1. Welcome to ENG 111 (with CJC 212) This class is the result of an experiment. Kim Hammett and I wanted to find a way to make ENG 111 feasible for 8 weeks and relevant to CJ folks. You will need to be co-registered with CJC 212 to continue in this course. If you aren’t, let’s talk (unless you’ve talked w/ Ms. Hammett already and have the Ethics book).

2. How this class works Ms. Hammett will not need to see the work you do in this class. Readings will come from your ethics text, from the modules, links and from Keys for Writers. Each module will contain all the info required for that section. There are three modules in all.

3. How this class works…cont. For each module, you will need to: Read all links and text assignments. Read the lecture (in module) Review the task list (in module). Do related discussions (discussion page; note which discussions go with each module) Keep an eye on due dates for your formal assignments.

4. Online learning requires: Motivation and discipline (procrastinators may need to consider a different learning format) A fairly new computer with at least Office 2003, though 2007 gives a lot of flexibility (You may want to upgrade, but this is not required). If you don’t have Office 2003, you can use Word Perfect or Works, but you must save your files as .rtf or .doc or I can’t read them. High speed internet. If you have dial-up, online learning is a miserable experience. Minimal computer skills (know how to browse for and attach a file; how to save as a different format; how to send an email., etc.)

5. Keys for success Don’t procrastinate and fall behind. Do the reading.Your direct use of course material is the only way I’ll know you have been studying.

6. Keys for success continued Ask for help when you need it. I am very accessible. You can: Email through webct. I check all day during the week and at least once a day on weekends. Hint: I have between 4,000 and 6,000 emails in webct every semester. Please don’t assume I remember what our last email was about! My memory is BAD! Remind me. Call my office at 704.991.0307. 7. Where to find help? Under the Modules and Help info icon, you will find links to a variety of help. Link there to find password info, help w/ documentation and technical help (i.e. with WebCT). I’m glad to help with things that confuse you, but many of your technical issues are covered in simple learning objects on this page. Check here first. 8. Keys for success continued Go above and beyond the minimum. The minimum expectation means “average.” That’s a C. If you want better than that, turn in above average work. Writing should be free of grammatical/mechanical issues, so have someone help you proofread. Be sure your work is on time. Mentally, make Mondays your due date so you’ll have some time to make changes if necessary by 8 a.m. Tuesdays (Tuesdays at 8 a.m. are always the due date/time unless I have to make a change).

9. About plagiarism On the “Start here: course info” page (link from the homepage), you’ll find a plagiarism link. Start there. Read about plagiarism, and link to the “Quiz.” Do this first. I want to make sure you know what plagiarism and academic dishonesty involves. Don’t fall into the plagiarism trap. It simply is NOT worth the risk.

15. Discussions The discussion icon (from home page or on course menu on left) links to material covered in the modules. The final four discussions link to the discussion questions (DQs) from the CJC 212 class. Please compose your response to my prompts with your name in the subject line. Please respond to others in the class as directed. Discussions are a large part of your grade, so do a great job on these.

16. Assignments These are your most formal papers. Link via the Module page or via the assignment link on the course menu on the left. Please upload your assignments here in either .doc or .rtf format. If you don’t know how to do this, link to webct help on the help page.

17. My Grades You can find your grades one of two ways. You can link to MyGrades or you can find them under the assignment tool. Be sure to hyperlink under the assignments to see your comments. You will never receive a grade without explanation.

18. Time to get started! It usually takes two weeks to get comfortable with WebCT. If you’re new, hang in there. Ask questions and let me know if you’re having trouble. Have a great semester!
