C’est dans l’Allemagne de l’après Guerre, celle de la République de Weimar que le mouvement Bauhaus prend racine.
En 1919, le Belge Henry van de Veld et l’Allemand Walter Gropius prennent l’initiative de réunir l’école des Arts Décoratifs et l’académie des Beaux-Arts en une seule institution : la Staatliches Bauhaus
Cette nouvelle structure expérimentale vise à fusionner art et technique dans un seul et unique objectif humaniste de (re)construction.
