Forces cause objects to accelerate by changing their speed or direction of motion. A force can be applied to speed an object up, slow it down, or cause it to change direction as when turning a corner. Free body diagrams are drawings used to represent the different forces acting on an object, such as a football, showing the direction of each force as it is thrown, kicked, or tackled.
