WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, who both previously worked at Yahoo for many years. WhatsApp has grown tremendously in the past 5 years from a simple app idea to serving over 400 million users worldwide, adding over 1 million new users per day. In 2014, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion to expand their messaging services.
