John Perry Barlow helped popularize the term "cyberspace" and founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 1990 to defend liberty in cyberspace. As vice chairman of the EFF, Barlow wrote the Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace to establish cyberspace as a place separate from physical geography and territorial governments. The EFF seeks to build legal protections for the internet and mediate conflicts that arise at the border of cyberspace and the physical world.
