Western Sahara has been listed as a Non-Self-Governing Territory by the United Nations since 1963. The region has a population of around 584,000 people and covers an area of 266,000 square kilometers. While Spain was previously the administering power, it ended its administration in 1976. The United Nations General Assembly adopts an annual resolution on Western Sahara and maintains a peacekeeping mission in the region called MINURSO.
