A short guide for new students.

1. A Short Welcome Guide*
For New LBS Students
* This guide is not an official Lauder Business School publication. It’s been written by LBS students.

2. Moving to a new place is an exciting and
stressful experience. It takes a little while to
settle in and learn the ins and outs of your
new city.
This short guide will hopefully save you a lot
of time and money.

3. We wrote this guide in order to make your
transition as easy as possible.

4. Step One - “Meldezettel”!
• A Medldezettle is your official Austrian residence registration (not your
student permit). You will need this document for just about everything.
• Register at the Magistrat on Gatterburggasse 12 for dormitory residents, or
at the magistrat in charge of the district you will live in.
Required Documents:
1. Passport.
2. A form signed by Ms. Dagmar Kreuzer for dormitory residents or by the
landlord for those renting an apartment.
Tip: Go early in the morning to avoid long lines. Magistats are also only open
early in the day.

5. Step Two- Bank Account!
• Make an appointment to open a bank account at Bank Austria. Dorm
residence should go to the one on Döblinger Hauptstrasse closest to
Pyrkergasse. Other students should find one close to their flat.
Required documents:
1. Certificate of enrolment
2. Passport
3. Meldezettel (See step one)

6. Step Three- Get a SimCard!
• A local Simcard will make your life easier!
• You can either get a contract for 2 years or get a monthly pre paid
Simcard.
• The most popular companies are: T mobile and Drei. LBS also has a
group plan, but you can probably do better on your own.
Tip: Insist on getting clear answers and exact details! If you are not
careful you will waste a lot of money for stupid misunderstandings;
phone companies love that!

7. Step Four- Public Transportation!
• Buy a semester/yearly ticket. It will save you heaps of money and lots of headache.
• For students under 26, go to Erdberg U3 station and get a student identification card. This card allows
you to buy the student tickets.
Required Documents:
1. Passport
2. Certificate of enrollment
3. Photo (same size as in your passport)
4. Student Form (you get the form there)
5. Banking details
TIPS:
1) If you register your Meldezettel before September 1st, the semester card will cost 75 EUR instead of
150 EUR if you register one day later.
2) the fine for riding the transportation system without a ticket is 100 EUR, payable on the spot.
3) If you are 26 or older, you can buy a year pass, which you can cancel any time for around 32 Euro
per month. Make sure you select the ‘pay monthly’ option.

8. Step Five- Insurance!
• After you have a bank account!! Go to the WGKK office on Heiligenstädter Straße 31,
adjacent to the Spittelau Ubahn station.
• You can either choose between automatic monthly withdrawals or to pay monthly by
submitting payments through the bank.
Required Documents :
1. Passport
2. Meldezettel
3. Certificate of enrollment
4. Student Form- will be available at the WGKK office.
TIPS: 1) If you insurance is not paid on time each month, it can be cancelled and you
cannot re-enroll for 6 months. 2) You need proof of insurance to get your Austrian
student residence permit.

9. Step Six- Confirmation of Studies!
After paying your tuition fee and student union fee, go to Ms. Dem and
ask for a confirmation of studies, she will know which document to
give you.
TIP: Ms. Dem will only issue your confirmation of studies after your
tuition and student union fees clear the bank transfer. Expect this to
take 2-3 days.

10. Step Seven- Drink Some Beer!
Relax! You are doing well!
Check out the pub “Fischer Bräu“ on Billrothstrasse 17. They have great
locally brewed beer!

11. Step Eight- Go to MA 35 for your Student
Residence Permit!
• After having the insurance you can go to MA 35 on Dresdnerstrasse 93 to
apply for your Austrian student residence permit (visa). You must arrive
before 12pm or you cannot be processed that day.
Prepare yourself for long lines and pure bureaucracy! Come early and
don’t have anything big planned for that day! Bring a book or something
else to do as lineups can be up to 4 hours. CHECK YOUR DOCUMENTS so
that you don’t have to come back another day! The line numbers at MA35
don’t go in numerical order.

12. Required Documents for MA 35:
1. Passport+ 1 copy of your passport+ a photo
2. Meldezettel+ 1 copy
3. Insurance confirmation+ 1 copy
4. Bank account information
5. Confirmation of studies+ 1 copy
6. A letter of confirmation of your stay in the dormitory+ 1 copy or proof of
sufficient funds if you live outside of the dorms.
7. Proof of a clean police record issued by police in your home country.
8. Application form (ask in the Lauder Business School office where to get it from).
9. At least 120-180 Euro.
Tip: 1) Bring EVERY document you have received from the Lauder Business School
and the different offices here. You never know if you’ll need it! 2) Some documents
from your home country must be notarized, certified, legalized, apostilled , and
only then can be submitted. Make sure to do this in your home country.

