Harriet Tubman had to make many difficult decisions on her journey to freedom. She chose to leave her family and escape slavery alone at night rather than risk being captured. Once free, she struggled with whether to stay in the North or return to the South to rescue her family still in slavery, eventually choosing to return despite the danger and large reward for her capture. She also insisted that those she helped rescue continue on without changing their minds to prevent exposing the underground railroad routes.
