Following demonetization, several individuals and organizations started making use of the data available to them, or the data they could access, to explain trends and show truths from the ground. James Wilson made one such effort. He accessed data from government websites and analyzed it to explain issues surrounding demonetization. Through this talk, James explains what is the scope for individuals and collectives to access public data in payments, where does it exist and how best to analyze and disseminate this data.

Dear Investors,
The month of July has seen the heavens literally open their doors and shower their blessings on us. After a late start in June, the monsoon picked up
smartly and the country as a whole received abundant rainfall, bringing cheer to one and all and definitely a sense of relief. The same good cheer
seems to have percolated to the global equity markets as well. Having brushed off the Brexit issue, markets have continued their upward move
relentlessly through the month of July. The US benchmark index, the S&P 500 hit a new lifetime high earlier in the month on the back of good jobs
data and an optimistic view of growth in the US economy. Not wanting to be left out in any way, the Nifty set a new 52-week high and the Sensex
scaled 28,000.
The quarterly results have been a mixed bag so far. While there have been more hits than misses, the IT sector as a whole and some pharma
companies have been the major pockets of underperformance. Most of the private sector retail banks and NBFCs have shown a stellar performance,
while growth in public sector banks was stagnant due to liquidity and NPA issues. In the consumer space, lower costs have added to the profits of
several companies, but revenue growth and volume growth were disappointing. There is hope that these will see a significant pick up in the second
half of the financial year once the benefits of the 7th Pay Commission and a good monsoon kick in.

A research project on devaluation of currency in Pakistan. Pakistan being a developing country, its economy gets affected by the rise and fall of Pakistani currency against dollar. During the time of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in power dollar was stable for 60 rupee. When the government changed Pakistani currency immediately fell seven rupee against dollar. Since then Pakistani currency is falling and nowadays the value is 104 and the speculation is that it will keep on falling. The devaluation of currency has a direct impact on local Pakistan traders. Foreign trade such as eatable oil, raw materials, petroleum and electronics gets expensive. This creates problems for the traders. Pakistan imports 80 percent of petroleum for its consumption. According to the Former Finance Minister Dr. Salman Shah, Pakistan spends 13 billion dollar on imports of crude oil and eatable oil. This provides a boost for domestic demands as exports become cheaper and more competitive to foreign buyers. Higher level of exports should lead to an improvement in the current account deficit. This was important in the case of the UK who had a large current account deficit of over 3% of GDP in 2008. Higher exports and aggregate demand can lead to higher rates of economic growth. Deficit financing, economic instability and money supply are the factors that influence our independent variable.

•Earnings Data for 8 core industries including mining, infrastructure and electricity was received which indicated a growth by 5.2% which augers well. However, one needs to see if this is a onetime occurrence or will it continue. Also, since rainfall was moderate, by the end of July, rural consumption is expected to be strong. To that extent, GDP is likely to grow anywhere between 7.5-8% this year. The government’s earlier projections in the budget carry an upward bias.

ASIAN CURRENCIES STILL ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW
Non-Japan Asia (NJA) currencies have weakened in the past four weeks, led by sharp falls in the INR, THB and IDR (Figure 1). Rising oil prices and tepid exports are amongst the common factors behind this currency weakness.
But precedent suggests that outside of periods of major financial shocks, these bouts of currency depreciation are reasonably shallow and short-lived and typically followed by similarly shallow and short-lived bouts of currency appreciation (Figure 2). It’s a similar picture for the CNY (Figure 3).
This pattern of mean-reversion reflects in part the ebbs and flows of foreign FX flows and seasonality of current account flows. Importantly, it also reflects NJA central banks’ willingness and ability to smooth the path of their currencies via FX (and verbal) intervention. They have to balance the competitiveness of their currencies and large export sectors on the one hand with imported inflation and the cost of servicing foreign-currency denominated debt on the other.

ASIAN CURRENCIES STILL ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW
Non-Japan Asia (NJA) currencies have weakened in the past four weeks, led by sharp falls in the INR, THB and IDR (Figure 1). Rising oil prices and tepid exports are amongst the common factors behind this currency weakness.
But precedent suggests that outside of periods of major financial shocks, these bouts of currency depreciation are reasonably shallow and short-lived and typically followed by similarly shallow and short-lived bouts of currency appreciation (Figure 2). It’s a similar picture for the CNY (Figure 3).
This pattern of mean-reversion reflects in part the ebbs and flows of foreign FX flows and seasonality of current account flows. Importantly, it also reflects NJA central banks’ willingness and ability to smooth the path of their currencies via FX (and verbal) intervention. They have to balance the competitiveness of their currencies and large export sectors on the one hand with imported inflation and the cost of servicing foreign-currency denominated debt on the other.

The Modi government’s demonetisation move has had an impact on several sectors, especially real estate. How could
retail be far behind? Given Indian’s propensity to deal in cash, especially when shopping in luxury malls and high streets, retail
will see the short-term impact on sales. The media has already reported how retail sales have dwindled in the immediate aftermath
of the government’s announcement, and how millions of new users are registering on portals offering digital payment services.
The study was conducted by meeting respondents personally and by generating the questionnaire online by means of a Google
spreadsheet, where different retailers of different products were interviewed.
Through this study findings, I could learn that demonetisation negatively affected the middle class the most, followed by the
lower and higher class retail business firms. Surprisingly, the higher class of retail firms was not affected much due to their
dependence on plastic money. In fact, they were also to some extent positively affected as they had many customers seeking them
to dispose of their illegally stored currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000.
However, demonetization seems to have largely achieved the objective of its introduction in India, as would the findings of the
study reveal.

As of December 28, official sources said that the Income Tax department detected over 4,172 crore of un-disclosed income and seized new notes worth 105 crore as part of its country-wide operations. The department carried out a total of 983 search, survey and enquiry operations
under the provisions of the Income Tax Act and has issued 5,027 notices to various entities on charges of tax evasion and hawala-like dealings. The department also seized cash and
jewellery worth over 549 crore out of which the new currency seized (majority of them 2000 notes) is valued at about 105 crore. The department also referred a total of 477 cases to
other agencies like the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to probe other financial crimes like money laundering, disproportionate assets and corruption.

Demonetisation and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) are the two major headwinds that held back India's economic growth last year, former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has said, asserting that the current seven per cent growth rate is not enough to meet the country's needs.

Demonetization negatively impacted many vendors in India. Due to the removal of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes, 50% of vendors did not have bank accounts and 30% only had accounts in their home towns, making exchanging the old notes difficult. While some opened accounts through a government program, 80% of vendors preferred saving cash at home rather than depositing in banks. A majority (50-85%) of vendors faced difficulties withdrawing money from ATMs and using digital payments. The demonetization motivated increased cashless transactions long-term but created significant problems for many unorganized sector workers in the short-term.
