Logging while drilling (LWD) involves gathering down-hole data during drilling operations without removing the drill pipe from the well. LWD provides advantages like detecting target zones, accurate gamma measurements, and proper drilling orientation to aid in accurate drilling. Initial attempts at LWD began in the 1920s using techniques like mud pulse and electromagnetics, with more successful systems developing in later decades like a working directional and resistivity system in the 1960s.
