Which is My
    Good Leg?
    Cultural Communication of
    Persons with Disabilities.

    -Amber Rosbottom-

2

What is the article about?
 The focus of the article is communication
 between non disabled persons and
 disabled persons as intercultural
communication. The article goes on to
describe certain situations people are in
everyday with disabled persons and how
 to treat them.
3

Method
 One thing that is interesting about the
article is that people were chosen to
“play” the role of a disabled person, so I
don’t really find that to be accurate
  information.
 It also states that researchers tend to talk
about the disabled and not with them.
4

Findings and their significance
 Thefirst example shows that disabled
person are spoken about and not to .
 The couple is out to dinner and the waiter
asks the non disabled person what her
companion will have for dinner and proceeds
to garnish her with the check at the end of
        the meal.
 The disabled person is very capable
of making his own decisions and can
        speak for himself.
5

More findings…
 On page 210 it states that many non
 disabled people hold stereotypes of
 people from the disabled culture.
 Such as that they are socially introverted,
           emotionally unstable, depressed, and easily
           offended.
6

Type of Approach
Ithink this article used the interpretive
 approach
      It
        showed observations by participants
      Was objective
      Described behavior
7

Significant quotes
 “A lot of people always come up and ask
can they push my wheelchair. And, I can
do it myself. They were invading my
  space, concentration, doing what I
wanted to do, which I enjoy doing.”
 “Don’t touch the wheelchair. And then
she just looked at me like I’d slapped her I
  n the face.”
8

Quotes continued…
 Thesequotes are significant because they
shows that Kim (the person in the
wheelchair) wants to be treated like a
 normal non disabled person. Non
disabled people have to learn how to go
about their everyday lives on their own,
they don’t expect or want everyone to
 feel obligated to help them.
9

Questions?
 Ifyou were disabled, what would be the
one thing that you would want non-
  disabled people to know?

 Do you have any personal experiences
that you feel would have been helpful to
  this research?
10
