When Josep was young, his family struggled financially and had to live with other families after moving to the village when he was 5 months old. He started working at age 12 and had various jobs like being a baker and slaughtering pigs before opening a shop with his brother. During the civil war from 1936-1939, food was scarce. Josep also completed mandatory military service for 18 months when he was 21, which he said was not too difficult. He married his wife Adelina in 1960 and they had two children together.
