Message on the importance and necessity of the Holy Ghost

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided
them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them
which had seen him after he was risen. 15And he said unto them, Go ye into all
the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16He that believeth and is
baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17And these
signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they
shall speak with new tongues; 18They shall take up serpents; and if they drink
any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they
shall recover.

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to
do and teach, 2Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the
Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

To whom also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible
proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to
the kingdom of God: 4And, being assembled together with them, commanded
them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the
Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5For John truly baptized with
water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in
one place. 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing
mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3And there
appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Who wants the Holy Ghost? Tonight is your night!
One God

The creation of Man
• God created man in his image (tselem = phantom, illusion, or
resemblance)

Tarry?
• Since the fall man waited for the opportunity to get back to the tree of life
• Jesus told his disciples to tarry
• But the promise has been given – do we still need to tarry?
• You don’t find them tarrying any place else in Acts!
Background
Why tongues?
• “Keep thy tongue from evil and thy lips from speaking guile.” Ps 34.13
• The tongue is like a razor or a sword
• The tongue can be a tool of praise or hurt
• The Psalmist in Psalm 120 asks God to deliver him of a “deceitful tongue”
• Proverbs says the tongue of the wise heals
• Proverbs 18.21 says that, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue”
• “Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.”
Prov 21.23
• James said, “If any man among you seem to be religious and bridleth not
his tongue …” his religion is in vain.
• He goes on to say that it is a little member that boasts great things, and
that “the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity… it defileth the whole body”
• James 3.8 “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of
deadly poison.”
• If God can control the “little red devil behind the pearly white gates,” then
he has control of us
Jericho
• One of the few times God tells his people to keep silent
• No confusing the matter
• No doubt being spoken
• Then the shout of victory

• At first they tried to do it their way
• Then they did it God’s way

Triumphal Entry
• Jesus was arriving in peace – fulfilling prophecy
• “If these hold their peace…”
• You have to acknowledge the King’s presence with some noise
Paul and Silas in Jail
• What did you do Paul?
• Well as long as we are here – let’s praise God
• The prison was shaken when they made some noise
• Note: “…we are all here…” – It made a difference in someone else’s life

3. Instruction
God is our father – he gives good gifts
Don’t beg or plead
Confess – Repent – Praise
Tell him who He is and what He means to you
Ps 63 “Oh God, thou art my God…”
He is the one true and living God
He is your provider
He is your help
He is a friend that …
He is the “I AM”
He is our Judge and Advocate
They only tarried once (tarry means set)
After 40 days he told them to wait at Jerusalem
Not for waiting sake – for the day of Pentecost (exactly 7 weeks plus 1 day
past the Passover) (8 the number of new beginnings)
Why wait? Get it now!
Holy Ghost = Sacred current of Air (from pneo = to breathe)
Nothing to be scared of
God himself coming into your life
Once again breathing in you the breath of life
Just like mouth to mouth – the kiss of life
Why wait? Get it now!
Open up – tell him what he means to you (6 steps to new life)
Expect
Believe
Confess
Accept
Surrender
Thanksgiving
Then like David – 6 steps and Praise!
Give God the control
Remember if he can control the tongue he can control you
Just like the bit in a horses mouth

Don’t let anything hold you back

4. Message to Laodecia “I stand at the door, and knock…” If he’s knocking he’s not
inside! Why don’t you let him in?
Follow the steps: Expect, Believe, Confess, Accept, Surrender, and
Thanksgiving. Then Praise Him!
Let him give you the “Kiss of Life.”
Come up saying, “Tonight is my night, I’m not waiting any longer!”
