Excellence (DCoE) for Psychological and Traumatic Brain Injury. DCoE is out in front on
recognizing psychological problems among Servicemembers and recently began reaching out
to military members and their families through social networking. People often have
unrealistic views of redeployment. Communication is key to understanding what the
Servicemember wants and needs. Include your Servicemember in the planning process so they

after the service member's separation from the military. Records with a discharge date 62 years
ago or prior are archived and open to the public. For example, for 2012 records are available
from 1950 and earlier. Records with a discharge date after 1950 are non-archival and are

access restrictions and need to be accessed through the eVetRecs online system order form.
The 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center damaged or destroyed 16-18 million
Army and Air Force records for military personnel discharged between 1912-1964. Alternate
record sources can often be used to reconstruct these records. (Source: National Archives

WEEKLY FINANCIAL TIPS
CAR INSURANCE – Car insurance protects against financial loss in the event
of a car accident, theft, or other unforeseen occurrence. However, talking to
10. your insurance agent can be confusing. Generally, car insurance documents contain a variety of
legal terms that you may not understand and that tend to make you it intimidating. Understanding
how your policy is designed to protect you will help you make informed decisions. Here are
some of the basic terms to help you get a better understanding of your policy:
1. Deductible – This is the amount you are required to pay before your car insurance will
take effect to pay for the repair or replacement of your vehicle.
2. Liability Insurance Coverage – This is coverage for damages you cause to others.
a. Bodily Injury Liability Coverage – This is mandatory coverage that pays for
medical damages and funeral expenses for any people injured or killed in an
accident for which you were responsible (or which the operator of your vehicle
caused – for instance if you loaned your vehicle to someone). It also pays your
legal expenses if an injured party sues you in relation to the accidents. The
exception to this coverage is that it doesn’t cover you or other drivers listed on
your policy.
b. Property Damage Liability – This is coverage for damage you caused to the
property of others. Usually this means damage to another vehicle, but it also
covers other property such as a lawn, fence or home if you damage it with your
car. This does not cover your own car.
3. Physical Damage Coverage – This coverage protects your property in the event of an
accident.
a. Collision coverage – This type of coverage is for damage to your vehicle when it
hits another vehicle or object. This coverage is designed to get your car repaired
or replaced.
b. Comprehensive coverage – Comprehensive covers your vehicle in the event of
damage or loss from something other than a collision. This includes theft,
vandalism, nature, and animals.
4. Uninsured Motorist Coverage
a. Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage – If your vehicle is struck by a driver
with no insurance, this coverage pays for damages to you or other people in your
vehicle.
b. Uninsured motorist property damage – This coverage pays in the event your
property is damaged by an uninsured or underinsured driver’s action.
c. Waiver of Collision deductible – This coverage is available in certain states and
only if you have Uninsured motorist coverage. This coverage will pay your
collision deductible if the damage to your vehicle is caused by an uninsured
motorist.
5. Personal Injury Protection Coverage – This type of coverage provides medical and
funeral expenses for the driver or others in the vehicle that is insured in the event of a
collision. This includes pedestrians struck by the insured vehicle.
11. 6. Gap Insurance – This is separate from your auto insurance. Gap insurance covers the
gap between what you owe on your auto and its current market value. Ask your insurance
agent or company about gap coverage when you shop for a new car. They don’t have to
offer it to you, but they must sell it if you ask.

DEPLOYMENT TIPS
Coping When a Family Member Deploys: The following are suggestions to help you manage
the stress when a family member is deployed:
15. Take time to listen to each other. Know that deployment will be a painful and
frightening time, particularly for children. The more you can communicate with one
another, the less long-term strain there will be on the family.
Minimize exposure to anxiety-arousing media related to the war. When children worry
about war, let them know that the war is far away. Acknowledge children's fears, and let
them know that parents, teachers and police are here to protect them.
Remember the deployed member is still a part of the family. Keep photographs of your
loved one in prominent locations. Get children's help in keeping a family journal of each
day's events for the deployed member to look at when he or she returns.
Understand feelings. Emotions such as fear, anger and feeling "numb" are normal and
common reactions to stress.
Spend time with people. Coping with stressful events is easier when in the company of
caring friends. Ask for support from your family, friends, church or other community
group.
Join or develop support groups. Peer-support groups, led by spouses of deployed
service members, can be a tremendous aid to family functioning.
Keep up routines. Try to stick to everyday routines. Familiar habits can be very
comforting.
Take time out for fun. Take a walk, spend time with your pets or play a game you
enjoy.
Help others. It is beneficial for everyone to find ways you and your family can
productively channel energy. Helping other families and organizing neighborhood support
groups or outings can help everyone involved.
