Why Do I Have to Change?
bymaggieowens | on December 29, 2012

                                                                                     Change
There was a time about 23 years ago when I hated that word change.

Things were going on in my life where I just knew that if others would change their ways, that my life would
be fine. Why couldn’t everyone just see that?

Then I started going to a psycologist and to Al-Anon. And I started hearing about how other’s don’t need to
change but that my behavior and attitude needs to change. I thought “WHAT?”. That made no sense to me at
all.

Luckily, over 5 1/2 years of therapy and 10 years of Al-Anon, I was lucky enough to learn that what they were
all telling me was right.
I can do nothing to make the nagativity in others change or make their behavior change. But what I can change
is my attitude which will make my world change. For someone like me (stubborn), that was not an easy task.
And there are times today in my life, I have to go back to the things I learned those many years ago.

I live in a situation (not the same one as back then) today, where I am surrounded by negativity on a daily
basis. For a long time I allowed myself to go to that level right along with them. One day I finally realized that
I have to go back to what I learned from my situation many years ago.

There are time I have to say the Serenity Prayer over and over and over. It was explained to me this way one
time and I say it this way to myself to remind myself:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
(other people)
The courage to change the things I can
(me, myself, and I)
And the wisdom to know the difference

Today, I no longer hate the word change. By letting go of trying to control others and control situations, I feel
much more free. I can allow myself to see the good in people even if they are not doing the things I think they
should.

This year I can honestly say that by remembering that I do not have control over others, I was able to enjoy the
holidays.

This is something I have to work on on a daily basis. Without the help of God and all my friends on facebook
and my friends at church, I would be in big, big trouble.

One thing that also helps me to change myself is blogging on this platform. I am surrounded by really, really
awesome positive people. Do something good for yourself today and change your life for the positive. Watch
the video in this post and sign up. $25 to start a blogging system that changes my life every day.

God Bless,
