Today’s networks are a collection of proprietary, purpose-built switches and routers that are expensive and at various stages of depreciation cycle. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) helps Cloud and Service Providers address lack of programmability and vendor lock-in by introducing intuitive 3-tier architecture. With Spirent, you can benchmark SDN controllers, switches, and routers for programmability, scale and traffic steering capabilities. @malathimalla

Aricent’s presentation on “Micro VNFs and Micro service environment” on next generation Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) is heating up. In debate on micro services, carriers has requested communities to step up research on micro service deployments.
Aricent believes that existing VNFs, which comes directly from the physical appliances software are not rightly designed and are less suited for cloud operations. These first generation VNFs are replication of physical appliances, monolithic architecture and need more computational power. These are heavy with physical appliance platform features i.e. HA, ISSU, Nonstop Routing/Switching and they have lots of redundant code which may not be necessary on cloud. As cloud platform provides these feature through its inherent platform capabilities.

Traditional carriers' transport networks consist of vertically-integrated devices with vendor-proprietary interfaces, that causes "vendor lock in" environment and interferes with adopting software based control and configuration for carriers' transport networks. NTT Communications are trying to adopt disaggregation approach for them to transform our operations by integrating commoditized multi-vendor components and SDN technology.
In this presentation, we will talk about our expectations for disaggregated transport networks and its controller architecture with multiple SDN controllers including open source software. Furthermore, we will show our internal evaluation result of disaggregated transport network feasibility and discuss future development plans.

Alcatel-Lucent Cloud: Network Functions Virtualization - The New Virtual Real...Alcatel-Lucent Cloud
Companies are facing cloud challenges; capacity expansion, commoditization, network and data center merging, network becoming a programmable platform, transformation at web speed. The answer is parallel scaling and the creation of the NFV Industry Group. NFV will greatly enhance the ability of "network applications" to elastically scale to meet changing demand patterns. Alcatel-Lucent is leading the way in this new reality.
With the advent of SDN driven network programmability and abstraction, IT operations management is poised for a transformation to higher levels of agility and automation.
The concept of service mesh is one of the new technologies that have grown up around the container and micro-service model over the last couple of years, and Istio is the latest entry into this space. As Istio was recently included as an incubated project in the CNCF, many companies are now looking to it to provide a set of key functions to accelerate their micro-service application management model. Istio enables bi-directional authentication and security of service communication via TLS based authentication and encryption, and at the same time is able to capture application level communication statistics, improving the application development team's visibility into the otherwise difficult to track communication patterns. In this way, Istio acts like an application level network, riding across the underlying capabilities of Kubernetes CNI based networks and network policy. We will implement Istio on a GKE kubernetes cluster, and instrument a simple application to get better insight into how Istio provides its capabilities.

Ildikó Váncsa, Chris Price, and Carsten Rossenhövel's presentation at the 2017 Open Networking Summit.
Communications service providers (CSPs) have a wide range of options when building virtualized services from the ground up including multiple choices for each functional block in the ETSI NFV reference architecture. CSPs prefer heterogeneous systems with building blocks from different vendors including open source software; for such deployments interoperability becomes a crucial requirement.
OpenStack, as the NFVI and VIM, serves as a widely used cloud platform for telecom and NFV use cases. As a common base, OpenStack offers the means for vendors and other open source projects to ease the interoperability challenge by providing a set of open API’s while focusing on upgradeability and backward compatibility.
However, when it comes to productization, interoperability testing often falls short and is sometimes left to the carrier as shown by the testing programs actively run by no fewer than 10 organizations today.
Join Carsten Rossenhövel from the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC) and the rapporteur (editor) of ETSI’s NFV interoperability standards, Ildikó Váncsa from the OpenStack Foundation, and Chris Price, Ericsson and OpenStack board director to learn more about

Intel Network Builders Summit: Key Lessons from an advanced multi-vendor NFV ...Kiran Sirupa
A leading Tier-1 Operator in APAC was evaluating new technologies to deliver enhanced managed network services for its Enterprise customers. With the growth in the demand for these services driven by the region’s growing consumption of web-based content and applications, the full-fledged telecommunications company embarked on an initiative to enhance the capacity and capabilities of its managed network services, with the aim of positioning itself as the best-in-class provider of next-generation cloud data center services.
As part of this transformation, the Operator identified NFV-based intelligent service orchestration, leveraging SDN and NFV technologies to pioneer the development of a portfolio of managed network services and invited vendors to participate in a Proof of Concept (PoC) to validate solutions that will be able to deliver these capabilities.
In response to the initiative, Anuta Networks in collaboration with the Tier-1 Operator, HPE and Logicalis, a leading IT solutions and managed services provider, conducted a PoC that saw the company validating the first end-to-end Managed Network Service Delivery using the IETF YANG Modeling Framework.
The PoC saw the deployment of Anuta Networks' NFV Orchestrator and VNF Lifecycle Manager - Anuta NCX - which provides carrier-grade NFV orchestration for instantiating, managing, and chaining Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) in accordance to IETF’s Management and Orchestration (MANO) guidelines. HPE provided the NFVI including Helion OpenStack, HP Compute, HPE Virtual Router (VRS) and HPE DCN SDN (OEM version of ALU Nuage VSP) controller.
First of its kind, the highly successful PoC demonstrated capabilities of Anuta Networks via its NCX solution to deliver carrier-grade NFV orchestration while dynamically and intelligently provisioning computing, storage and networking resources to enable the Tier 1 Operator to efficiently deliver next-generation cloud services to clients across the region.

Generating a custom Ruby SDK for your web service or Rails API using Smithyg2nightmarescribd
Have you ever wanted a Ruby client API to communicate with your web service? Smithy is a protocol-agnostic language for defining services and SDKs. Smithy Ruby is an implementation of Smithy that generates a Ruby SDK using a Smithy model. In this talk, we will explore Smithy and Smithy Ruby to learn how to generate custom feature-rich SDKs that can communicate with any web service, such as a Rails JSON API.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
