he Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series Standard, OHSAS 18001 is the worldwide recognized system that a company can use to manage the safety, health and welfare of their employees and others who may be on their site or under their control from time to time such as contractors, in to complete some machine servicing, and visitors, calling in for a meeting or similar activity.

1. Why OHSAS 18001 Certification?
The Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series Standard, OHSAS 18001 is the
worldwide recognized system that a company can use to manage the safety, health and

2. ● It has often been said that we don’t miss the water until the well runs dry and similarly
if there is an accident and the proper controls are not in place, we will forever regret
not having carried out the risk assessment and installed the controls: the risk
assessment wasn’t missed until the fatality or serious injury occurred.
● One hardly needs to be reminded one year on, of the collapse of the 8 storey garment
factory in Bangladesh (Rana Plaza) killing 1135 workers and injuring 2500 others,
simply because the operators/owners did not take their responsibilities in relation to
the health and safety of their employees, contractors, sub-contractors, seriously.
● It is reported in the New York Times that retailers such as ASDA, Walmart, Gap and
Children’s Place have set aside funds for the victims’ families.
● Great, but too little too late. What if these large retailers and corporate entities had
used proper supplier approval processes, insisting that employees involved in the
manufacture of their products be properly treated, this disaster could have been
prevented.

3. OHSAS, properly implemented will:
● Encourage employees to report accidents, incidents, near-misses no matter how
insignificant these may appear. The stats tell us: for every 600 near misses and
minor injuries, one fatality occurs
● Enhance communication throughout the organisation
● Demonstrate to enforcement agencies that the organisation has taken
precautions that are reasonably practicable, to prevent injury and ill-health
amongst the workforce
● Demonstrate to enforcement agencies that the organisation has taken actions to
take account of reasonably foreseeable threats to the health, safety and

4. ● Prevent injury and ill-health from identified workplace threats
● Plan for escapes from threats posed by fires, floods and hurricanes
● Drive the organisation to keep up-to-date with H&S best practice, including
changes in the law
● Involve senior management and employees
● Involve all stakeholders
● Facilitate a framework for obtaining EL and PL insurance premiums reduction
● Reduce employee absenteeism, specifically where related to workplace injuries
● Promote TLC within the organisation
