This WebQuest document provides instructions for an assignment where students research and write a newspaper article about the experiences of soldiers or women during World War I on the Western Front in Europe. Many men and women left their homes in America to serve their country and defend the allies in Europe. You are a reporter from the United States assigned to write about the lives of soldiers and women involved in WWI in the Western Front in Europe.

Each one of you will be a reporter, who will write a one paged article which describes these people’s lives as they served American during WWI: Soldier : You are to write an article about the soldiers’ experiences in the trenches. What was their environment like? What were the hardest parts of their lives? Woman at the Front : Write an article explaining how women were involved in the war on the front and in what different ways they served. Each article should include an introduction and hook , at least seven main ideas , and a conclusion . Remember, this should be written as a newspaper article, so make sure it would capture the audience’s attention. Use creativity!

This project is intended to help students think about what WWI meant for the people who were really involved. It is designed to help them gain an appreciation for what these people had to do to contribute to the War, as well as allow them a creative approach to representing their knowledge. Modifications can be made for higher grade levels as far as length. For a higher level class, the information can be presented in a whole project to which they would need to gather other information aside from the WebQuest. They could also write their article longer and turn it into an essay. Emergence of the United States as a World Power, 1890-1920. This is also a great exercise in thinking critically for the students. Instead of just spitting back facts and information, they must internalize the information and represent what they learned in a creative way. Additionally, this project can be a great way to help students get interested in history by connecting to the feelings, experiences, and environments of specific people in the past, instead of a whole war or battle. [ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page This lesson can be given to all classes of 8 th grade American history, following an introduction to WWI in a prior lesson or assignment. The teacher should spent approximately 10 minutes explaining what the assignment involves, reviewing any background information about the war, and helping students become familiar with the WebQuest design if they haven't used it. Following this introduction, the students should break into pairs and decide if they want to write about the soldier or the woman. Depending on the length of classes, the students will most likely take one period to do the research and take notes, and a half of another class to compose their article. This can be done by teachers with all levels of experience. The most important thing for the teacher to do is to provide adequate background knowledge of the WWI so that they can relate the people’s experiences to a larger spectrum of knowledge of WWI. Variations If you only have one computer to present the information in front of the whole class, the students can view the resources provided for both the soldier and the woman, taking notes for each, and finally write an article for both, instead of having them divide into groups.
