In 1797, the Company of Surgeons purchased the building
in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. A new building was designed by Sir
Charles Barry in 1813, instigating a series of regeneration
projects to provide space for lecture theatres, meeting
rooms and the Hunterian Collection. The grand entrance
hall, inner hall, main staircase and the library, all part of Sir
Charles’s design, opened in 1837. The realigned portico of
the original building was kept in place and is still here today
and, of course, we are still in Lincoln’s Inn Fields.
Additions were made as required over the next hundred
years, and the College was expanded to accommodate
laboratories and museum galleries.
The College suffered extensive bomb damage during World
War Two. The rooms behind and east of the entrance
hall were destroyed, including the museum. This area was
rebuilt between 1952 to 1957, including reconstruction and
restoration of the Edward Lumley Hall (where you could
have your wedding ceremony), the Council and Committee
Rooms and the Nuffield College of Surgical Sciences.
Today the building hosts a range of events, training
programmes and lectures but has retained its history,
beauty and grandeur – making it the perfect place to spend
your special day.

Useful information and
frequently asked questions
Can I hold the ceremony or
service at the College?
Yes. Once you have confirmed your booking with us simply
call the Westminster Register Office (020 7641 7500) for
advice and book your date. Formal legal notice of intention
to marry must be given by you and the person you are
marrying once you have confirmed the date. Marriage
ceremonies must take place between 8am and 6pm;
therefore the latest possible time for a wedding is 5pm.
Civil ceremonies require a Superintendent Registrar or
Deputy Superintendent Registrar.
How do we secure the date?
We are happy to hold your chosen date for one month
without obligation, or until another party wishes to secure
the same date. To secure the date we require a £1,000
deposit. The balances will be due 30 days in advance of
your event.

after the wedding for you and your guests. There are en-
suite single, double and twin rooms. Rates are available
on request.
How big is your car park?
We can only accommodate ten cars in total, which have
to be pre-booked with full car details. Spaces are available
around Lincoln’s Inn Fields (payment by meter only);
alternatively there is a NCP car park in Drury Lane and

Can we bring our own pre-reception and
reception drinks?
We have a caterer who can provide all drinks and food. If
