Whalers killed whales for their meat and oil, which they used for food and lighting before 1964. They used harpoons attached to ropes to hunt whales from boats. While whaling was economically viable, overhunting led to 7 of 13 whale species becoming endangered, so most whaling ended by 1964 to protect the species.
