certify the right route
ABSTRACT: Someone says "all roads lead to Rome", but for GRUBER Logistics there is only one right route to bring our customer's goods from the loading to the unloading place. Having a predefined route, without leaving the driver to follow any route suggested by their device, is the basis to guarantee correct planning, on-time delivery, and cost control. ABSTRACT: Controlling groups of autonomous vehicles from a wireless network requires low delays, high reliability, and computing power close-by. Even though 5G cellular networks will provide these ingredients, high delays or connectivity interruptions may still lead to catastrophic consequences. We will present a novel solution to tackle these issues, based on a balanced mix of network, computing, and vehicle autonomy management. We will then discuss how to break it up, so that autonomous vehicles can bend traffic laws in case of emergency.

Building large science space projects
ABSTRACT: Publicly funded space missions are a means for states to advance technological development and acquire or maintain strategic knowledge while providing telecommunications services, earth observation, exploration, and investigation of the fundamental laws of the universe. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is the European Space Agency’s large-class science mission of the next decade and sees a substantial contribution from the Italian Space Agency. This talk will introduce the key aspects of LISA and use it as an example to explain the organization and development process of these complex international projects (including why they take so long).
BIO: Carlo Zanoni is a Mechanical Engineer and an expert in leading the development of new systems for world-class science infrastructures. He is now at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) where he oversees systems engineering activities on part of the European Space Agency’s LISA mission. He previously worked at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Germany, monitoring industrial contracts for the Extremely Large Telescope, and was a Graduate Engineer at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), in Switzerland and France, where he guided the construction of new superconducting systems for the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider. He has also worked at Stanford University, Airbus Space, and the University of Trento.
Breaking the Laws of Robotics: Attacking Industrial Robots
ABSTRACT: Industrial robots are complex cyber-physical systems used for manufacturing, and a critical component of any modern factory. These robots aren't just electromechanical devices but include complex embedded controllers, which are often interconnected with other computers in the factory network, safety systems, and to the Internet for remote monitoring and maintenance. In this scenario, industrial routers also play a key role, because they directly expose the robot's controller. Therefore, the impact of a single, simple vulnerability can grant attackers an easy entry point. The talk will discuss how remote attackers are able to attack such robots up to the point where they can alter the manufactured product, physically damage the robot, steal industry secrets, or injure humans.
BIO: Stefano Zanero received a PhD in Computer Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, where he is currently a full professor with the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria. His research focuses on malware analysis, cyber-physical security, and cybersecurity in general. Besides teaching “Computer Security” and “Digital Forensics and Cybercrime” at Politecnico, he has extensive speaking and training experience in Italy and abroad. He co-authored over 100 scientific papers and books. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society, which has named him a Distinguished Lecturer and Distinguished Contributor; he is a lifetime senior member of the ACM, which has named him a Distinguished Speaker; and has been named a Fellow of the ISSA (Information System Security Association). Stefano is also a co-founder and chairman of Secure Network, a leading cybersecurity assessment firm, and a co-founder of BankSealer, a startup in the FinTech sector that addresses fraud detection through machine learning techniques.

ABSTRACT: The falling cost of building and launching rockets, the miniaturisation of technologies, and the ambition of entrepreneurs and innovators have led to a new era for space. Otherwise known as 'new space', it has relevance to everyone and is increasingly backed by private finance. This is precisely when venture capital came into play.
BIO: Linda Mazzotti is part of Primo Space, an Italian VC fund focused on early-stage investments in space tech. After spending the first part of her academic career between Italy, Argentina, and Israel earning a degree in International Affairs, she conducted research activities in Tel Aviv on security and anti-terrorism policies, later returning to Italy to specialize in Innovation Management and support local startups.
Building large science space projects
ABSTRACT: Publicly funded space missions are a means for states to advance technological development and acquire or maintain strategic knowledge while providing telecommunications services, earth observation, exploration, and investigation of the fundamental laws of the universe. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is the European Space Agency’s large-class science mission of the next decade and sees a substantial contribution from the Italian Space Agency. This talk will introduce the key aspects of LISA and use it as an example to explain the organization and development process of these complex international projects (including why they take so long).
BIO: Carlo Zanoni is a Mechanical Engineer and an expert in leading the development of new systems for world-class science infrastructures. He is now at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) where he oversees systems engineering activities on part of the European Space Agency’s LISA mission. He previously worked at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Germany, monitoring industrial contracts for the Extremely Large Telescope, and was a Graduate Engineer at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), in Switzerland and France, where he guided the construction of new superconducting systems for the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider. He has also worked at Stanford University, Airbus Space, and the University of Trento.
Breaking the Laws of Robotics: Attacking Industrial Robots
ABSTRACT: Industrial robots are complex cyber-physical systems used for manufacturing, and a critical component of any modern factory. These robots aren't just electromechanical devices but include complex embedded controllers, which are often interconnected with other computers in the factory network, safety systems, and to the Internet for remote monitoring and maintenance. In this scenario, industrial routers also play a key role, because they directly expose the robot's controller. Therefore, the impact of a single, simple vulnerability can grant attackers an easy entry point. The talk will discuss how remote attackers are able to attack such robots up to the point where they can alter the manufactured product, physically damage the robot, steal industry secrets, or injure humans.
BIO: Stefano Zanero received a PhD in Computer Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, where he is currently a full professor with the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria. His research focuses on malware analysis, cyber-physical security, and cybersecurity in general. Besides teaching “Computer Security” and “Digital Forensics and Cybercrime” at Politecnico, he has extensive speaking and training experience in Italy and abroad. He co-authored over 100 scientific papers and books. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society, which has named him a Distinguished Lecturer and Distinguished Contributor; he is a lifetime senior member of the ACM, which has named him a Distinguished Speaker; and has been named a Fellow of the ISSA (Information System Security Association). Stefano is also a co-founder and chairman of Secure Network, a leading cybersecurity assessment firm, and a co-founder of BankSealer, a startup in the FinTech sector that addresses fraud detection through machine learning techniques.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
