Has your web form conversion rate hit a wall? Are users not receiving confirmation e-mails, getting pestered with password or data format warnings *after* they finish entering their information, or bailing after being asked the same questions multiple ways? Find out why not enough people are filling out your web forms, and learn suggestions of A/B tests you can try to help encourage more people to interact.
Developers: Why Care About the User? (2017)Andrew Malek
As developers, we deal with technologies, frameworks, and data, making it very easy to forget that what we create is meant for real people to use.
While designers and UI specialists should handle most decisions about how a product or service looks and feels, we should all be on the same page to make better solutions. Whether we are building an interface for a desktop website, mobile application, or chatbot, what are some basic design concepts that we as developers can pick up, allowing us to be on the same page with designers and product owners during product meetings and discussions?

Deck for my talk "How To 10X Your Conversion Fundamentals of Usability & Optimisation" from the Secret Sauce conference in London on 23 September, 2015.
The whole point of a good GUI (Graphical User Interface) is being able to understand what is going on without reading every single detail. That is why we prefer big red crosses to say "Don't do that you oaf!" instead of a line of text that says "I think you may want to reconsider your options."
Conversion rate optimization is a powerful tactic to get more value from your visitors, but there's a lot of mythology out there about what really works and doesn't. CRO is about more than testing button colors, headlines, photos, or videos.
Learn more about the big picture, and what truly moves the needle, with Rand Fishkin himself.

Advanced Error Handling Strategies for ColdFusion Mary Jo Sminkey
A number of years ago I presented a talk at cfObjective on building an advanced, custom CF error handler. This talk will go above and beyond that, covering not just CF but JS/Ajax and SQL Server error logging and strategies for debugging errors on live sites. Developers should come away from this talk with lots of ideas for both custom code they can add to their sites as well a variety of open source and 3rd party solutions for error logging and use site analytics to track and fix issues on their live sites. Blog articles expanding on the information presented in this talk will also be published concurrent with the presentation at coldfusionmuse.com.

Cognitive Biases and the User ExperienceAndrew Malek
According to Wikipedia, cognitive biases cause individuals to 'create their own "subjective social reality" from their perception of the input.' Some of these allow us to take shortcuts when processing information... with mixed results.
Though not all confirmation biases can be neatly labeled "good" or "bad", as we increase our recognition of when these occur, the more we can determine how they affect our decision-making. Learn more about biases such as confirmation bias, false consensus effect, framing bias, halo effect, and Parkinson's Law of triviality (the bicycle shed effect). These can affect usability testing, user research, presenting research findings, and UX design.
Is This a Button? A Question Your Users Should Never Ask.Andrew Malek
Buttons are a primary way people interact with our websites and apps, but recent design trends have caused confusion over what actually is a button and what is static text or imagery. Perhaps you’re in QA and want to increase the quality of an app, a designer looking for usability tips, or a developer who normally thinks nothing more about a button other than instantiating one and placing it in a layout. Either way, learn about ideas you can test to possibly increase your app or website’s usage, guiding people to lead-generation or checkout activities. Topics include color theory, floating buttons, Fitts’s Law, microinteractions, and perceived performance.
The design behind adding interactivity to an application or website seems trivial; download a free icon collection from sites such as Flaticon, Font Awesome, or iconmonstr, pick an appropriate icon, and add the image to your work. However, should there be more to this process, especially if you are concerned about people understanding how to use what you develop? Learn why the "5-second rule" doesn't apply just to picking food off the floor, how the wrong icon can show cultural insensitivity, why the manner icons are placed in a website or app may be as important as the images themselves, and how to perform icon usability tests. You may be surprised which icons users find to be generally instantly recognizable as to what functions they relate, and which others not so much.

Responsive Design and Development "Gotchas"Andrew Malek
This session explores why choosing a good responsive framework, while assisting in development and ensuring a consistent look-and-feel, is just one piece of the much larger process of creating a truly engaging website or web application. Topics include why using the latest swiping motion du jour may not immediately make sense to all users, how a site's layout and content must truly be thought of as an architecture project to get the most "bang for the buck", and what problems that interactivity in the form of form entry can result in driving potential users and customers away, never to be seen again.
Any of these happen to you?
* Tasked to develop a user interface with an incomplete design spec, so had to make guesses such as where to position on-screen elements?
* Worked on a small team without a full-time designer, and requested to “just put a screen together for a demo”?
* Been asked to consult with a user interface designer, but don’t know what types of questions to pose?
Nowadays, everyone wants attractive, easy-to-use interfaces, so if you’re more comfortable sifting through Java or C# code than OmniGraffle or Visio mockups, learn about topics that can assist in creating more usable desktop applications, mobile apps, and websites. This talk provides easy-to-implement hints that can improve even a bad or “so-so” user interface. Areas of focus include the need for consistency; “negative space”; location, location, location (it’s crucial in screen real-estate, too!); contrasting colors; and the importance of action verbs.

Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.
Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

Why People Don’t Fill Out Forms?
▪ Too long
▪ Too hard to determine what must be entered
▪ Too hard to determine how to enter information
–“Don’t Make MeThink!”
▪ Don’t display correctly everywhere
9. @malekontheweb
A/B Testing
▪ Calculate conversion rate percentage between
control and experiment
▪ Options include:
–Button colors
–Form instruction wording
–Number of form fields
–Order of form fields
10. @malekontheweb
A/B Testing Considerations
▪ Results can be skewed
–Demographics
–Page speed
–Browser / code issues
–Unexpected traffic sources
▪ Can end test too soon if results prove conclusion
too early
11. @malekontheweb
Testing Options – Open Source
▪ Alephbet - https://github.com/Alephbet/alephbet
–JavaScript framework with Google Analytics support
▪ PlanOut - https://github.com/facebook/planout

“People have trouble understanding required and optional
signals … common practice to use a red asterisk ‘*’ … that
didn’t work well enough, even in a survey of UX
professionals”
16. @malekontheweb
‘Asterisk as Required’ Issues
▪ Small asterisk can be easily overlooked
▪ Color-blind? Red asterisk may not stand out
▪ Some argue opposite - only labeling fields as
optional
–Users may skip all fields not marked as required
–http://uxmovement.com/forms/why-users-fill-out-
less-if-you-mark-required-fields/
17. @malekontheweb
“The worst problem about Reset is that users click the button by
mistake when they wanted to click Submit …all your work is gone!”
“The extra choice requires extra thinking…”
https://www.nngroup.com/articles/reset-and-cancel-buttons/
18. @malekontheweb
Other Issues with Reset Button
▪ “Reset”, “Clear”, etc. adds clutter
▪ If “Clear” needed, show confirmation dialog
▪ Main CTA button should stand out
▪ “Submit” not clear – use verb or phrase
–“Checkout”, “Join Now!”, “Send Comment”, “Post
Message”, “Download”, “Ask Question”
19. @malekontheweb
▪ Is the SPAM block needed?
▪ Too confusing?

▪ Reverse geocode lat / long to location
–https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/

▪ Requires user giving share permission
▪ Location can be faked…

Common Form Issue – Phone Numbers
▪ What you want:
–1234567890
▪ What you get:
–123-456-7890
–(123) 456-7890
–123.456.7890
–(123)-456-7890
–….etc
32. @malekontheweb
Other Split Phone Number Issues
▪ User could use “Next” and “Previous” buttons on
mobile phone keyboard to switch between parts
–Few did in Baymard Institute e-commerce study
▪ Split fields make users question what is required if
one part of multi-part input is labeled “Required”
single-input-fields
33. @malekontheweb
What Else Could Be Split?
▪ Name
▪ ZIP Code
▪ Birthdate (some debate on this one)
▪ Address (house number and street fields)
37. @malekontheweb
Form Length and Conversions
▪ Reducing contact form from 11 to 4 fields caused
120% conversion
▪ Expedia removed one field - $12million profit
▪ Asking for age caused a 3% dip in conversions
–http://unbounce.com/conversion-rate-
optimization/how-to-optimize-contact-forms/
▪ Ask only what is needed and NO MORE!
39. @malekontheweb
Validate Email Before User Submits
▪ mailcheck.js – can suggest common domains if
user misspells them
–https://github.com/mailcheck/mailcheck
▪ Regular expression validation
–http://stackoverflow.com/questions/46155/
▪ Could do MX record validation, but beware DoS
–https://www.npmjs.com/package/legit
42. @malekontheweb
However...
▪ “[S]trict password rules can cause an 18.75%
checkout abandonment rate among existing
account users as they try to sign in”
–Baymard Institute
–http://baymard.com/blog/password-requirements-
and-password-reset
▪ You’ll have to decide…
47. @malekontheweb
What can we learn?
▪More descriptive error messages inside
the form, not just above or below
▪Test on multiple devices
48. @malekontheweb
Inline Validation is Good
▪ Can see errors at-a-glance while typing
▪ No waiting for slow form submission
▪ Error message should change as user alters field
▪ Yet 40% of “major” e-commerce sites lack this
–http://baymard.com/blog/inline-form-validation
(9/27/2016)
▪ …but can one go too far?

Showing Error Messages Prematurely
▪ Showing errors before user fills out fields
▪ Clutters up form
▪ Confusing and distracting
▪ Users feel “scolded”, especially with messages in
red text or ALL CAPS
51. @malekontheweb
How Not to Show Errors Too Early
▪ Show errors after user leaves a field (JavaScript ‘blur’)
▪ Confirmation fields - show errors after user leaves
both fields, and on form submit if user forgets field
▪ OK to show suggestions at first for complicated fields
(password restrictions, max field length, etc.)
–http://baymard.com/blog/inline-form-validation
53. @malekontheweb
Pros: Inline Placeholders as Labels
▪ Fit more fields on small mobile screens
▪ Could increase conversions?
–Form appears smaller
–Screen less cluttered
–User might not swipe through longer form
54. @malekontheweb
Cons: Inline Placeholders as Labels
▪ As user fills out form, instruction label disappears
–In a study, users often “deleted their entire input just to see
the label again”
▪ Inline validation shows, but label name gone
–http://ux.stackexchange.com/questions/9220/
–http://baymard.com/blog/mobile-forms-avoid-inline-labels
▪ “The opposite of helpful”

55. @malekontheweb
Cons(2): Inline Placeholders as Labels
▪ People might confuse placeholder text as a filled-
out field and ignore it
–https://www.nngroup.com/articles/form-design-
placeholders/
▪ Light-gray placeholder text may be hard to see
–Not enough color contrast with background
–Accessibility issues
56. @malekontheweb
Could These Inline Placeholders Work?
▪ Some argue if yes – if very few form fields
–i.e. just username and password
▪ Or – what if placeholder labels don’t completely
disappear…

Redundant Placeholder as Label
▪ Could be useful to draw attention?
▪ Or does it clutter the form with redundancy?
▪ Previously mentioned placeholder issues…
63. @malekontheweb
