Malcolm MacDonald was the British Governor-General of Malaya who identified the main problem in Malayan politics as suspicion between the Malays, the indigenous people, and the Chinese, who played a major role in economic development. Before World War II, British administration in Malaya strictly enforced colonial laws, requiring political parties, trade unions, and newspapers to register and obtain permits. After the war, British rule was more relaxed without these strict rules and regulations, giving Malaya a sense of freedom. Ibrahim Yaakob was a writer and teacher who wrote a book describing the suffering of people under colonial rule, raising political consciousness and a spirit of nationalism among Malayans that the land belonged to them.
