WHAT IS LWD?
Logging while drilling is a general term to
describe systems and techniques for
gathering down-hole data while drilling
without the requirement to remove drill pipe
from the well.
ADVANTAGES OF LOGGING WHILE DRILLING
One of the best ways to achieve accurate
drilling is through logging while drilling
(LWD). The advantages of logging while
drilling include target zone detections,
accurate gamma measurements, and
proper drilling orientation. When it comes to
long-reach horizontal wellbores in
unconventional reservoirs, data from LWD
tools aid drilling to guide the drill bit
location, allowing clear-cut placement and
targeting.
HISTORY
Initial attempts to provide M/LWD date
back to the 1920s, and attempts were
made prior to WW2 with Mud Pulse, Wired
Pipe, Acoustic and Electromagnetics. JJ
Arps produced a working directional and
resistivity system in the 1960s.
