Excellence (DCoE) for Psychological and Traumatic Brain Injury. DCoE is out in front on
recognizing psychological problems among Servicemembers and recently began reaching out
to military members and their families through social networking. People often have
unrealistic views of redeployment. Communication is key to understanding what the
Servicemember wants and needs. Include your Servicemember in the planning process so they

WEEKLY FINANCIAL TIPS
COUPONS – With the continuing economic situation, it’s more important than ever
to keep money for a rainy day. Food is major portion of most of our budgets. With our
current nation drought yearly food budgets are projected to increase by over six
hundred dollars next year. Here are some tips and tools to make grocery shopping
faster, easier and cheaper:
1. Review your budget. Know how much money you have available and accept
the challenge to spend less.
2. Plan meals. Consider a tool that helps you plan your meals such as, www.mealsmatter.org,
www.saymmm.com, or www.eatrealgood.com/meal-planner.html. Planning your meals will
reduce impulse shopping. These sites will even create shopping lists for you based on these
meals.
3. Create a grocery list. Starting with a list can save you money and time.
4. Click coupons before you leave home. Look through your Sunday paper for coupons or even
your favorite magazines offer opportunities for savings. Visit online websites for coupons
such as www.ppgazette.com, www.mygrocerydeals.com, and www.thecouponclippers.com.
If you are looking for coupons for organic and natural products, check out
www.mambosprouts.com. Don’t forget to visit the manufacturer’s websites for coupons,
including meat manufacturers like www.tyson.com.
5. Don’t forget your store loyalty cards. Most major stores now offer loyalty cards. Visit your
store’s website to see if you can directly download their coupons to your card. Eliminating
11. the need to cut them out from the weekly newspaper. These sites let you load directly to your
store loyalty cards: www.cellfire.com, www.pgesaver.com, www.shortcuts.com,
https://ecoupons.upromise.com and www.savingstar.com. You will need to register the first
time, but the simplicity of clicking and savings is worth the time.
6. Use the peelies, blinkies and tearpads. Peelies are the sticker-like coupons stuck on the
product at the store. Blinkies are the coupons from Smartsource machines (red boxes) usually
found in the cereal aisles. Tearpads are usually found on product shelves or displays.
7. Use your phone. With technology progressing, it only reasonable to presume it would include
food shopping. Here are a few applications that can help you save money:
a. CompareMe App – An application for comparing and converting prices, price
negotiations, bargaining, and verifying the cheapest prices.
b. Unit Price Compare App – Similar to CompareMe, but designed for the Android phones.
c. Cellfire App – Just search for coupons and add them directly to your loyalty-program
cards.
d. Verizon Spend Smart – Verizon phone users can register at www.vzspendsmart.com with
their loyalty-car information. You can choose coupons on your phone and transfer the
saving to your loyalty card.
8. Compare prices between store brands and national labels. Look at the cost per unit to
effectively compare; store brand items are usually about 27 percent less than national brands.
These are usually listed on the shelf prices, if not use a small calculator to figure it out.
9. Avoid last minute impulse purchases especially at the checkout for things like magazines
and candy bars; ask yourself “Do I really need this?” Area by the checkout counter is prime
marketing space look for a register that doesn’t have these items if you are normally tempted
to purchase things at this point.

DEPLOYMENT TIPS
Be a Resilient Family Why is it that some families seem to endure the worst things that life dishes
out, while others seem to unravel at the first sign of trouble? In a word, the answer is resilience.
Resilience refers to internal strength and durability. In families it is evidenced by a sense of control
over the outcomes of life and how the family as a whole responds to hard times. Does your family
weather life's storms well? Consider the three major components of family resilience.
Resilient families are cohesive. Families with high cohesiveness count on each other to provide
support, encouragement and even rebuke when appropriate. There is an assumed, unspoken level
16. of trust and commitment to one another that may seem to defy logic. In times of adversity, others
marvel at the apparent lack of distress observed in their friends or co-workers from cohesive
families. This lack of distress should never be mistaken for a lack of concern. During tough times
cohesive families communicate a consistent message: "I am here for you."
Resilient families see problems as challenges that can be overcome. While it's true that there
usually are enough challenges in daily living, resilient families seldom shy away from a challenge. In
fact, what other families describe as a problem, resilient families, describe as a challenge. They
tend to believe that they can overcome most obstacles in life. It is not that they feel overly
confident in their talent or that they have special abilities. Resilient families possess a sense of
purpose, perseverance and an uncanny understanding that by hanging together they can make their
way.
Resilient families hold on to hope in difficult times. Resilient families are known for their sense of
hope, and for even "out hoping" others. One explanation is that they continually find things they
can control when other things are tilting out of control. While some families seem to be naturally
optimistic, optimism can also be learned.
What about your family? Perhaps you see that your family is indeed resilient. If not, consider how
you might put these components into practice. You can also observe families who cope well with
crises and ask them how they fare so well