• Those looking to live outside the LBS dorms will likely need a Wohngemeinschaft (WG
for short, meaning a flat-share). Useful website include:

15. General Information
It is really easy to overspend during your first days in Vienna!
Mariahilferstrasse is the most popular shopping street in Vienna but it’s
not so cheap!!
READ CAREFULLY:

16. Your first shopping spot
On Innere Mariahilferstrasse you can find a “1 Euro store”, right at
Zieglergasse U3 station. Most things there are only 1 Euro. They sell
cheap pens, papers etc. plus a lot of other useful things (cooking
equipment, cleaning supplies, hygiene products etc). We recommend
this to be your first shopping stop, but your only stop on
Mariahilferstrasse as other stores are very expensive.

17. Bed Sheets, Furniture, Towels etc
• Go to IKEA! Go to IKEA! Go to IKEA!
• You will pay a lot more anywhere else.

18. Food
• Hoffer is for sure the cheapest supermarket in Vienna. The closest one to
LBS is just a few stops away on the 37 tram towards Schottentor. Get off at
Währingerstrasse and it should be right on the corner.
• Other rather cheap supermarkets are Pennymarkt or Zielpunkt.
Billa and Spar are supermarkets close to the dormitory (2-5 minute walk) on
Döblinger Hauptstrasse but they are mid-range in price.
Tip: A good way to get discounts is by asking for a Billa Card. This card is FREE
and offers many discounts.

19. Food - Markets
• Each district in Vienna has an outdoor market. The two most notable
ones are:
• Brunnenmarkt, a good place to buy fresh fruits and vegetables and
meat. It’s a short walk from Josefstädterstrasse on the U6 line.
• Naschmarkt, the most touristy market. It’s not cheap but some very
interesting produce, foods, and cultural culinary products can be
found there. It’s right at Kettenbrückengasse on the U4 line.

20. Hygiene and Cosmetics
Go to BIPA or DM. Both are only a 2-5 minute walk from the dormitory.
Tip: get a FREE BIPA membership card. You will get many discounts by
having it.

21. Cleaning Supplies
Living in a shared room can get messy. Keep a clean environment for
your own health and well being.
DM or BIPA are good for cleaning supplies. Both are on Döblinger
Hauptstrasse, only 2-5 minute walk from the dorms.

22. University Supplies
On Innere Mariahilferstrasse you can find a “1 Euro store”, right at
Zieglergasse U3 station. They sell cheap pens, papers etc. plus a lot of
other useful things.
Libro has anything you may need such as notebooks, pens, papers etc.
The prices there are not cheap but the quality is good.

23. Doctors and Pharmacies
• Once you have an “E-card” (the insurance card) you can go to the
different clinics in town.
• You can find a list of doctors nearby the dormitory on the bulletin
board in front of the Mensa entrance.
• Just make an appointment and bring your E-card with you. Basic
treatments are covered by your insurance.
• Pharmacies are called Apotheke in German. Look for the green cross
sign. If you have an E-card, medicine will cost you up to 5 Euros.

24. Clothes
• Cheap clothes can be found in Primark.
• To get there, take the U6 to Florisdorf and then look for the FREE
shuttle bus to G3 center.

25. Second Hand
• If you need a fridge, couch, phone, bike etc, you can easily get second
hand for a decent price.

26. Learning German
If you are willing to take extra German courses throughout the year, we
recommend:
• JBBZ- A Jewish center that offers German courses for cheap. It is only
15-20 minutes walk from the campus. http://www.jbbz.at/
• Chabad Integration Center. For more information just ask the LBS
office.
• Deutsch Akademie- Intensive German courses.

27. Library Cards
• Students are able to open up FREE library cards at the University of
Vienna, Wirtschafts University (WU), and Vienna Public Libraries. The
Austrian National Library costs 10 EUR/year.

29. Car2Go
• Car2Go is a great car sharing program. This can be especially useful
for non-dorm residents considering that public transportation closes
down at 1am on weeknights (24h on weekends).
