2. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is attempts to analyze and
understand the life and works of Dr. Jose Rizal
in relation to Filipino nationalism. It will focus
on historicizing the legacies of Rizal which
includes critical issues and controversies in his
life and heroism. This course closes with the
discussion on the effects of Jose Rizal’s work to
Philippine social reality.
3. I. INTRODUCTION TO RIZAL STUDIES
It is important to study the life of Jose Rizal because of his input
towards the independence of Philippines.
He chose to fight for his country through knowledge and the
power of letters.
By studying the lives of heroes such as Rizal, we are supposed to
become more aware of the ideals that our country is founded
upon.
4. RIZAL LAW leosel lou
1956 Claro M. Recto filed a Bill called the Rizal Bill to instill
heroism to the Filipino youth.
For college and university to study the Life and Works of Dr. Jose
Rizal.
June 12, 1956; Republic Act. 1425 as
Rizal Law came into effect.
5. Republic Act 1425 RIZAL LAW

Also known as Rizal Law was approved on June 12, 1956 is an act of
mandating all public and private institutions including state colleges and
universities to include the Dr. Jose Rizal’s life, works, and writings as a
course across programs.
It was written by Sen. Jose P. Laurel with a comprised version of House Bill
no. 5561.
Came out on April 19, 1956 in the House of Representatives and Senate Bill
no. 428.
April 3, 1956 by then Committee on Education, led by Cong. Jacobo
Gonzales and Sen. Claro Recto known as Noli-Fili Bill.
6. IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING RIZAL
To recognize the importance of Rizal's ideals and teachings in
relation to present conditions in the society.
To encourage the application of such ideals in current social and
personal problems and issues.
To develop an appreciation and deeper understanding of all that
Rizal fought and died for.
7. RIZAL AND THE FILIPINO NATION
Rizal wanted independence for the Philippines only as a gradual
process, not in one fell swoop.
His novels awakened Philippine nationalism.
His essays and editorials, centered on individual rights and
freedom, specifically for the Filipino people.
As part of his reforms, he even called for the inclusion of
the Philippines to become a province of Spain.
